Gotta love that theme music. Anyway, Koppel is wrong about so much in this interview. Waving a magic economic wand was his solution to the race problem? Of course Charlie didn't probe on the answer to this "burning" question he thought up. The usual cocksure and haughty Koppel then said that the Chinese will not demand repayment. Why is he so convinced of that? China and Indian have billions of people. Countries are investing in the continents of Africa and Latin America, and markets are emerging. They had better demand repayment soon, as the dollar continues it's steady decline in value. Koppel then when on to say that inviting an African-American to your house for dinner means that the race problem has been solved? What does that have to do with anything?

With such an interview you could as well have a big "Vote Obama" sign in the background :) (and I'm talking about the second part of the interview which was about foreign policy). I mean, there is nothing wrong in supporting Obama, but should not you at least appear neutral?

Dave Levy = Likudnik. On the Shelly Adelson payroll. Offshore, of course. Part of his duties as a lackey for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Heritage Foundation, and American Enterprise Institute is to spread Likudnik terrorist propaganda. Ask Mr. Levy about his personal hero, and the God of Likud-AEI-Heritage-AIPAC, Yigal Amir, and watch Mr. Levy and his offshore financial bosses starting laughing and then run.

I think people get the wrong idea from this interview about "The Last Lynching" (Note: I have watched it). First of all, you have to expect African Americans to celebrate the nomination of Barak Obama. The fact that there are people in this country who lived through a time when there was segregation, who had family members that were lynched or saw a lynching, and other horrific acts of racism means that we should not forget that racism being illegal is a fairly modern condition.
Whether or not Barak Obama should be elected is a different matter and that is up to every voter to decide for themselves. But whether or not he is elected does not take away from how far we have come. And, the fact is, we will probably have to have an African American president before the nomination of an African American is no longer considered unusual and elections are purely about ability to govern and race is not a large talking point (and we will go through the same thing with the nomination of a woman).
There is not a conflict between celebrating the nomination of an African American and choosing the right person for the job. Just like there is not a conflict between celebrating the nomination a woman and choosing the right person for a job.
The job of Americans is to not vote for Obama because he is African American but to vote for him because they think he is the right person for the job. If he isn't we have proven that in the future African Americans will have a chance to win the nomination and have a chance to become President and that really is worth celebrating.

Very moving. I was deeply touched by Koppel description of the prayer breakfast where they sang "We Shall Overcome." It is amazing what our country has been through within the lifetime of Koppel and Rose's generation. It made me truly hopeful again and grateful for all the potential in humanity. Also, seeing the Southern jury member say that he wanted to show that Southerners could take a stand against racism, that was something truly good. It demonstrated everything America stands for in the world and it is within our grasp to be that country.

OBSERVER 10/13/2008 04:17 PM Report
Dear Ted, we are amazed a person with your credentials, distinguished background and experience, talk so simplistic and naive of a
Regime such as Islamic Republic. The Regime consists of many factions.
As much as they appear different from each other, they work closely together, with the support of their establishment at home and abroad, they strive for the survival of the Regime. You have Ahmadinejad and his followers, Clergy Khamenei and
his followers, Clergy Khatami and his followers; and Larijanis'brothers
(one in Canada, one in Britain and one head of Majles, one head of Research in I.R.),ALL CONSIDER US GREAT SATAN, but exploite it for the survival of the Regime. And, you have the NATION OF IRAN, with mass unemployment, monthly rate of inflation of 30 percent (now), drug addictions, prostitutions, corruptions,........, struggling to make ends meet. TALK TO WHO??? TO WHICH GROUP????
ONE OF THE BIGGEST ERROR OF THE 20TH CENTURY, SUPPORTED BY GARY SICK, WAS THE ISLAMIC SUPPORT IN AFGHANISTAN AND REVOLUTION IN IRAN, IN ORDER TO BLOCK THE SPREAD OF SOVIETS. NOW THE WORLD IS PAYING FOR THAT. IRAN OF FORTY YEARS AGO, IF WAS SUPPORTED AND PROTECTED ,AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN, COULD BE NOW THE ISLAND OF WORLD STABILITY.

Ted Koppel's proposition boils down to "We should elect Obama because he's Black." That is racist. Koppel cannot distinguish between racism and race prejudice. There is plenty of race prejudice in the U.S. but little racism because--IT'S ILLEGAL. The sight of Koppel getting teary-eyed at the thought of Obama's election was nauseating. And, of course, Rose agrees with Koppel 100%. The sight of Rose getting aroused whenever Obama is mentioned harkens back to Rose's identical reaction when Bill Clinton's name was mentioned.

