You interview was pretty good and the interviewed is a nice guy but, to that most of the soy beans that Brazil sells to China comes from the Amazon is irresponsible and pure ignorance! I believe that the profession of reporter would require more attention to what is said more than just repeat what you hear somewhere by some one. I think that is the case.
There are criminal deflorestation for several economical reasons in the Amazon region. The production of soy beans or sugar cane (for ethanol) would be some of the last of those reasons.
The arable land in Brazil is not totally exhausted as in China and US. The technology to produce soy on the savanna (Cerrado) was developed through the 80's and the expansion of soy beans started decades before the increase of the Chine demand.
There still a lot of land that is legally according to the Brazilian Ecological-Economical Zoning for agriculture. But the price of legal land could look to high for criminal farmers that understand that the laws, the justice system and law enforcement are two slow to catch then in the act or charge them appropriately afterwards.
