The people have pointed America’s next President of the United States. “Change” is what the U.S. has chosen by electing Barack Obama. There is no doubt that change is in store for us. Whether this change is for the better or for the worse is yet to be seen. It’s obvious that Americans believe Obama will bring a positive change to our country. He spoke promising words to restore confidence in the hearts of the unsure with plans to lower taxes for the middle class, put a timeline on the war in Iraq, and cut the federal budget “line by line.” However, what many Americans fail to realize is the fact that Obama also supports the elimination of payday lending industries. He thinks demolishing the payday loan industry will protect low-income families from being victimized by predatory lenders. However, this will be a threat to our financial freedom. Maybe Obama will bring positive change to the United States, but taking away one of the most reliable resource many people have come to depend on during financial fallbacks is not only a risk to our rights to financial freedom, but it is clearly NOT a great start to create the positive change we all desperately need.

With just a little over a week left before we find out who will serve as our Commander of Chief for the next four years, there are new controversies between both the Democrats and Republicans. Not just the headline news, but the entire media and people across the country are reporting on Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin and her $150,000 spending spree on clothes, makeup and accessories. This story has captured a sudden flow of negative publicity. Although both Palin and Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama have spent large amounts of money on clothing, we should not allow this matter to distract us from the true focus that will affect the future of our country. After all, we live in a society where looks, more than anything, are the prime things that we judge people on. If you have one candidate enfolded in designer clothes, but someone else who looks as if they have a wardrobe from K-Mart’s clearance rack, the scale is beyond balanced. Obama’s TV commercials cost way more than what the Republican National Committee has spent on Palin’s clothes. Besides, it’s probably not a bad political move, considering all the attention Palin is getting with her wardrobe. Clothing is NOT one of the critical issues that we should base our focus on right now. The American people should judge the candidates on their plans for our future, and vote for the candidate that supports American’s right to freedom of choice, personal financial responsibility, and the continued rights to no fax payday loans.

In 2008, a global economic crisis was suggested by several important indicators of economic downturn worldwide. These included high oil prices, which led to both high food prices (due to a dependence of food production on petroleum, as well as using food as an alternative to petroleum) and global inflation; a substantial credit crisis leading to the bankruptcy of large and well established investment banks as well as commercial banks in various nations around the world; increased unemployment; and the possibility of a global recession.America’s collective brow is furrowed over the current economic crisis that careless mortgage lending has brought on. But did you know that Americans are not the only people who are impacted on a daily basis by plummeting dollars and good sense? The International Herald Tribune shows us that the worldwide credit crunch is very real in Europe, too. Small businesses like Dominique Boudier’s printing company, outside of Paris, depend upon credit with its suppliers in order to function, and her creditors are cutting back their offerings by half. This is by mandate of the suppliers’ credit insurance companies. Considering a typical 60-day lag time in which clients pay, Boudier’s business needs added cash flow to make up for this major shortfall. As her own bank’s hands are tied, she fears the worst. Her bank, like many others across Europe, began to put their money to sleep with the European Central Bank instead of investing it back into other banks and the economy as a whole. When banks began to fail and liquidity was disrupted, credit began to dry up. Much like America’s Federal Reserve Bank, the European Central Bank uses a mechanism based on the ability to create as much fiat money as required. Fiat-money currency, which is effectively credit money, loses value once government refuses to further guarantee its value. During this world credit crunch, we see this in high inflation rates. Many believe stronger private banking systems that make responsible decisions can solve this problem. Until that happens, payday advance loans will inevitably be easier to come by for consumers who need immediate short-term help and cannot wait on a faltering central banking system.

