This is a great interview and it is really funny they should do another interview

You are adding an awful lot to the small script I wrote, Andy. I spoke of my discomfort at a drug lifestyle being made light of at a time of expanding failures in education. Next, I questioned why we so rarely hold Hollywood to the same socio-economic ethical standards we so screamingly insist must be met by other large corporate enterprises. Finally, I remembered that these two gentlemen were young, and may rethink their storytellings should they ever become personally responsible for a child's progress. That is all I said, and I'm sticking to it. Thank you for adding your own opinions.

So are you proposing that hollywood just stops making movies altogether since children are using the money they got from selling drugs and sex to buy movie tickets? Should people not be allowed to get rich because people who are less wealthy than them are spending money on the product they created? I understand how you might think this movie is a bad influence...but that can be said about any movie. People go to movies because it takes them away from real life for an hour or two, makes them laugh, makes them think, makes them cry, gives them hope, scares them, etc. It is a fantasy land. If we just explain to kids that a movie is an escape from real life not a guide for it, then I dont think it would be as big of a problem as you make it out to be (although I dont think it is anyway). I think most of the people who went to see that movie knew that it wasnt supposed to be a moral guide. If anything it showed that drugs are dangerous and get you into trouble, but did it in a funny way.

Sorry I depressed you Andy, but there are more important issues at stake. Do you know that Hollywood is in a state where some high schools post a 50% dropout rate? A lot of kids sell dope (or sex) for the money they might use to see "The Pineapple Express". Mr. Apatow and Mr. Rogen are in that "Top 1%" of wage earners that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (..herself there!) berated on Mr. Tavis Smiley's show on Monday for "That giant sucking sound as middle class money is being pulled to the top!" If you laughed at this movie, fine. These movie makers laughed too, ..all the way to the bank. Now the only question is: "Where shall we put this year's supply of drop-outs?"

edit: "their" lives not "there"...I know you would call me out on that : )

    6. Andy  08/11/2008 11:53 PM Report

Wow, Neil...I would hate to have to hang out with you for even five minutes. Maybe, just maybe, you should raise your sixteen year old daughter that is sneaking into the movie theater to not take a "comedy" movie as real life. Raise her to make the right decisions regarding "weed" and "40 oz'rs" (haha) and driving under the influence. Maybe you should quit trying to hide children from things they are inevitably going to experience at some point in there lives and guide them on how to react to it when they do and they just might make the right decision. Children do grow up, you know.

Comedy is a form of art and intellect whether you like it or not. Making masses of people laugh is not an easy thing, but I sincerely doubt you have ever tried. If you cant laugh about life then what is the point in living? I for one choose not to live my life depressed and worried about everything bad around me and try to enjoy my time here on earth. Sometimes, a good Judd Apatow movie is just the thing to do it.

    7. Neil MacCallister  08/11/2008 09:52 PM Report

Sorry, you defenders, ..but a film celebrating the life of two potheads is not funny, it is a milestone on the path of de-evolution. Let's ask these gentlemen again when they have a 16 yr. old daughter who sneaks in to see it, red-eyed, with a bunch of her friends and a 40 oz'r.(..and I wonder which friend will be driving?) Why is it we rail against "Big Oil" or "Big Pharma" for what we claim is a behavior which tries to "make money at any opportunity", ..yet you defend here some imagined Hollywood "Right" to try for millions of dollars off a "comedy" about the drug culture devastating our children?

How is it that none of these comments are about the quality of the interview? Is this really a forum that you people use to talk about whatever high minded idea you have at the moment? Pathetic. You do realize you're talking in the fourth person when you say "one would..." Just when you think the third person is pretentious. And about this show needing to discuss more serious stuff, where do you get off deciding what is serious or worthy of being discussed? It takes someone really naive to think that Pineapple Express is just some stupid stoner movie and not be curious about what cultural affect it has. If this was the only movie that Rogen and Apatow had made together, this mght be a stretch, but they have a whole body of work that's new and unique and reaally funny and American and interview-worthy. "When do we get back to work?" We were never at work.

    9. RussianG  08/08/2008 04:51 PM Report

There is nothing really wonderful coming out of France, it is all erotic, vulgar fluff that's supposed to shock audiences but it usually ends up flat, trite and uninteresting. Americans are making great films, but you have to know where to look. You're obviously not looking in the right places.

    10. scripts7  08/08/2008 04:45 PM Report

I agree with the comment regarding spending a high-minded show on low-minded entertainment. One would expect a film interview of creatives involved with cinema such as "Mongol" or some of the wonderful stuff coming out of France, like "Roman de Gare". America is producing films with "stupid" (but lovable? Hollywood-speak) male characters. American filmmakers are being forced to toe the line or not get produced.

    11. Ted  08/07/2008 01:03 PM Report

I really admire Judd and Seth for their work and making comedies funny again. However, I'm waiting for the Apatow gang to make a movie that is a little deeper... something with a more powerful message. I have heard Apatow name Being There as the type of film he'd like to make, yet for now there is no indication that he is going to make a movie that sophisticated, reflective, and still funny.

    12. neme  08/06/2008 10:25 PM Report

Charlie Rose does an hour long show, five nights a week, all year long. With topics like war, politics, eductaion, science, religion, and technology. And your complaining that he spends twenty minutes with a couple of guys about a film comedy.

    13. Neil MacCallister  08/06/2008 08:29 PM Report

I don't get it, guys, ..the DC schools have degenerated into a Dodge City shootout, the California Congress can't figure out how to actually write a budget, and our Presidential candidates can't remember if we are supposed to honor our National Anthem or not. Now Charlie Rose is interviewing people who put comedies about confused pothead stoners on the big screen for us to, I guess, just "mellow out" and laugh about life. I suppose I just missed the recess bell. I'll go get a drink of water, ..When do we get back to work?
