The interview was fascinating. I have not spoken to Peter in a while but am always touched by his "love" for my grandfather, Edgar Watson. My mother, Edgar's last living child celebrated her 98th birthday last month. She is forever grateful to Peter for giving her a father she never knew but was no longer ashamed of him. As for Peter's political views, I agree with him 100%.

Fascinating interview - obviously 2 intelligent individuals on the same wave length! Would love to share a dinner with the two of them. PM's writing is extremely powerful and moving. He is a master of evocative writing. Every one of his books is worth careful attention. He is truly a great American icon, especially since he cares so much about the unique aspects of the natural and human heritage that is fast being eroded by corporate greed and thoughtlessness.

Okay, caught the last few minutes this time around and heard him finish his thoughts on Iraq and the vicious terminology that has entered our lexicon. I share his hope that this is a moment in time that we can get past. As for being 81, all I can say is I am unpacking the new exercise bike and not getting off until sometime in 2009. :-)

What a a fascinating and sexy man. The video cuts off early - I hope you fix it as I was transfixed. Truly.

The edit of the interview is poor--it's choppy right at the point where Matthiessen is identifying and describing the important unifying themes in his life's work--themes that are a huge part of the trilogy.
I would love to see the unedited version of this interview some day.

He was elegiac about the death of our stature around the world. He's a diminishing breed supplanted by venal whores, K-street corruption, M-I-O complex exploiters, financial service wise-guys peddling crap and subprime loans and predatory credit cards, egregious greed corroding and corrosive rotting our once grand system from inside out. Other than that America, how did you like your abbreviated time at the center?