David Kernell is the 20-year-old son of Tennessee’s Democratic Representative Mike Kernell, and David got caught red-handed. Based on the CNN account “Democratic lawmaker's son indicted in Palin hacking,” David reset the password of GOP vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin’s personal e-mail account. David allegedly read the contents, took screenshots, and got a hold of other private information. Some of the information believed to be compromised includes Palin’s address book, photos of family and friends, contact phone numbers, and family birthdates among other things. Ironically, although David Kernell turned himself in, he pled not guilty. Why would he plead not guilty after he took the information he hacked from Palin’s personal account and posted it to a public website? Not only did David post Palin’s personal information to the public site, but he posted the new password he created, which made it possible for others to access and view Palin’s e-mail account. As a consequence, David Kernell could serve five years in jail, pay a $250,000 fine, and be subject to three years of supervised release. At the maximum of $1,500 per loan, that fine would require approximately 167 individual payday loans to free himself from the confines of prison

Wow. The "expert" responses are breathtaking in their acuity. Not! But I give them this, they do write with such grand authority!!

    8. Christopher  10/08/2008 01:03 PM Report

Marc Halprin was off about his evaluation of the debates. Just because Sarah is no longer Tina Fey material does not make it a "B". I thought she was at best a "C". It was all character, no substance. In the first presidential decision, you have to give Obama credit for better judgement in VP choice. And Sarah did not come across as presidential. So Marc, I think (and this is rare) was out of whack with his analysis. Doris Kearns correctly analysed the empathy factor, which Obama has more.

    9. lois   10/06/2008 11:18 PM Report

Aren't you offended by being referred to as "folks"? W introduced that term into the political vernacular. Media picked it up for everyday use and Palin is maxing it out in the continuing dumbing down of America. One pundit said "The Marge from Fargo trill wears thin fast".

I don't choose to be so lowly thought of for the next four years. We can't afford it.

    10. Gerry  10/06/2008 08:46 PM Report

I have just read the results of new WSJ/NBC poll and noted that the vice-presidential debate resulted in a huge vote of confidence for Joe Biden and no increase for Sarah Palin.

I don't recall your distinguished panel coming to that conclusion and Mark Halperin gave both candidates a B minus on his Page site. The American people have not been well served by the media in this election and watching your well dressed and well coifed panel laughing and joking as if there was no economic crisis

and even considering the frightening posssiblity that Sarah Palin could be the President some day was not reassuring. I will however commend you on your interview with Warren Buffet

    11. Scott Mc  10/06/2008 06:09 PM Report

I must admit I had my cringe factor set really high for this debate, and although Gov. Palin did not completely and utterly expose her lack of awareness of the world around her, she still did not answer 1 question, except, when she agreed with Biden about something irrelevant.

I am conservative by nature but I did not vote for any Bush, and I cannot vote for McCain. I would have 4 maybe 8 years ago, but he is Bush in a Gucci bag.

Senator Obama and Biden are the ARROW AND THE BOW that Washington needs to detach itself from (the) Wall Street, and Special Interest TIT.

I am not a fan of big social programs, that many democrats say are necessary, but the 700 billion bailout caused, and submitted by the republicans is one honk'in soial program that will never help any of the American people. Maybe Obama will at least try to help us on healthcare.

    12. Lynn  10/06/2008 04:22 PM Report

Cokie Roberts interrupts and interrupts and interrupts and when she is not interrutping she is making noises while others talk. When she does talk she sounds as though she is trading quips at a DC cocktail party. It's never anything very substantial. I heard her say one day on the ABC Sunday morning political program that Americans don't know what Bosnia is. She is out of touch. I like your program because you allow your guests to speak in full sentences and paragraphs (and even once to sing My Old Kentucky Home including the chorus.) That's what makes this program different from the others. Please maintain this aspect of your program. Thank you.

    13. Lois   10/06/2008 03:01 PM Report

The program was interesting and a welcome relief from the usual deadpan discussions of main media. A good giggle comes easily among truly smart people.

Is expression of anger or superiority the nature of blogging? Ventventvent-is that the point? Shouldn't it be open ended discussion?

Give it a rest. I daresay that none of you knew what "Bosniak" meant before the debate.

