Everyone was good and informative, except Bartiromo. She thinks Sarah Palin is an energy expert? Is she serious?

what should have been the best campaign of our lives turned out into a crap shoot of stupid personalities

what a waste of the internet eras ability to create political will that leads to change

the opportunity was so much greater now it will just be a dragout until 2012

      when real decisions are made

    3. Gina  10/21/2008 08:23 AM Report

haha Preston, Your over-active imagination are getting the best of you. Stick to the politics at hand! You too Bob Barker! Wait...Bob Barker?????? haha..

Now Bob! This is not a forum for RUMORS!... You dirty old fart.

Yes indeed, Preston. She's as juicy as a ripe peach. And... shhh... she crys.--------- shhh.

      Indeed Preston... Tastes like WINE.

Doris Kearns Goodwin insists that Obama must be the happy negro, and show her more happiness. Doris, this isn't your favorite black baseball or basketball player. At one point in the video, Katty Kay said that early on in the primaries, Hillary Clinton's people said "Why couldn't he just wait?". The sense of entitlement is truly sickening. But their arrogance among other things was their downfall.

    9. Gina  10/19/2008 05:58 PM Report

      TABS - haha (wink)...

    10. TABS  10/19/2008 04:25 PM Report

    13. Gina  10/19/2008 01:33 PM Report

Guess which Republican is voting for Barack Obama? ******************** The answer is: Colin Powell. That should tell you something right there...

      Dear TABS,

      Thanks for your comments.

      ------------------

but What we need is a president with sound judgement, that can remedy this country from the present economic mess and the economic consequences from unecessary war.

      ------------------

Obama has excellent levels of education, intellect, mental serenity and inter-personal skills to get the job done.

      ------------------

BTW, Obama's tax plans seeks to only restore

the top-bracket taxation rate back to levels of Clinton days.

      Didn't Clinton leave a $300B budget surplus ?

Clearly the country was much better off during Clinton days.

and we need is someone like Obama who can reverse the damages done by Bush regime.

      ------------------

and not electing Obama would be as unfortunate as an unsuccessful presidential run by

a decent individual such as Charlie Rose

or Eric Schmidt (of Google) in a hypthetical scenario.

      Regards

      //Ram

PS: You're the ones who are exaggerating, propagandizing, twisting the truth, and downright lying on the world wide web here. Hey you're not in your living rooms telling old rusty fabled stories of years gone by that no one can check. All of these things are events, current and historical. Get an education. You need one because you don't know what the heck you're talking about....(smile, haha)

    16. Gina  10/18/2008 04:30 PM Report

Preston! - Exaggerating? I will excuse you for your lack of knowledge and just say. Are you that daft?? Or is it that you just don't know anything? Not only is there NO exaggeration here BUT there's morrrrrre!! Want more? You'd better get a clue fella cause that is the COLD HARD TRUTH!

    17. Preston  10/18/2008 02:50 PM Report

Wheww!... Man!, Woman!, Cat!, Dog!,... Talk about EXAGGERATING!!!

    18. Gina  10/18/2008 02:02 PM Report

Alright TABS, I’m taking you to task now. Listen, you would rather vote for a man who ‘quote‘ stated that he voted with the President over 90% of the time since Bush has been in office. The very administration that has caused scandal after scandal after scandal. So many scandals this administration has had that I think this might be the most scandalous administration we’ve had in the history of the United States. This administration deserves its own Prime-Time Soap. The very administration under the Bush office watch which has enabled the monstrosity 700 BILLION dollar CORPORATE debt you and I now incur over the crooked, greedy dealings of the banking industry on TOP of an enormous military debt of billions in a country we are fighting a war to win in which originally we were only supposed to be bringing DEMOCRACY to Iraq AND Afghanistan. Then we have the billions on top billions of dollars simultaneously funding not one but 2 wars that will essentially never be over because we are fighting renegade religious mercenary sects who are completely out of control. The Iraqi war never had to happen. We already owe TRILLIONS of dollars upping itself toward the QUADRILLION dollar mark and on top of that…we’re borrowing from China…a country that is NOT our ally. How much do we owe China now?

