Bosnia/Kosovo- but for US action in the face of a feckless UN and International Community, there would have been far greater tragedy and loss of life. Where were the Europeans then?

Charlie, you are not a baby boomer. You were born during the war-not after it. Baby Boomers include those from 1946-60.So, you missed it by four years and Obama by only two.

Tony Judt over that tacky Al Hunt any day, thanks.

    6. The American model is superior  06/09/2008 04:02 AM Report

In response to the comment posted on Jun 7 at 06:14 AM:

I am not an American. I am not a Westerner and I prefer the American model over the European model. I only wish my corrupt government worked with America instead of Europe, and I will do my best, as a student, to change the policies of my country, as I see Europe as a provincial, petty little region of no import, and look to America for its ideals, for its fine example, its strength, dignity, morals and superiority. Europe is but a provincial, rotting backwater, and I, like many others, in no way look up to it. On the contrary, when I see Europeans insulting Americans and accusing them of war crimes, I cringe. Who can forget Europe's bloody history? Europe's unsurpassed crimes against humanity? Europe's moral degeneracy and hypocrisy? Europe's barbarism? You are not fooling anyone with your hypocrisy, and do not think for a minute that you serve as a model to anyone but yourselves, petty as you are and self-obsessed. My goal will be to sabotage Europe in my region and country, and I hope that American power replaces that of Europe one day. How typical of the lecherous Europeans to attack America at this time. I only wish America had not helped Europe during WWII. However, I firmly believe that with the new presidency, America will recover, though it has not in anyway lost its power (it is just that unlike Europeans, Americans are extremely self-critical, whereas Europeans propagandize, mythologize, distort etc.) and continue to serve as a model of what human beings can achieve when they aim highest. If Europe surfaces once again, it will mean the degeneration of our world, and our world will once again be steeped in filth, immorality, degeneracy, injustice, backwardness and pettiness, hypocrisy, double standards and depravity.

    7. American is the greatest! We aspire to its greatness- a Foreigner  06/09/2008 03:44 AM Report

      As a non-American and a non-European, I thought I'd comment on the page:

I would much rather watch a race horse than a mouthpiece like Judd, as he spews nonsense that he himself does not believe, as if evidenced by his meekness. I was entertained by the effort though and I particularly enjoyed the segment where he speaks on behalf of non-Europeans. As a non-European, I assure you that I would never choose the Euro over the Dollar. I can't wait for America to rid itself of Bush and become our leader once again! America, we prefer your example over Europe's! We welcome you and shun Europeans and we hope with the new presidency, you will regain your authority in the World, an authority that is respected and looked up to by the conscious and educated. Do not believe the propaganda that Europe spreads about the World hating you, we LOVE AMERICA AND KNOW THAT IT WAS FOUNDED ON THE GREATEST IDEALS! We believe in your greatness and know that you will recover once again!

    8. Europeans surface, the inferiority complex wails  06/09/2008 03:33 AM Report

I am not at all surprised that this forum, if you will, has been hijacked by Europeans with an inferiority complex. How amusing that they should reference books written by a Paki by the name of Zakaria or one entitled the European Dream, how very predictable and absurd. The fact of the matter is that Europe is a joke that depends largely on the pity and failures of its neighboring Arab World- essentially, in order to survive, they must go around begging for commerce, feign as though Europe still played a role in world affairs, and now, finally, in a desperate attempt to survive the 21st century, do what they do best- IMITATE AMERICANS, EMULATE AMERICANS AND TRY, RIDICULOUSLY, TO SOMEHOW BECOME AN AMERICA OF SORTS. As a foreigner, not an American and certainly not a European, I watch with glee! It is simply hilarious to watch Europeans turn to Croatians and other 5th worlders in an effort to be of note. Luckily, with the advent of China, Russia and the so called 3rd world waking up, they will soon drown in their own slime. I cannot wait for Europe to enter its inevitable dark future- The Dark 21st Century awaits you, Europe! But keep amusing us with your clownish attempts at influence, and keep imitating Americans. It's fun watching provincial, petty little fools imitate the Big Guns of America. Again, I'm in stitches over the reference to a work by Zakaria, the Pakistani.

