Penn and Brolin are a pleasure to listen to...Both highly intelligent, well spoken, reflective and fascinating men, apart from their acting chops. I do think Penn, perhaps because of his acting talents, may be highly susceptible to images presented by foreign demagogues and their media spinners. Despite this, he is one hell of an actor.

I bet Sarah Palin never snorted 8 balls of coke with hookers either. Sean Penn is a clown. What does he know of Sarah Palin's thoughts? I trust her more politically than I do him. And Barney Frank....oh lordy...what an incompetent bufoon - everytime I look at that fat creep I always think of a toothless gay man - and probably toothless on purpose. God knows he has ripped the people of this country enough to be able to buy some teeth. ew. The visual is horrifying.

Sean Penn is a good actor but he is certainly no role model by any stretch of the means so his criticism of others whom he does not know and only sees in news clips makes him look ridiculous. If he is so curious about everything why doesn't he go and see sarah palin like he does the dictators of the world. He obviously finds her more scary than them. I'm so sick of all of these psuedo-intellectuals - complete buffonery, poor thing, he is so completely deceived I feel bad for him. There is none quite so bigoted and absolutely empty headed as a liberal bigot. He simply doesn't understand the gay marriage issue is not about gays or about straights it is ultimately and fundamentally about children. Just take a look Finland if you want to know what happened to their country and what happened to the children and family dynamic after gay marriage was made legal. They wished they would have never done it - and those are quotes from the people who run the country. No one is more important than the children but instead everyone has their mind on themselves. of course.

A self confident fool has no delight in understanding but only in revealing his personal opinions and himself.

      -- Proverbs 18:2

You're so interested in the truth? Well there some truth for you Sean Penn. good luck and I'll say a prayer for you.

I loved this a film as well this interview.

For anyone interested in the evolution of EQUALITY FOR ALL I'd recommend the amazing new film by Sir Tijn Po, called COMING SOON.

You can see it for free at their website: http://www.comingson.cz as well as on Google Video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-152460894465175765&hl=en

The other part of Cuba comes to mind as well. Shut down Guantanamo on the 21st also.

    7. tartufe  12/05/2008 01:04 PM Report

The San Francisco incident was singularly outstanding enough to warrant artistic re-creations to question, evaluate and assimilate its implications for our culture. The sometimes phobic reactions (like the shooter himself) doubtless manifests fears within themselves (that 3rd grade psychology is useless if that's already an obvious given).

Orientations aside, I appreciate Penn's independent thought process. Cuba particularly is a case in point. So they're communists. So what? Are we so small that that makes one tinkers damn. We should open up trade with them January 21st.

      Vote for Sean Penn!

      He's smarter than Sarah Palin!

      Vote for Sean Penn!

      He's smarter than Sarah Palin!...

      Now I need a place to throw-up.

gcraig - a useless observation and wish I would stop, nonetheless in CR's defense I can't help but think you'd gone-off the opposite direction if Chuck would have declared (your style) that every time he sees Barney he's reminded that he's gay. Bettin you'd a flipped. You're admitted? sensitivity would deem CR a loser (on this point) either way. Apologies all around if I'm wrong. This adds nothing to useful discourse. A throw-away for sure. But there you have it.

In this show Mr. Rose made the remark, to paraphrase, "we see Barney Frank, Chairman of House Finance Committee, all the time and we don't even think about his sexual orientation." Well, Mr. Rose, as a gay man I think about it every time I see him on television or in person in Provincetown, MA where he tends to wander by once or twice a year. As a straight man no doubt you don't think about, as a gay man Congressman Frank represents a huge icon for gays and lesbians and we are proudly reminded of that everytime we see him. I'm not normally very sensitive to this type of thing but had to comment as your remark betrayed a level of cluelessness about the gay and lesbian movement that I found disturbing. Thanks however for the interviews with Penn, Brolin, Van Sant and covering this amazing film.

Exactly the kind of thing we don't need out of Hollywood, and which they insist on giving us. IMHO the shareholders should ask for their money back. But at least Charlie doesn't like it either, or he wouldn't have put it on Friday night in the middle of a holiday weekend.

    12. tartufe  12/01/2008 11:02 PM Report

Penn's no pretender to the throne. Politicians, financial wise-guys et al could take some lessons. We denigrate ourselves re Cuba. Maybe Penn can set Obama n Hillary a values example.

I'm dying to see this movie. It's coming in march in France. The dream team Gus van sant and Sean penn. And I Love Emile Hirsch, to me, the way he plays is original. The movie looks georgous. This movie is about the fact that they are different way to be and to live, it's fine, as long as you don't hurt anybody like Dan white. Also, the History is made of histories: black history, gay history, women history. Sean is so right, people should try to see things from different perspective sometimes. (English is not my first language, lol)