We do not even own 'Yellowstone National Park' or didn't you know that? In case you didn't, it is the 'United Nations' that owns our park because the debt is so high that we cannot even pay it off.------Pretty sad...What do you call that, ‘socialism’? Well hey I can tell you this…a little ‘food for thought’..maybeeee we should call the other countries we owe debt ‘socialists’ too. Since apparently they’re the ones helping to bail our kiesters out with loans on top of loans. McCain is rickety, he’s out of touch and he’s got an out of touch inexperienced vice presidential candidate to boot that he tried to throw into the mix giving Sarah Palin her 15 minutes of fame. What that was all about, who knows. He will be an ineffective president if he is elected.

********************************************** Another comment of yours. You said, (and I quote)…‘The Middle class is going to bear the brunt of the burden of government’… Well neither Obama or John McCain have proven that. Aren’t you a little backwards in your thinking? Guilty comes ’after’ the charges proven. I’ll say it again, John McCain himself said it, he voted with the President over 90% of the time. And you said…‘whose back is it going to come from'. What an uninsightful question that is. Case you haven’t noticed, it is ON our backs already right now as we speak. It will continue to be on our backs if McCain is elected because he is running on the same party ticket that got us into this trouble in the first place. For the maverick? John McCain has always been a politician in the shadows. There’s no maverick here. So the points you make not only make no sense? But they mute themselves out…...

    19. TABS  10/18/2008 05:31 AM Report

DEAR RAMG: The problem with Mr Obama is that he is a fking socialist from the word go. A veritable revolutionary whose hero is undoubtedly CHE Guevara. Someone should ask Obama if he had that famous poster of "CHE" on his wall as a kid?

      ..................................................................................................... ............................................................

Does America need a "Socialist" as a President. This is going to be a first if elected. Teddy Kennedy has tried 3 times before and failed to get one of his Liberals elected. The fourth time maybe the charm. It will all be done in the name of the people aka the "taxpayer." America with a socialist president and a Liberal Congress will make California look like a veritable bastion of conservative capitalism.

      ..................................................................................................... ...............................................................

Unfortunately for us, Obama is NOT WHAT AMERICA NEEDS. What America needs is a leader who can lead from the CENTER, with a BALANCED viewpoint recognizing the needs of both the right and left. The disaffected and business. It takes both for America to prosper. Obama does NOT offer a balanced viewpoint. America is rich according to him, we can afford anything and everything. However whose back is it going to come from. The Middle class is going to bear the brunt of the burden of government, for the rich will go offshore to protect their money as they did in Britain in the 1960's. So tell us how great it all will be in a Obamaian socialist paradise.

America is going to be forever changed. Gone will be that spark of entrepenurialism that made America great. Only to be replaced by the deadening steps of working for the collective good aka socialism.

    20. RamG  10/18/2008 04:29 AM Report

Thanks for doing these debate analyses, Charlie.

Like your panelists often note, Obama's calm and

cool disposition, rare for a politican, is his strength.

The man does show passion too,

as can be seen in the Q & A with Eric Schmidt

at Google, when he articulated his vision last November.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nnj7r1wCD4&NR=1

If he gets elected Obama might easily make one of the smartest presidents the U.S. has ever had.

But I worry, most Americans might be fundamentally too religious to elect a smart person like Obama.

    21. irishsheesh  10/17/2008 10:04 PM Report

Glad to see Maria on again - she clearly has value to add to the discussion. I recently commented that I am not a big fan of hers because I dont watch her kind of show - this was poorly written - I meant only that I wasn't defending her as a fan as I know little of her work other than the few times I have seen her on this show.

    22. MotherLodeBeth  10/17/2008 03:49 PM Report

Oh and here is another question for those like Charlie Rose and those on this show. How many 'average' people do you actually hang out with? Sometimes I think the media sees those of use who are 'average' as some type of oddity that needs picking apart. I use the library computer since I cannot afford to fix the one I have or buy a new one. Yet Charlie and his group probably dont know what that is like or the idea of having to choose between buying milk or bread.

    23. MotherLodeBeth  10/17/2008 03:45 PM Report

Having watched PBS where they did a piece on both Obama and McCain I found it interesting that those who worked for him said when he ran for the Senate the idea was to have him NOT get involved with anything that would leave a paper trail that anyone could use against him. I found that sad, since being a REAL leader means stepping up and fighting for something even if others will disagree. Why hasnt the media done a better job of pointing this out. As a libertarian I often wonder why those in the media dont just wear OBAMA t-shirts? McCain is at least an adult who has taken stands that his party has hated. And in 2000 GWB made sure he paid the price by smearing McCain. We need an adult in the White House since we havent had one for a good sixteen years!!! And we sure in the hell do NOT need more taxes.

