I just finished reading in German Schlink's Die Heimkehr (also available in English). As Schlink said in the interview all novels are autobiographical. The interview gives me an understanding of Schlink and adds meaning to that book. An excellent interview, not forced, giving Schlink time to think. This is the first Charlie Rose interview I've seen and I'm impressed.

A little self reflection might be in order.
Charlie Rose seems to be totally unaware why somebody might stand by and not help somebody who is trapped in a burning barn and yet he stood idly by while his government lit a similar barn in Iraq.

Thoughtful, lucid. As a European I was moved, as it reminded me of many conversations with friends in Europe, so often on this very topic. I too would have liked to listen to him for a full hour.

This was probably the best show of the year, surprisingly so.

Marvelous. Perhaps the best and pithiest introduction to the moral dilemmas of the post-war German generations I've heard. The metaphor implied of moral illiteracy, intended or not, is very powerful. The explicit comment about the vital importance of institutions as necessary to the protection and nurturing of civil society is even more so.

One of the best conversations ever. Would have loved to have him for the whole hour.