I loved the Interview with Charlie Rose and Ted Koppel. It was very Candid. Upon reading posted comments it amazes me that many people are still racists out here and it is nearly impossible for them to have a open mind, heart and spirit in light of a "Black" man becoming elected as president of the USA. In all of history it has never been a question of race in a presidential election based on the ethnic make up of our fellow european brothers so why is the RACE FACTOR now an issue? I can only imagine it comes up as FEAR. Black people in America has been institutionalized through a HATEFUL, GREEDY group of Racists who thought it was cool to de-humanize a group of people because what was given as a birthright. Black people had to fight and be killed for the respect of America civilization and today has suffered many times over because of these same regimens. New day, new age, it is time for the closed minds to Open, the blind to see, and the uneducated to gain knowledge on the areas of PEACE, LOVE, HUMANITY,LIFE, RESPECT, and Universal Law of Attraction. America has yet to apologize for the damage that it's done to the people of African descent. In a Land of Love, Peace, and Strength what does the color of one's skin have to do with Integrity, Honesty, Morals and Values? Wake up people or if you choose to be dumb, dummies and create a better world.
John Smith 10/11/2008 03:34 PM Report
I used to have great respect for Mr. Koppel. No longer. The challenges facing blacks America today are not from white racists, they are from within. Focus on that to help black America and all America. You fear that whites will vote for a candidate based on the color of his or her skin and you are so moved when someone with black skin is nominated. Double standard. No mention of all the blacks who vote for a candidate based on skin color. No mention of the hate spewed by Jeremiah Wright, that's okay, because he's black, and it's okay for Obama to accept it for twenty years. No mention of all the good whites who worked for civil rights and will now simply vote for the best candidate. On our "friends" in Europe liking us again when we elect a black president. After all we've do and do for Europe, thanks, I don't need fair-weather "friends." Don't you see they're just jealous of our power - that they don't have? Of course they want Obama, he is not America First, he might weaken the US and thereby allow other nations more power. No thanks. When Europe is still supporting the Palestinian terrorists, when China has enormous human rights problems, I'll stand by the good old USA, thank you. And you seemed to think that once we elect a black president, the Islamo-fascists will also stop hating us. We shall see.
Mr. Koppel said that Iran will get the nuclear bomb, we can't stop them. Mr. Rose did not disagree. Israel will stop them. I'm surprised you do not understand the danger of Iran having the bomb. They tell you they want to exterminate Israel. But you'll let them get it and then talk to them. Sure. They're reasonable, post-enlightenment people. I think you can trust them, why not?
Why do you seem more troubled by a lynching from 1981 than by a genocidal maniac in 2008 acquiring a nuclear bomb?
Mr. Koppel, your ideas need to evolve. In the 1960's white racism was a major problem in the US. Today we face other challenges.

It's ok to be a democrat. it's ok to live with a Black president in America it it were majority wins. however, the election process is subject to questions in due course.
We witness that the mainstream media is a one-party propaganda.
Thank you, Charlie. What amazing show tonignt. Absolutely Charlie you talked to a friend with a great deal of respect. But as seen and heard, Ted Koppel is a complete idiot with big 'I' and a 'MY agenda'. i watched his nightline over 20 years. What a spoil that BBC changed its independent tone, with this cat out of the bag -- TED behind BBC and those young breed broadcasters..mmmh no bloody good.
It is a political agenda of bigotry, propaganda of ideology!! Koppel was so full of himself tonight, and when he cast his suspicious eye, it is so revealing, i learnt recently the gungho dems would call it a 'freudian slip'--heehee.
The news headlines across America are all the same. Palin abused her power in Troopergate when in fact the judge ruled out the case that there is no wrongdoing in firing the staff.
Full of negativism. Ted was speaking from both sides of his mouth. who is he kidding about this Bradley effect? when he is promoting for a Black candidate.
Jewish America wants a Black president. After this 'last lynching', the white folks this time makes a 30% more concession to the blacks, ahem, there you go, a 60% win-win on Nov 4.
Ted reminds us of American policies are guilt- ridden over holocaust, a-bomb in Japan over wwII, the Korean war, the Vietnamese war, and now Ted said 'the last lynching', the Hollywood movies said the 'W' factor, and people right now are choked with financial holocaust.
What about that little twister book called 'the Shock doctrine'? Confusing? Not in the least, hell it may be with all the twisters around.
I am prep as my caucasian friend told me to live with the good and the bad. Just let me say we already see many bad guys running around America with their own global agenda. Those self-proclaimed foreign policy experts can easily run a shadow administration. which media running a propaganda, campaign ads brain-washing...all part of this election process, Ted is no exception.

