Justin (..3 comments down), I hope you really do get to review the clip of this show you ask to be rebroadcast, for it will improve your recollection of what M. Rose actually said: "It was known there were no operable nuclear weapons held within Iraq, though they may have been undertaking nuclear investigations." The guest did not say that Iraqi's held no WMD's. Questions of war and peace are very difficult, and we need to hold the facts in the clearest of view.

Utterly fascinating - a man with a wonderfully intriguing perspective. I had heard Pitt had made a lot of money on the war and then saw it for the waste it was and helped end it. I look forward to reading this book very much.

I believe you are all missing the most important point that was made in this show. Sir. Rose stated clearly and was asked to repeat and state again that, It was known, without a shadow of a doubt that Iraq had No, ir repeat No wepons of mass distruction. This fact was known by the UN and Britton yet we here in the US were told that they did. This obviously was a blatent act of deceit to the american people. Help bring this fact to the press and the public. Can we get that clip played on national news, Fox,CNN, ABC

Last night, Michael Rose joined fellow Brit Phillipe Sands in decrying American efforts in the world. I am not as well educated as these gentlemen, but after hearing their proclamations and reading responses here and elsewhere I have to wonder: Why is it so few people see any chance of anything succeeding in today's world?

Michael Rose said Sunni/Shia peace can NOT come anytime soon, for "We must remember it took the United Kingdom itself several centuries to end the feudal wars!" But hasn't the world changed quite a bit since then? Maybe too much "Looking Backward" is a fault here. Iraq, and bombs, and 10 new nuclear seekers, ..and airplanes, and internet, and a coming scarcity of oil has required us to "fast track" a number of our utopian dreams.

And I am sorry, but with 100,000 or more at risk now in the earthquake rubble in China, ..where is that (last week's) genteel caring over the sanctity of Tibet sovereignty?

Again, I apologize for that point, but I hope it suggests that life itself is 'nasty and brutish'. We must still do what we can to protect progress, and keep ourselves alive. For America after 9/11, that means a fight.

Let us always accept peace and progress, but also remember that rejecting war means stopping the advance of others against us.

And I absolutely believe that success is possible!

I'll await Mr. Kagan's view on this "Dangerous World" (sic) tonight.

Thank you for the insight. Bob is right about the dollar. All countries buy oil with the U.S. dollar. We use to use gold for trade till the early 70's. You can bet the big money people are creating just what they want. Just what this is yet to be seen. I would say to futher this New World Order the Bush family has been preaching. History has a way of repeating itself. There has always been a thirst for total control of the people. Just look at how many rights we have lost since 9/11. All this war stuff, Iran stuff, WMD STUFF, Homeland Sec. stuff, Oil stuff.... WAKE UP FOLKS! It's called....

PROPAGANDA!!! Really the wake up call is to late. WE ARE BROKE!!!! THOUSAND DOLLARS A SECOND FOR THE WAR... ONE MILLION DOLLARS A SECOND FOR THE DEFICIT. But no money to teach your child. Soc. Sec. will be gone by early next year. And to beat all a super bug is about to appear... seniors will die by the thousands. Nothing new here, study your history. The powers in control now the history. This discussion with Gen. Sir Michael Rose - and the earlier discussion with Jeremy Greenstock - provided more information about the realities of the mess in the Mideast than I have received in nearly 8 years! I thank you Charlie, and these wonderfully honest and studied gentlemen. It is too bad that it will take this country - and our allies - more than twice that length of time to recover from the disaster President Bush has created, if in fact we ever do. I blame myself as well; I voted for him - twice!

Thank you Charlie for the Michael Rose interview. It's not often I hear comments like his that seem to encompass the realities of the situations in the Middle East as well as the the mistaken involvements of the U.S. and Britain. At times I may hear bits and pieces of his opinions but seldom a comprehensive understanding as he exhibited. I hope many digest what he said. I feel there is much to learn from him. Again, thanks.

Dear Richard the retired citizen.

All oil is bought with U.S. Dollars.Every country must buy oil in dollars. The dollar is worthless. When the OPEC nations are paid in worthless U.S. script they must counter this problem when they exchange these dollars on the global currency markets, by setting a much higher price point for their oil. If the dollar were strong like the euro, or Pound oil would be considerably cheaper.

For other countries to purchase oil in dollars, they must first purchase dollars from the U.S. in the form of useless Treasury Bills that pay 2% per annum. This makes it very easy for the U.S. to finance a steep deficit, at low interest rates. But we are all the poorer for it.

Retired Gen. Michael Rose is well studied and has a valuable historical perspective on Iraq and the ME. I must get his book. I am angered and appalled that individuals like him are disregarded when weighty issues are at hand and decisions made.

Thinking people want to know.

If William Shakespeare were alive today and still writing heâ??d surely revise the line that says; â??Thereâ??s something rotten in Denmark.â?? Catchier and more relevant, heâ??d be writing, â??Something is rotten in Saudi Arabia, or something is rotten in the petroleum industry, or maybe even our Government.

(â?¦which is supposed to be operating for the people, of the people, and by the people,)

Many people and I, donâ??t buy the simple argument that supply and demand explains the rising cost of petroleum. Thereâ??s got be more to it. Oil profits since George Bush Jr. has been President is around $600 billion dollars and rising every day (see L.V. Review Journal article of 5-14-08) We are told oil was selling for the low $30.00â??s per barrel before the current Iraqi war and now is selling at around $125.00 per barrel.

(We know Bush and Cheney are oil people. Do we know if they are benefiting personally from this gouge?) (Does this explain why our Government is not protecting us?) (Is there really a smoke filled back room someplace where they decide to use inflation to rob us blind, castrate us and render us powerless?)

Somebody is gaming us, the people and rigging this system. People just donâ??t pay 4 times the price for a commodity unless there is a near guaranteed profit for doing so. I think it would be interesting to see exactly â??by name,â?? who are these speculator-oil buyers and how much oil are they buying? And for what money? And where do they store it, and with â??where, when and howâ?? kinds of information; like how much profit can a speculator make?

Iâ??d like somebody trustworthy to verify there are no scams, kickbacks, rebates or some other kind of Shenanigan being perpetrated by the oil countries and the oil companies.

And as you contemplate these things, think of this. By our two â??Gulf Warâ?? military actions, We saved the Crown, the Kingdom and possibly the actual lives of the ruling class of Saudi Arabia. Why are they not beholding to us? Why canâ??t (or wonâ??t) they pump out enough surplus oil to ruin it for the speculators in this crazy run up of prices? And why havenâ??t our government called in the markers these Arabs owe us?

His assertion that the Sunni's will ultimately prevail does not compute if the Shia are the majority and Shia Iran next door. Agree totally that their penchant for sectarian strife will continue at a simmering level forever. Disengaging from Irag in xx years or immediately, will present the same problems. Delay will merely exacerbate the extant probems. Worrying about stability is fatuous. They didn't have it before and their culture has never lent itself to such. Tribalism and religious fanaticism has prevailed for centuries and will continue. It's in their DNA.

That has to be chalked up in part to hubris, in part to LBJ-style compassion, in part to oil, and to long-standing resentment of the elder Bush's policy among many in the far right. I don't think they ever believed Irag a threat. But I think a considerable amount of blame has to placed on all the NATO allies who did not, when they knew the folly of it, and knew that Bush would not be deterred, did not join in an occupation force large enough to do the job. And I think they are still to be faulted for that. I do not know about his thesis that Iran would not become more involved if we left. Certainly there will be a civil war regardless.