      ---------------

Arrogance again! St. Louis is full of Bosnian refugees, mostly Bosniaks. Besides, average Americans are perhaps entitled to their ignorance, as they are not being paid big fees to dispense their 'informed' opinions on national television. Yet, they have enough common sense -- unlike our favorite pundit of the day, Mrs. Roberts -- to look up a word whose meaning they might not know before denigrating others for being 'wrong'.

Far too much laughing in this little kitchen side chat. Are all these people so close that they can laugh at every little word or subtle reference?

I liked the discussion... but try not to laugh every other second at each other's sublime comments.

Remember, you guys on TV are not in your living room... you guys are disussing something very substantial and not trite at all.

I liked Katy BBC and her views. It seemed that the rest of the table was a bit dismissive of her views (that Brit knows anything? type thing).

Ms. Roberts looks like she has a serious health condition... ie skinny and not at all robust looking... is she in trouble with her health?

Joe Biden cleaned this mayor's clock and we can't afford to have her take over if McCain dies or becomes incompetent in office.

      Very substantive conversation.. thanks Charlie!

I write to second Leo Leonardo and go one level up (or two): Obama DID call John McCain on Wednesday morning to try to get both presidential candidates to issue a JOINT statement of support on the TARP. McCain didled for 6 hours and THEN, with barely advance notification, went on his boondoggle to rescue the bill on his own. But Obama did his work behind the scenes, where he could be most effective, unlike the totally ineffective McCain. But Mark Halperin did make a telling comment: McCain just wants the issue to GO AWAY (for the campaign). Then he can ignore it as President, he thinks, because he does not have an approach within his ideology that will fix it. The next time you have Roberts, Hunt and Kay on the show, ask them why they did not KNOW this! [And make them answer ON AIR!\ Obama did make a statement that "it is amazing what can be done when there are not people clamoring to take credit for it." [That is a paraphrase.\ Getting a solution to the problem, even if it was not the best possible -- and that is true in spades, mattered to him MORE than taking credit for it. It is unfortunately true that this bailout is a fig leaf, but if it can prevent the the ship full of holes that we are all in right now from sinking out of sight until the real Coast Guard can arrive, we HAVE to take it.

When is Charlie Rose going to publicly correct the Cokie Roberts gaffe re Biden and Bosniaks?

Before she continues to make more of a fool of herself....perhaps she should learn to use the Google.

As a matter of fact, both Rose and Roberts should have known that Bosnian Muslims are referred to as Bosniaks.

      Cokie Roberts,

When are you going to apologize for your rude, biased, eleatist misstatements?... IE. Bosnaik is in fact the correct term. How about that snide, insulting comment when the Obama family went to (exotic and foreign) Hawaii to visit his grandmother (who cannot travel due to her advancing age) By the way, where is Myrtle Beach... one of your favorite hot spots?

      Where exactly is Alaska then?

Fess up, as Sarah Palin would say!

Or perhaps you are too stuck up?

The debate participants agreed to a format and rules. Mrs. Palin by declaring that she would not abide to answer any question from the moderator is an insult to all our intelligence. And, how is it that all the guests of the show do not see such.

    22. John Bostjancich  10/04/2008 02:24 PM Report

I had to turn the show off when the participants engaged in conversation about the countries' economic crisis and congress' failures, punctuated by raucous laughter. I've previously seen Cokie Roberts break out into such uncalled for mirth on the abc Sunday morning show. Obviously the distinguished panel had no understanding of how offensive their attitude was. But of course if we do go into an economic meltdown, none of the panelists is likely to suffer much. It all depends on perspective, I guess.

The expectations for Palin were set so low that the debate was turned into the Special Olympics, where Palin's supporters cheered with excitement when she managed to finish a complete sentence. Never mind that Palin's response was not related to the question, as that would be asking for far too much. This debate came across like a SNL parody.