    24. Pat Croft  10/17/2008 10:10 AM Report

hmmmmmmmmmm the plight of survival for 99 percent of this population and what does this government do? Bail out or rescue the .000001 percent of the population. Clearly there better be a debate. This debate did not address the above. That said All of Charlie Rose's commentators were great and almost better to listen to than the debate itself. Barack Obama has shown through other deliveries he is capable. We could be seeing another Abe Lincoln, FDR, JFK in his performance. He is that good.

    25. Christopher  10/17/2008 05:54 AM Report

I thought that Marc's analysis of the debate was right on. Also, Obama's cool puts everyone to sleep.

    26. movie fan  10/17/2008 03:33 AM Report

it's kindof sad that McCain and Palin have lowered people's standards so far that, when they finally manage to put whole sentences together during their debates suddenly they either "tie" or "are really making strides in their campaign" Between the two of them, they've got the pity vote locked away for sure. As for their actual competancy....

    27. Neil MacCallister  10/17/2008 01:29 AM Report

Maria did fine, ..she was the ONLY speaker not way to the left of (the already liberal) Charlie Rose! I think I even saw David Brooks wearing a Go'bama pin!

    28. pindar  10/17/2008 12:24 AM Report

Yes, no need to include Bartitromo with this smart group. Much better is Gretchen Morgenson or let Katty Kay or Doris talk MORE. Quantity does not make quality!

    29. Elizabeth Sarfatti  10/16/2008 11:23 PM Report

I am surprised that Maria Bartiromo has twice been included in recent panels. She doesn't offer any particular insight into or cogent intellectual engagement with the ongoing discussions. In a couple of instances she seemed kind of desperate in her attempt to make a substantive contribution.

    30. Arlea  10/16/2008 10:48 PM Report

I was astonished that Maria on your show after the debate talked about McCain's tax proposals

and raising taxes, namely the capital gains tax and she mentioned CG's going from 15% to 30%...

I don't know where that figure comes from. But she including selling your home in that category. I am not an accountant but I know that the tax law allows a couple a GAIN of $500,000 exempt from taxation ($250,000 single)

on the selling of your home. If a couple had a $600,000 gain on the selling of their home,

and the tax was raised to 20% which I believe

is what Obama has mentioned, they would pay an

additional $5.000. So on a $600,000 gain they would pay $5,000. Not a bad deal, I would say.

    31. Val Con  10/16/2008 10:03 PM Report

An overall good show. I think the lack of economic details on both parties is due to the fact change will have a negative affect on someone and they will cry bloody murder as a result. Derailed before you start.

PLEASE have Gretchen Morgenson back on. Smart without the double-speak or pack/fear mentality so many seem to have lately.

IF YOUR COMMENT TAKES UP A FULL SCREEN or needs more than one part-

      ### WRITE A BOOK PLEASE ### Dialog takes two or more parties, not my book of me by me.

    32. Dr. Emile Piscitelli  10/16/2008 10:02 PM Report

Why is it that when the middle class gets a tax cut, it is re-distributing the wealth but it is not when the rich or the big corporations get one? I know some are going to say the rich people "earned their money." Ah but they did so with the help of the “free market” made possible and secured by our democratic form of government and often with the help of tax incentives and laws that favor them. Moreover even when the middle class worker get a tax cut, he gets a pittance compared to the huge tax breaks the multinationals get. Then they go abroad and build their factories for the cheap labor and greater profits depriving their fellow American workers of decent jobs at home. Oh and let's encourage them to do that with more tax breaks so we can re-distribute the wealth to their stock holders who are already wealthy enough to own large blocks of stock. Then those same big stock holders want the middle class taxpayers to bail them out when their greedy schemes fail. Hurrah for the "Free Market!" Welcome to corporate America. We need more lobbyists to protect and preserve our fundamentalist capitalist oligarchy. This should get a rise out of the unthinking far right. Oh and let's find out who the plumbers of America are going to vote for. And why is Chris Buckley for Obama? Is this another case of thumbing your nose at a Vietnam Vet?