    9. Ferdinand Gajewski  06/07/2008 02:25 PM Report

Has the Polish government had any second thoughts about the American First Amendment? And yes, Tony Judt should have been given the whole hour. Race horses, mon dieu . . .

    10. RE Comment by Sean Stevens on Saturday, Jun 7 at 05:45 AM:  06/07/2008 06:38 AM Report

"Tony Judt deserved much more time. I was very disappointed to see that you devoted most of the show glorifying a race horse, leaving only about 20 minutes for Tony Judt." --- Judt was *lucky*! Charlie used to typically give *12 minutes* to Palestinian-American scholar EDWARD SAID and the rest of the time to someone like sitcom actor TOM ARNOLD (comedienne Roseanne Bar's ex)! (No offense, Tom Arnold.) But, in fact, it does fit today's mainstream American news media, more interested in horse races of any kind (literal or political), or American verbal chest-beating about something, or "noble cause" apologetics for military debacles (like the one in Iraq), rather than any degree of true/r enlightenment.

    11. -- As the U.S. sinks into its own abyss boors like "Tony Lies" & "RE Mant" will only get louder: --   06/07/2008 06:14 AM Report

...As the U.S. dollar continues to sink against the Euro, the Pound, and the Canadian dollar, and every other major currency! (Already in some non-European countries, even in the 3rd World, people prefer to get the *Euro* over the U.S. dollar!! -- as even one high-fashion model stipulated in her contract.) All empires eventually fall/decay from mindless hubris and arrogance, from gross miscalculation, from that last ultimate overreach, and finally from the belief that it's military is all that ultimately matters (and like with the fall of Rome, the U.S. has been increasingly recruiting noncitizens as ordinary footsoldiers, because its own citizens, moreso and moreso, would rather cheer on questionable and ultimately foolish foreign military adventures, rather than fight in them), from the rich getting _richer_ (as they routinely fill up very expensive restaurants, with *one meal* that could cost the average person a week's groceries or more, or go to resorts that for *each day* would cost the avergage person a month's rent or more) and everyone else steadily getting _poorer_: empire's fall/decay from wasting its treasury, its spirit, its moral credibility and int'l regard, and even jeopardizing its economy on that one last protracted foreign war for sake of (as in Vietnam) its "int'l (political) credibiity", and finally from not even being embarassed to have bombastic dolts and idiots (like Reagan and Bush, & Co., each for two terms), and their regime incompetents, lead and represent the nation. No empire *intends* to fall, but they all have for all or most of these reasons.

    12. Sean Stevens  06/07/2008 05:45 AM Report

Tony Judt deserved much more time. I was very disappointed to see that you devoted most of the show glorifying a race horse, leaving only about 20 minutes for Tony Judt. And then you actually edited his interview so it ended while he was in mid-sentence.

Though my own politics[*\ are to the left of Tony Judt's politics, I appreciate the depth of his concern, the quality of his analysis, and his cosmopolitanism embodied in his values.

The need for us to hear more of Judt's words is indicated by the hostility expressed in other comments left by your viewers. As the wars of Central Europe recently demonstrated, the alternative to cosmopolitanism is fascism, militarism, nativism and "ethnic cleansing."

So please, re-broadcast the Judt interview, and dedicate an hour to it if possible. Posting the full interview online is no substitute, either.

[*FYI: My own politics are allied with those of Michael Hardt & Antonio Negri, each of whom I have been reading for nearly 20 years. So unlike Judt, I believe we can and should move beyond capitalism, and the alternatives do not include socialist states. As Negri & Hardt have shown, free & democratic noncapitalist forms of production and organization already exist in the west. And as their proposal for a "new Magna Carta" indicates, realistic steps also exist for moving beyond capitalism, beyond the so-called "free market", on an international level. It would be nice to see Michael Hardt, at least, return to your show.\

Jeremy Rifkin wrote an excellent book explaining the development and workings of the new Europe.