    26. TABS  10/04/2008 03:45 AM Report

Thank You Dr P. Someone needed to say that. Old Joe Ficalora of NYB said on a CNBC interview that he could see a cyclical downturn coming in the RE market. It was only a coupla weeks ago now, right here on Mr Roses show that Robert Rubin said he didn't see the RE debacle coming in the sub-prime bond market. Now if old Joe could see it coming why couldn't Robert Rubin the ex Treasury Secratary under Clinton see it? Again we come to either he was too dumb to see it or he was in on it, either way Mr Rubins future comments are worthless.

    27. Linda C. Martin  10/04/2008 02:42 AM Report

For years Cokie Roberts has presented herself as an representative of unbiased reporting. In last night's interview with Charlie Rose, it became very clear that she no longer holds the ABC status that she believes makes her not only a credible source, but one who must be believed. She is not "one who must be believed." Indeed, Roberts makes it clear that she is in the Republican camp. At least George Will has the courage to speak the truth about Palin. Why are all of the people on this panel so enamored with a woman who would NEVER get away with these antics in a corporate environment. Palin is frightening. Roberts never said that the emperor was naked during the Bush years, and she's so cemented into the Republican ideology that she wouldn't recognize nakedness if it smacked her in the face. The only person on this panel who wasn't afraid was Doris Kearns Goodwin. Cokie Roberts is everything Palin says she isn't--a Washington insider. She should be exposing Palin for the fraud that she is. Instead, Cokie Roberts gets angry when others confront her with the truth. Could it be that she thinks she's another McCain? I've watched this woman for years. She is lame. I'll say it again. Cokie Roberts is lame, and she's a coward. She's never had to be a single mother and send two kids to college the way I did. I could never take her seriously. You're damned right I'm angry. Roberts had crossed my line one too many times.

In the context of the millions of Americans suffering because of the failing economy, the laughter exhibited on your program is excessive. You folks are having a good time while we are struggling to pay for medication. On a positive note, your guests have provided many valuable insights.

    29. Keith  10/04/2008 02:10 AM Report

The bailout plan is completely unjust but must be done. It is severely unpopular because it is unjust, but the credit market will continue to slow to a stop without urgent legislation. The banking industry lobbied effectively for 20 years for the deregulation that allowed them to become insolvent once the housing boom ended. As Warren Buffett and others recently have explained, there are better ways to save the economy, and better ways to save foreclosures--putting Fannie & Freddie into conservatorship immensely helps that--but those strategies take much greater time to legislate.

    30. Keith  10/04/2008 02:06 AM Report

This was a very interesting show! Great panel that is well informed and exciting. People (like Biden said in the debate) are hurting. Why can't the McCain camp recognize that. Their campaign messages are making me dizzy. It's like watching a pendulum swing back and forth. The only conistant message from them is the war. This administration has no clue on the economy. The bailout may be too little too late. It's like trying to plug a sinking boat half full of water with a thousand holes. People have no savings, little or no equity in their homes, high gas prices, and tight lender rules and McCain talks Iraq. I not only blame the party in power but also the democrats for such little action. They have a habit of caving. I believe we should replace each and every one of the representatives in both the house and senate. I know people are angry but will they act on it or will they as usual just complain about it from their sofas? If history is any indicator I bet they will just it and complain. Status quo.

The 850 billion dollar bill signed into law today will not fix the credit crunch. Everyone admits that from Paulson on down. What it will do is allow an ex-wall street insider secretary of the treasury help out his friends on Wall Street so the banks and other financial institutions can unload their bad loan bundles probably at higher prices than they are worth and only after they have unfairly adjusted their balance sheets and they can find new ways of making exorbitant profits by re-entering the credit markets will the the credit begin to flow again. Warren Buffet is wrong. It is not the economy that is sick and on the floor, it is our largely unregulated economic system that is sick. We should let the patient die. We don't have a free market and it's not because we have regulations but because the market cannot regulate itself. FDR was right when he said the depression was not a natural event. It was man made. Humans are responsible for it and humans have to fix it. McCain has no idea what is wrong or how to fix it. Obama has the very people who have helped bring the economy to this disastrous result on his staff of economic advisers. Good luck with people like Bob Rubin advising Oboma, Bob Rubin who supported the legislation that allowed banks to enter the volatile credit markets, Bob Rubin who nearly destroyed Citibank and left with a 100 million dollar golden parachute. At the end of his term as president, Clinton said he was proud to be a de-regulator of the markets. The day Clinton left office he passed out pardons to some of the richest Wall Street insiders who were found guilty of fraud and corruption. No wonder the American people do not trust their leaders.