    33. bayravin  10/16/2008 09:15 PM Report

The significance of the choice of Ms. Palin is not discussed enough. Maybe, she has all the answers for the deficit and the debt. Remember, she has balanced the budget of Alaska.

    34. Ramesh  10/16/2008 09:01 PM Report

One question for MCain. Employers will start to drop group plans under his program. What is one going to do when a family has a child with an illness. The family won't be able to get insurance due to a pre-existing condition or if they can get insurance, their premiums would be sky-high. Private health care has fallen apart and the $5,000 tax credit is simply not comprehensive enough to provide any meaningful reform.

    35. Marty  10/16/2008 08:48 PM Report

Dear TABS, What does bucking one's own party prove? That one's own party has run off the rails? That one is registered in the wrong party? This 21st century global village needs someone who is less angry, less confrontational in negotiations than Bush or McCain. We need a level head, a dispassionate, calm person to work with other countries. Obama is a lot smarter than McCain or Bush or anyone else that thinks warmongering and "bring-it-on" rhetoric will keep us safe. To quote McCain, "We need a steady hand on the tiller." I don't think anyone can look at the conduct of both campaigns and fail to realize that the steady hand belongs to Obama. I base my judgement of intelligence on the fact that Obama graduated first in his class at Harvard Law School and McCain graduated 5th from the bottom of the Naval academy class to which he was admitted as a legacy admission. I've had quite enough of C students running my country. People might feel more comfortable having a cup of coffee with McCain but the presidency is not about being a good ole boy. I want someone who can run the country like Obama has run his campaign, not the fiasco that was McCain's campaign.

    36. sock puppet  10/16/2008 07:45 PM Report

Obama sold his soul (to the conservative right) with an ad that he says he's not worried about CEOs and lobbyists. BOTH are an abomination. He says he's championing the commoner instead. Well BS, you can't do one without (worrying?) about the other. Lobbyists are the first of our FOUR branches of govt. And the commoner (as we've seen) is the least of their concerns (purchases). He's in the pocket of Citigroup et al CEO scumbags. He'll continue to reward the thieves that scuttled our system to begin with. Nader's getting my vote.

    37. Patricia Mosson  10/16/2008 05:53 PM Report

I found the discussion very interesting. The commentators humanized the two candidates. It is easy to forget that McCain and Obama are real people.

Overall, my impression of the debate was that McCain doesn't understand the health care crisis in this country and that Obama does.

Also, McCain's statements about women being forced to follow through with unwanted pregnancies in order to give the baby up for adoption was horrifying.

    38. jrd  10/16/2008 05:31 PM Report

When will Charlie Rose finally realize that this pack of self-infatuated multi-millionaire faux-journalists has absolutely nothing to say on any question of importance to real people, and that beyond critiquing their own pointless analyses, they might as well live on Mars, for all the insight they bring to American life today?

    39. TABS  10/16/2008 05:19 PM Report

Some pundits are claiming that Mr McCain was trying to rattle Mr Obama into a gaffe during the debate? If that is the case then Mr McCain's frontal attacks were doomed to failure, as Mr McCain lacks the sophistication to unnerve Mr Obama.

      ..................................................................................................... .................................................................

Yet a character of Mr Putin's caliber would have no such trouble manipulating Mr Obama. Mr Obama would be an easy mark for a Putin. Except for one thing Mr Obama already subscribes to Mr Putin's heritage of a Leftist ideology. Thus a character of Mr Putin's dubious reputation would already have one foot in the door of the Oval office if Mr Obama becomes president.

      ..................................................................................................... ................................................................

Now ya see this is the kind of thing that ya need to say if ya want to unnerve an Obama.

    40. glasater  10/16/2008 04:43 PM Report

Obama talked 'way more than McCain and will not back down on all the taxes he wants to raise.

There is no way he can do all the things he wants to do with the horrible deficit we already have. It is not realistic at all.

Obama does not have a clue.

    41. Rosaline Diamant  10/16/2008 04:41 PM Report

Do you think people don't really want to understand Mr McCain? Thanks.