I would recommend that people read The European Dream By Jeremy Rifkin.

    14. peurile Americana  06/07/2008 02:45 AM Report

I've read many RMant posts with trepidation, as I always want something more - like a neat conclusion, a summary of what I'm supposed reflect upon. I always come away feeling ill-equipped to handle it, so I guess I should skip over them. My self-esteem's too fragile.

    15. peurile America(n)  06/07/2008 02:33 AM Report

The 01:49 AM post sorely needs to read: 'The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order," by Parag Khanna; and "The Post-American World," by Fareed Zakaria. ------------ A quote from the first, "The EU's common market is the largest in the world - and will stay that way no matter what America's economy does. ---- The Eu is easily the most popular and successful empire in history, for it does not dominate, it discuplines. . . . "

    16. Tony Lies  06/07/2008 01:49 AM Report

This guy is a real propagandistic jackass. He's obviously blowing Europe's horn and dares to speak on behalf of "non-Westeners" as to their impression of the petty emulation of the USA that is the EU. In truth, Tony, Arabs and other non-Westerners think the EU is just a pathetic little attempt on a rotting people to play a role in the world once again, and nobody looks upon it with any interest or admiration. It is mindboggling and typically European for a European man to speak of tiny Europe on the same scale as the USA, and sadly, Americans, being naive, allow it to happen and indudlge in the ultra-critical, anti-Americanism that Europeans like to indulge in. When he recounted the anecdote about the Spaniard and how his vision of America was crushed by Guatanamo Bay, I couldn't help but cringe. Why did Tony not mention the countless criminality that Europeans have engaged in vis-a-vis non-Europeans? Selective Amnesia anyone? And why are Americans so stupid as to never bring up these points and challenge these petty little wanna-bes? Europe is not a model of interest to anyone with half a brain. It is quite obvious that Europeans are simply once again emulating Americans, down to the minutest detail, and trying desperately to make the EU out to seem original and unique loool Come on, what have they done that is so original? They even themselves admit that they are now looking for a European THomas Jefferson, but think of the circus, incompetence galore. No Arab, no South American, No Asian looks to Europe for models; it is the Europeans who turn to others in despair in order to grow, because contrary to Charlie's brouhaha, they are no economic power. They have no future, and as soon as Eastern Europe is further immersed, they are sure to drown. Good riddance. Now will Americans speak up for themsleves and point out the obvious? Such as the obvious fact that, as has always been the case, Europe is simply imitating America once again? And why can't Americans see just how anti-American this Tony is and how anti-American Europe is? Their goal is to usurp the states, which is laughable. I hated this petty little man's interview, it was worthless propagandistic opinionated make-believe.

    17. RE Mant  06/07/2008 12:10 AM Report

A war has been waged against teaching traditional European and American history, ideas, philosophy, and religion for a generation here, it should not be forgotten, by the so-called politically correct, who have preached a cultural relativism, really a Marxism of so-called oppressed ppls. No doubt it played a part in the Obama phenomenon. Philosophy has also transformed itself into analytical gibberish unrecognizable to a previous generation. The social sciences and professional schools are now preeminent at the college-level, and these, increasingly experimentally and mathematically based. The only saving grace has been that more students than ever have been able to afford to travel in Europe, altho without a draft, etc., there are many fewer who have been in uniform abroad. IMHO it would have been far better to have lost all of the social sciences, which besides being an intellectual wasteland, have become a sort-of neo-scholasticism of commentaries upon commentaries, and none of it showing any ability to write clearly, much less think so. History, religion and philosophy - the "Western canon" - IMHO, are a far richer source for the study of these and it would have been far better if they had been lost instead, because there truly is nothing new under the sun. I would take issue with Judt if he thinks the past was really a foreign country. It is only so to those who have never been there. What we have lost with the Western canon is largely the Protestant Reformation and nationalism along with its ethical base, and, it seems to me, we are in the process of developing a new feudalism.