It is obvious since Gov. Palin was picked she has had an uphill battle against the the truly liberated women of the media. I'm not sure if its the number of children (by the way how many children is a truly liberated successful women allowed to have?), her Alaska roots, being a conservative, etc. but the response has been at best condescending and at worst unbelievably hostile. So to think the group assembled last night would be objective is ludicrous. But that's life if you don't like what you hear turn the dial or shut off the set since there is no hope they will change. I do believe Connie Schultz should identify herself as a liberal columnist whose husband is the liberal democrat senator from Ohio. I don't begrudge her her opinion but if it's OK to say who she is in her column why not here. What's wrong with being honest about who you are or are we supposed to guess that from the cutesy asides and snickers during her comments. As for the rest they appear enough on the various "in depth" political talk shows it's easy to know where their bias lies.

So if you want to see a biased one sided appraisal keep watching NPR and remember this is the network that kicked the WSJ Editorial Report off the air for being to one sided!

For a follow up on the Main Street Bailout/Wall Street Rescue plan how about inviting former FDIC Chair William Issac to visit several members of the house thought enough of his opinion to do so.

Insane. Now I understand why the folks against this bailout were the first to write their congressman. They were actually paying attention. Then to have Cokie Roberts and others denigrate citizens who wrote their congressman is ludicrous. You apparently have absolutely NOOOO idea how ticked off people are. I have always loved watching Charlie Rose but unfortunately last night's exchange has changed my opinion. I'm weary of elitism and like my peers may actually write my own name in for President. Keith: thanks for your detail - although too late for my bedtime. If you read this heres my reply. Kissinger comments - dead on in sync with McCain. Obama is on video in the primary debates saying specifically hed go w/out preconditions - media NEVER calls on it -Palin extremely effective. Afgah bombings - believe it or not she was responding to Obama's slandering of US troops in Afghanistan - not Iraq. Heartbeat away - a set up question obviously, Biden gave no specifics actually Palin gave basically the same answer then ignored the questionas she should have and articulated a vision - actually the best domestic part of the debate for her. Her handicap is she cant (and Biden cant either) talk about what they'd do. Its their bosses. On energy dont know why they bother with climate change. She has to deal with McCains weird liberal position. So she sounds like an idiot with "dont know the cause but must solve it" how about - who cares - real issue is energy SECURITY. Overall though an excellent job of cutting though the ever present bias and double standard. Talking past the madoerator and the questions - a massive plus! Why play on the opponents field (media)? Challenge their faulty assumptions and assert yourself. That why she dominated. The media dont like it - who cares - their voting for Obama already anyway. Got to know your audience. Thanks.

      Sarah Palin:

Rah, Rah, Sis, Boom, Bah! Hooray! A cheer leader for President---- (McCain is ancient)! We all know that McCain is a big liar. Evidently Sarah Palin fits right in with him. In the debate Palin repeatedly lied about Obama and about Biden. Perhaps she thought Joe Biden wasn't listening. Joe Biden repeatedly corrected her, pointing to the record. Further, Palin didn't want to answer the questions, deliberately talking about HER choices of topic. She's a politician alright. I found her EXHAUSTING to listen to.

Mr Levy - your easy bellicosity validates the prophets apocalyptic forecast of impending Armageddon doom. Extinction in the name of the homeland will be worth it, eh what?

I enjoyed the debate as I thought it revealed both people very clearly. Gwen did a superb job.

After eight years of George Bush, the folksy guy you could imagine having a beer with, and turn out to be the most incompetent president in modern times, it is hard to understand why Sarah Palin's uninformed, but folksy comments don't scare the hell out of people. This woman could end up being president.