    42. Chandra Ramu  10/16/2008 04:33 PM Report

Here are my quick 2 cents worth comments about your show – I enjoy your show for your diverse interesting choice of topics, and greatly admire your knowledge or the homework you put into acquiring the knowledge about them.

      1. Martin Wolf said on your yesterday, 10/14/2008 show that the economic crisis has not affected South Africa and he didn’t know why and he went on to speculate a few reasons. And this surprised me a great deal. This is a classic example of how little we in America know about the rest of the world and their way of life.

Of course there is no credit crunch in South Africa and the banks haven’t lost their shirts (so to speak!). They don’t lend willy-nilly. No one from the street can walk in to a bank with shoe polishing box get a loan and walkout as you can in America. You need collateral for borrowing in Africa. Ah! Forgot, you need a social security number in America – no need to have a legitimate address. I expected this great scholar (that is why he is in your show), Martin Wolf and an authority like him should know.

      2. Live Coverage of the third Presidential debate. I am disappointed with David Brooks. Most of his comments and observations were shallow, the examples are:

      a) on John McCain(JM): “This is not the wound up guy JM is in real life”, “in happy times people like to hang around him”, “fun guy”. Can’t you see, he is cracking under pressure, he is loosing to a young black guy, every thing around him is collapsing and he behaves badly at the debates? Do you want a guy who can not stand up to the campaign pressure to be your president? Please don’t give me the story about his military prison experience, I admire him greatly for that but that is old story when he was young and fit - besides he could not behave badly there.

      b) His comment “Obama lacks deep need”. Give me break David Brooks, if you can’t see that you shouldn’t do what you do, or are you also angry like JM that this young black guy is going to be your president?

      c) His last comment “democrats will spend, spend, spend (3 times)”. Hello, David Brooks, wake up, “when did America have a balanced budget last and a great story to tell about the deficit? – I forgot, was Bill Clinton a republican?”

Charlie Rose: Thank you for your time. I am writing to you because I am sure that you will be fair in reviewing our (me and my friends) point of view. I think it would have been very interesting to have heard the comments from at least one non-WASP in the “Live Coverage of the third Presidential debate” – don’t you agree? That is another take away from the last “Firing line”: most JM’s campaign orchestrators are WASP where as Obama's is a great mix.

    43. beg to differ  10/16/2008 03:50 PM Report

The Clintons arent a soap opera - their coverage by media types was and is soap opera...and I predict the same for Obama coming. When Obama has to start coughing up some reality it isnt going to be accepted with swoons out here in reality land. People will forget the GOP made the mess and just see the mess and I hope to God that since the media made sure Clinton lost and Obama won, that their bias for the guy pays off for the American people and not just for their own column fodder.

    44. Mary Bradages  10/16/2008 03:32 PM Report

you compromise the credibility of the show with guests like maria bartiroma. she's not an exonomist and not a journalist, she states the obvious and provides no real value.

    45. sammy  10/16/2008 03:30 PM Report

      To Bob:

about the liberal big spenders . . . you, like so many other delusional Republican Americans seem to ignore the simple fact that the Republicans took a country with massive surplus and the biggest economy in the history of the world and turned it into the current black hole. What is the current debt of the USA? Are Liberals responsible for it? I guess to fellows like Bob they are responsible, not matter what the evidence suggests . . . just like dinosaurs roamed the earth with humans.

    46. Gina  10/16/2008 03:22 PM Report

Marty...BRAVO! Exactly you hit the nail on the head. That is exactly what is going on. I've always pointed out the same thing that John McCain carries a lot of anger and it is not well hidden. It is out there. I think he carries a lot of pain, a lot of hurt and it comes out as a maverick. I don't really see him as being so much of a maverick as I see him being more so of an angry man. What's interesting is the fact that the war he fought in and risked his life for was the Vietnam War. The war that was the 'catastrophe' war, the war we lost, the war Johnson broke into the Social Security coffers to pay for, (that by the way was ‘also’ the administration that changed party offices over to the Republicans), and it was the war that brought home a generation of men who upon their return still to this day do not feel they are respected. And they weren’t. They were not. These men fought that war and lost...came home and felt the American people turned their backs on them. John McCain is among that group of veterans that suffered behind that war. Indeed he still is an angry man....

