      re::

      toni M "interview" ::

      Puer meets Great Mother ::

      i would like to suggest that in Charlie's proposed exploration of psychology and psychotherapy and psychoanalysis the producers include the fields of transpersonal (ken wilber, integral everything) and archetypal psychology (post Jungian and Post post Jungian) and the legacy of Joseph Campbell ::

      and evening with Poet Robert Bly ? ::

      a roundtable convo with

      Robert Bly and Psychologist James Hillman and Sam Keen (keeper of Joe Campbell heritage) and others involved in the "Mytho Poetic" tradition of male psychology as it functions in our culture and inevitably in our political institutions :: (Puer/Senex elections) ::

      perhaps Bill Moyers would join in since he has some experience interviewing these men and knows the movement :: they can explain why Charlie flounders with very powerful intelligent women :: sigh :: oh, and Thomas Moore would be another good person to include in the round table ::

      definitely a conversation to highlight ...

      it's happening and it's important ...

      Charlie :: get some rest !

      :)

      Charlie....President-elect Obama got there because we were ready for change....all sorts of positive change. Please do not insinuate a cult of personality on him. Let us as Americans step-up to the challenges of these difficult times using his leadership as our guide.

      I was rather disappointed at president-elect Obama's first news conference. Although president elect Obama is good at making prepared speeches, he still not good at crispy, impromptu exchanges that’s a must for a President of the United States to deal with many critical situations. We all know president elect Obama made great acceptance speech, which he abruptly ended, for some reason? breaking away from the excellent rhythm he kept. I think his first news conference was a near disaster. And his self-deprecating comment about “Mutt like me” was in very poor taste and completely inappropriate for the dignity of the office he now holds. I was shocked at that statement. And besides he made a snide remark about Nancy Reagan’s “Séances” for which he had to call her and apologize! You must wait until the glitz and glamour that was manufactured by the media about Barack Obama fade, then you will see him as who he really is. The first news conference gave me a glimpse of impending existential letdown! I still think that Sen. Hillary Clinton would have done a much better job as the President of the United States? from the get go! Besides, every important Obama administration post is being filled by a former Clinton appointee! Remember “Change?”

      chanp - if you want to creat some kind of faux contraversy you are going to have to work a little harder. Your post is dumb.

      How ironic to see that Toni Morrison sounding so flat and out of steam! Now that an African American has become a 44th president of the United States, all those emotional and spiritual claims that Toni Morrison build a carrier out of making seems to fade if not invalidate. She almost had to say nothing has changed, even Obama as president, in order to justify herself. It was as if she did not want nothing changed as an African American, because she has ironacally benefited immensely from the from the tragic legacy of long years of suffering of African Americans. Ms. Morrison’s whole body of writing which centers around the suffering of African Americans now seem to belong to America’s past and not the future. And that’s a good thing; because some us should be in the business of putting ourselves out of business!

      I'm a PhD student, I'm a huge fan of Toni Morrison and one should praise any interview that Mrs. Morrison gives to the press as she's such an inspiring, talented writer. But I have to say that I'm really disappointed by the quality of Charlie's interview. He asked very superficial questions, or if he asked an interesting one, Mrs. Morrison had hardly any time to answer! Mr. Rose had many opportunities to make connections between the latest book "A mercy" and the older books that she wrote. But never did I heard anything inspiring in this so-called conversation. I sometimes felt it was more of a monologue of Mr. rose speaking to himself. When you have Mrs. Morrison sitting with you for an interview, what you did is then unforgivable. Shame on you Mr. Rose!

      Toni Morrison is wonderful but Charlie you and your interruptions! Good God man shut your mouth and let her talk. Charlie kept on pontificating over and over and supplying the answers to his own questions.

      Not to mention his own elitist mentions of himself being at the "Literary Lions" and such even though his own knowledge of literature hardly goes beyond mentioning titles of books and writers so he can impress at Upper East Side dinner parties.

      Gimme a break.

      It is interesting that the Great American Experiment or Invention, the creation of a government by the people and for the people, was founded on the principles of individualism conjoined with community responsibility and duty to the nation. The Founders were, fundamentally, individuals with a high sense of duty to the res publica, this republic. To compare American individualism with loneliness is disingenuous and contrary to the facts. The Wilsonian ideal of internationalism, which unfortunately has climaxed with this election--Bush's doctrine is definitely not absolved--may very well check-mate The Great American Invention. After all, the Founders (many of whom were not even born on this soil) were intent on making their revolutionary ideas a beacon of hope for the nascent nation and the rest of the world suffering from institutionalized despotism: monarchical, theological, oligarchic. We have mixed up so many original sins and evils, revisiting physical and psychological places that no longer exist, that the original idea of the United States of America has been so painted over that it has become truly unrecognizable. Fiction is fiction. We should strive for the original historical continuum, not the static, to understand who and what we truly are.

      Toni Morrison is a lovely and extraordinarily gifted writer; it would have been nice if we could have heard her thoughts directly from herself! Shame on Mr. Rose for constantly interrupting, telling her what she thought, talking about what he thought (e.g. about her body of work, about Barack Obama). I began to wonder who was the interviewer and who was the interviewee. Three cheers for Ms. Morrison who very graciously put up with Mr. Rose constantly interrupting her and talking over her. I appreciate that he was enthusiastic, but that's no excuse for a fine interviewer. Mr. Rose, please watch your performance and make amends by inviting Ms. Morrison back and letting her get her own thoughts out! PLEASE!

    10. Thanks, Ms Morrison  11/11/2008 01:09 PM Report

      a new novel by Ms Morrison is truly a gift to those of us who appreciate great writing. I intend to give it to several people on my list this Holiday. It should make an interesting companion piece to Simon Schama's "Rough Crossings".

      Loved your interview with Toni Morrison (love Toni).

      I was set back by your question that asked if racism was over. How terribly naive you are. This is what I have heard (this is from white America):

      1. my brother-in-law from PA uses the N word. My sister who has spent her life in the Mid-Atlantic backs him up. I am appalled.

      2. my client from SC (who is well educated and well travelled) says we don't use that word, its not polite. End of conversation, she won't go any further. Polite? I can think of a lot of adjectives, that isn't one of them.

      3. my associate, working on a project in Arkansas, ambles into the local diner and asked the guy behind the counter how he feels about the election (he has already established a level of comfort with the jackass). answer: The secret service needs to put him in an open car and send him to Dallas. They'll know how to take car of him. (the local opinion is that someone is already out there "aiming for him.")

      If anyone thinks racism is behind us, they are sadly mistaken. What Toni says about fear is much more approriate. Racism will diminish when we all fade toward one color, but she said something about that as well.

      Maybe when the aliens land and we have bigger, really different fish to fry that will put a damper on it.

    12. Ricardo C. Amaral  11/11/2008 02:27 AM Report

      There are only two possible outcomes for a Barack Obama administration in the next 4 years:

      1) He does an outstanding job and becomes the new FDR of the 21st Century. or 2) Because there is so much expectations regarding Barack Obama administration if he does not meet these very high expectations then his presidency will be considered a failure.

      We all hope he becomes the new FDR.

    13. Ricardo C. Amaral  11/11/2008 02:20 AM Report

      The collapsing US economy was the reason why we have president elected Obama.

      The collapsing US economy is what people had in mind when they went to vote in November 2008.

    14. RE Mant  11/11/2008 12:49 AM Report

      Don't want to be a party-pooper, but I am not sure that Obama actually had much of anything to do with his election. Do ladies wear dresses to rock concerts?