    47. Dave Levy  10/03/2008 05:21 PM Report

This was not a debate, but a news conference

by both candidates. I agree with some who say, let's change the format entirely and force them to debate in the halls of Congress, to be questioned by their peers..sort of like a trial by jury (fire). What's the use if it's all scripted, a rehash of their campaign speeches? We learned nothing new, except that Palin was obviously prepared and more comfortable. Why did the moderater, who herself is for Obama, have anything to do with this, I ask? Each candidate should have been part of a 3 person team..with anyone able to ask questions. Biden is a pro-like McCain, smooth, a great talker. Hes been around the block many times. Palin is like Obama, a novice for the most part, with little governmental experience. Her being mayor in Alaska is worthless..her state has less people than where I live plus a few neighborhoods. Does that quality her for anything. Likewise Obama's being a community organizer is of no value. I was a senior patrol leader in the Boy Scouts..and have more experience, so what.

I would have asked the candidates in reference to Iran, "Considering the economic dangers inherenet in a nuclear Iran, will you as VP

approve or encourage the bombing by our B1s and 2s, of those 3 Iranian nukes sites? Now that Syria is again building nuclear plants..will you agree to have them bombed by the US and or Israel?

I see that Charlie Rose is again interviewing an Iranian official, giving him a platform in the USA that our government obviously has avoided. I would ask Charlie, when Iran sends it's Shihabs into Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and directs them at the US in Iraq and the Persian Gulf AND uses surrogate terrorist groups to explode a nuke in an American city, what then will you be asking Iran?

    48. Neil MacCallister  10/03/2008 05:06 PM Report

Charlie asked: "Why have the peoples' feelings about government changed"? Perhaps that is the wrong question. In fact, it is the government which has, and is, changing. The range Mr. Rose considered was "Teddy, through Franklin, through Clinton, through Bush". What has changed more across that time, our "feelings" about our government, or the size of our government?

How many government-linked paychecks were written in 1901? ..How many are being written today? How many mortgages does the government now own? What percent of our GDP is produced under government direction? What percent of America's payroll (..and "payouts") come from the government sequester of the public's money? Is that good economics? Is whatever change the last 100 years not a reason for the public's attitude about government to "adjust'? If we REALLY want "change", ..we will NOT vote for a larger growth of government, .."change" would be to turn that around.

I think the program with Warren Buffet was the best explanation of the current economic situation I've seen. The most important thing I heard Mr. Buffet say was that the bailout plan was a good investment for the American people ONLY IF the bad mortgages are bought for market price. I hope Charlie will keep repeating this in weeks to come and have Mr. Paulson on soon and ask him if he is going to follow his good friend Warren's advice. I am sorry I watched last night's panel program. I have already written to Cokie Roberts via the NPR website protesting her derogatory comments toward people who e-mail their Congressmen. I am neither far right or far left, just a plodding Democrat who will vote for a good Republican or Independent on occasion, but I am really upset by the bailout and have e-mailed my Congressmen for the first time in my life. Charlie, I completely agree with the comments of Ursula Peter-Czichi, Merelice, and Bob from Newton.

i don't get it. were people not paying attention to the debate. since when can someone be considered to do well in a debate, when they avoid most any question in which the answer wasn't embedded in the question. i believe both biden and palin performed very scripted lines which very often digressed far from the questions asked. but palin would outright change the subject, for example, when asked about bankruptcy and mortgages, she went off about energy plans. or when asked about israel and palestine, she went off about iraq. this is the essence of the criticism of her: she simply does not understand questions about important issues, and will just try to change the subject. i agree biden didn't perform as well as i expected him to, but its almost a joke how any one could say that palin held her own during the debate. just because you can talk clearly doesn't mean you win a debate. its not supposed to be about people showing they can seamlessly change the subject when they don't understand an issue that is presented, but rather about the ability to understand and answer questions on important issues as they are asked.