    47. joe mccaff  10/16/2008 03:12 PM Report

the mccain knee pad comment is a little harsh, but that was pretty much my sentiment also. brooks and hunt said they hoped mccain would maintain his strong character in the last weeks of the election, isn't it too late for that? i liked mccain myself in previous elections, but it seems he started playing gutter politics a year or two ago when he hired the swiftboaters to do his advertising. or something like that anyway.but i think brooks and hunt might get their way because i saw a good man when mccain corrected the lady at his rally who said obama was scary. was i being a sucker and was mccain just doing what the media was forcing him to do? another point:mccain sacrificed more than most by being a prisoner of war . he watered that heroism down some by mentioning it in every town of the union during this campaign. and furthermore how did that sacrifice 35 years ago qualify him for president? it doesn't but obama obviously can't say such a thing.

    48. Gina  10/16/2008 03:04 PM Report

There are so many opinions coming from differing aspects of this political debate and race that I do not know where to start. I will go back to a few of my previous observations and points I made weeks ago. To not acknowledge and ignore the historical political facts is preponderous. As I've said before, regardless of the presidential debates, the arguments, the differing opinions as would be expected, I have never seen a party serving in office that has had a magnitude of scandal as the current administration has, get back into office to serve. On top of that, I will paraphrase what I said when Sarah Palin was first announced as being the Vice Presidential candidate when everyone else was singing her praises and hooplaing all over the place. I now believe most of us recognize what happened as being a trojan horse move by the McCain camp has now fizzled out. Palin's 15 minutes of fame is over and now we see the rusty nails of a shameless copycat attempt to win over the American people by showcasing a woman for the Vice Presidency as opposed to who everyone terms as being a black Presidential candidate. And I am sick of many of you people who are touting this man if he is elected as being a black President. If Barack Obama wins this race which I fully expect he will. He will not only be a black Presidnet serving but he will also be a 'white' President serving in office. Senator Obama is born of a white mother and a black African father. If he wins the country will have the both worlds representing them, (hopefully the best of). Black and White. In the future all parties need to recognize that they must keep corruption and scandal out of the White House if that party wishes to be elected to hold that office AGAIN. Whereas many say the 'average joe' does not have a say in the political governing of this country. On the contrary will have his say at the polls.....

Marc B writes: "I turn to Charlie Rose because every one of the journalists/analysts/commentators that he has on is intelligent, thoughtful, and outspoken. And on a personal note, anyone who doesn't appreciate Doris Kearns Goodwin's thoughtful commentary should just restrict their political intake to Bill Kristol's column in the Times. Oh, sorry. The Times is probably too liberal for you. Well, I'm sure you can catch him on Fox News."-----------------------------------------

Sorry Marc B, but one has to wonder what your usual diet is, if you find any of these drones "intelligent, thoughtful", etc. The fact that you seem to think Bill Kristol and Fox News are the only alternatives to Koris Kearns Goodwin does suggest that your range of exposure is narrow. That's not entirely your fault, since the left is unrepresented in the American media, and when Charlie has an actual leftist on the show, the poor guy or gal can barely get a word in, for Charlie's dismay that anything but the party-line gets spoken on TV. How about 4 or 5 pundits who, instead of trying to prove how insightful they are in parsing cliches, point out the obvious instead: another sham and worthless debate of talking points, foolish moderately by a clueless media celebrity who has no idea what the real world is like.

The best statement of this show was at the end,of the lack of checks and balances we will have with both the white house and congress controlled by liberal, big spending,(government hand-outs),pork barrel Democrats.

This will be like Pres.Carter,a Washington outsider, running and elected to change Washington,up against Tip O'Neal, lookup and see who won that battle.

Well tonight Charlie has The Queen of liberal, big spending(government hand-outs),pork barrel Democrats Nancy Pelosi on his show. I would hope that he has questions like:

How are you going to controll spending to reach a balance budget. After your record clearly shows, under your Leadership the past 2 years, the national debt has reached a 50-Year Record on Sept.22,2008 and $10 Trillion on Sept.30, 2008.

Why was it necessary for You to sneek and add(at the last minute),a $170 million Salmon Relief Bill(the single most costly handout-spending Bill know to mankind)to an already pork ridin 2008 Farm Bill that Pres.Bush vetoed and then congress overturned and passed.

With spending and add-ons like that where do we start?????????????