What really puzzles me in the US is for a country so advance in science and many other things, their citizen (The majority of them) still have the mentality of 12 years old kids.
The other thing that really fascinates me is the fact that the Americans are so ignorant about other cultures- There is a big difference between Arab culture and other Islamic culture. The only common denomination between Muslim around the world and the Arabs is their faith. If someone compare the Muslims from let’s assume Ethiopia or India, these communities have nothing in common other than their faith with the perverted and backward culture of Saudi Arabia or Jordan.
US Politicians in order to get the Jewish vote ignore the fact that there are about 6 millions US citizens who practice the Islamic faith. The US Muslims have the same right as the rednecks of Virginia or the Jewish of NY. This is the beauty of the US Constitution – We all have the same constitutional right
The other point that I would like to bring is when government officials keep on repeating “we send oil money to the people who hate us” The US is not sending anything for free, the US is buying the Arabs oil – Commerce 101, period
The Arabs in the streets from Morocco to UAE don’t hate the citizen or the culture of the USA; they are only saying that the US should be fair in regard of the plight of the Palestinians people who live under the cruelty of the Jewish State. And please eradicate from your speech, “Arabs or Muslims hate us because of our superior culture or our freedom or whatever…” Why don’t you question yourself why don’t Arabs hate the people of Netherlands who have the most freedom than any other country or why don’t the Arab hate Canada or Italy or Sweden? Let me tell you dear compatriots – The US don’t play fair game in the Middle East. The US look down at the Arabs and their cultures while favoring the state of Israel

It's okay for the vast majority of the so-called blacks to vote for Obama caus he is black (actually mulatto), but not whites voting for a white candidate, then it's the Bradley effect. Something is horribly wrong here. It's okay for Obama to attend a church whose pastor hates whites, for 20 years, knowing full well how controversial this all is, yet if McCain attended a while church whose pastor was an advocate of the KKK, can we imagine the stink? It's okay for Ahmad and the mad mullahs to have nukes (it is acceptable in some US quarters apparently, including Charlie Rose). After all, what are a few nukes exploded over New York, or Saudi Arabia, or other Arab sunni countries (Iran is Shia), or Washington D.C., or Tel Aviv or Turkey....since the US will retaliate massively against Tehran. Oh come on, does anyone believe that? Iran will say.."We had nothing to do with it, maybe Pakistan, or even India, did this"?. Once Iran gets the bomb, what will the Saudis or Turks or Egyptians do, sit around praying to Allah that Iran will behave itself? Why doesn't Ted or Charlie adovcate we "engage, engage, engage", with our other enemies, Al Qaeda, and Osama? I'm sure he would also like to "Engage" to "Talk" about 911, transferring the blame. If the blacks are so innocent, why aren't we all running to live in their neighborhoods, but in fact, running away? Why is crack and drive-bys still the thing to do in some neighborhoods? Why is the drop-out in high school about 50% in some schools? Oh yes, I know, it's the fault of the teachers and administrators. One last comment, if Iran launches a few nukes, at let's say Tel Aviv and Jerusalem..coupled with thousands of rockets from Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria and Egypt...what does it matter that the US will, as with the Godfather analogy, retaliate. It's too late then my dear Mr. Ted, and you too Charlie. This was the most outrageous interview I've heard in decades. Koppel should go live in Tehran...and see how he is treated. Didn't the beheading of Pearl impact on him at all?
If Obama is so loved throughout the world (he would not have freed 50m Muslims in Iraq and Afganistan would he?), and he does not immediately withdraw out troops from each, will he be beloved then? What nonsense. Ted, wake up before you find your neighborhood under a mushroom cloud one of these days..or perhaps a dirty bomb, with no signature of course.

The Beginning of US Approved Terrorism after World War II begin when the United Nations (with the approval of the United States) took land from the Palestine People and gave it to the terrorist that rose up against the British Mandate of Palestine.
Governor Palin says that she supports the opening of a United States Embassy in Jerusalem. This Embassy is to be for Israel and it is not even within the so called legal 1948 boundaries established by the United Nations when it took land from the Palestine People.
If this Embassy is opened and consider to be an Israeli Embassy instead of a Palestine Embassy it will create more instability in the Middle East.
How can the Democratic and Republican candidates speak out in support of Israel when it is in violation of International Laws, United Nations Resolutions, is illegally occupying Palestine Land, and treats the Palestine People Inhumanly? Not to mention its arsenal of unregulated Nuclear Bombs. Former President Jimmy Carter is the only one with courage enough to speak out against the austerities being committed by Israel with the full support of the United States Government.
If you think that the United States should stop its support of these Israel austerities in your name, then contact your US Representative and Senators.

Fantastic discussion between Mr. Rose and Mr. Koppel!
I'm an Independent but I also teared up at home when Mr. Obama accepted the Democratic nomination, understanding what an amazing piece of history I was witnessing.
Growing up in the 80s and 90s, our history books tried to portray the civil rights fight as having been won and over...yet I still saw rampant racism and still do to this day. I'm glad Mr. Koppel acknowledged that the fight is not yet over.

Ted Koppel made reference to what has been called the "Bradley Effect" where Tom Bradley was leading significantly in the polls and lost to George Deukmejian for governor in California. What people forget is that there was a gun control initiative on the ballot that year. That raised rural "cow county" voter turnout far above the historic levels and that turnout defeated Bradley.
