I don't know why Charlie Rose even bothers to have guests. He obviously knows their subject better and can read minds. How ironic that this conversation is about listening, which Charlie couldn't do if his life depended on it. He has wonderful guests, but half the time I have to turn off the TV because I can't stand Charlie's interruptions. Is his ego so fragile that he has to prove how smart he is? Does no one tell him to shut up?!!! He'll ask a question and then answer it, talking over his subject's response. He is rude, annoying and one of the most egomaniacal interviwers I've ever seen. Charlie NEEDS therapy to explore WHY, at his advanced age he's still trying to prove he's the smartest boy in the room. Pathetic.

Whenever Gabriel Byrne does an interview, we're in for a treat! He never disappoints. With tremendous charm, erudition, thoughtfulness, soulfulness, insight and transparency, Gabriel Byrne is simply delightful. I enjoyed this interview as much as Charlie Rose, who seemed to cherish a conversation with an exciting party guest. Kudos. Please bring him on again without another seven year gap. Thanks a bunch and Bravo!

I totally agree with those below who point out that Charlie INTERRUPTS his guests continuously. It is VERY IRRITATING. Actually, Charlie is becoming just about as irritating as Oprah who REGULARLY INTERRUPTS her guests. One of Oprah's guests should just tell her: DO YOU EVER SHUT THE %$#@ UP AND LISTEN?? Charlie is NOT YET at the point where one of his guests should tell HIM that...but he's approaching that point and he SHOULD actually WATCH ONE OF HIS OWN INTERVIEWS so that he can avoid falling into the Oprah pitfall. Oh yeah...and Charlie? going into therapy WOULD help! :-)

Hmmm...addicted to IN TREATMENT?
HBO should do a follow up reality show about IN TREATMENT viewers who have become addicted to the show and its characters. How about putting a dozen of these viewers in a BIG-BROTHER type house along with a female and a male psychotherapist. The addicts could spend part of their days watching re-runs of IN TREATMENT by themselves or in groups of varying sizes and then discuss what they've watched with their fellow addicts. The 24 hr cameras could show us all how these addicted viewers respond to each other and to the live-in psychotherapists who would hold individual and group therapy sessions. Of course, the two therapists would also have their own therapists with whom they would discuss how this whole process affects them. All of this would be caught on camera, edited, and then broadcast with a title like: In Treatment Addicts In Treatment. :-)

What a great interview with Gabriel Byrne. Having recently become addicated to "In Treatment" I thought it was fascinating to watch Mr. Bryne somewhat reveal himself. I'm not sure what I can add that hasn't already been stated here but I can only hope that we see these two interesting and articulate men sit down and talk/listen again. Only one problem......I wish it had been longer!

I have always loved Gabriel Byrne. The interview was very enlightening and a joy to watch. I have always thought that he took on roles that somehow show the analytical and psychological side of him. He has always done the hand thing when he has to think about something and it only makes sense to put him in the role in In Treatment. I love the show and hope it comes back. There is just something about him that just makes you want him and to have long discussions with him at the same time. No matter how old he gets he still attracts my attention. He's like a fine wine-he just gets better with time.

I feel the interview with Gabriel Byrne and Charlie Rose was one of the finest moments of television interviewing ever. It challenged me, informed me, and delighted me. Both Mr. Byrne and Mr. Rose are so articulate and attractive that if the interview had been six hours, I'd have been ecstatic. I am glad that Mr. Rose interviews Mr. Byrne with some regularity and feel that they have developed an ease with one another and respect that hint of friendship. They are thoughtful and intelligent men who represent their professions admirably. May I please vote here for not only a second season of "In Treatment" but many, many seasons - that series was the best quality television I have ever seen, including the acting (most particularly Mr. Byrne), writing, and directing. I am totally addicted to the show and am experiencing serious withdrawals now that the first season has ended. Please, Mr. Rose, have your therapy show soon to help us poor sufferers.

Great interview -- more like a conversation or even lecture! Gabriel Byrne is one of my favorite actors. Given his background as a teacher and Irish sensibilities, he is thoughtful and a joy to listen to. And it doesn't hurt that he is STILL easy on the eyes! (:

charlie rose interrupts a lot (but it keeps things flowing). and gabriel byrne, when charlie talked at length near the end of the interview, didn't listen as well as his character paul does...but instead, kept interjecting uh-huh, right, uh-huh etc. (a LOT)... interesting also that neither of them seemed to be tuned into the fact that charlie's show (and others like it) are ALSO dialogue one on one. ...I hope gabriel does go into therapy; i was struck by how dimensions of humanness and feelingfulness seemed more present in him when he was acting as paul...he's more closed, in person (though just as charming as I've always found him).

I too get annoyed when Charlie interrupts his guests. However, when Charlie inserts his opinions, it changes the show from being an interview, into a conversation among peers.
And I wonder, perhaps that sometimes actually helps the guest to open up more -- because Charlie is sharing some of himself too. He wants his guests to feel comradery with him, as if they both are pursuing similar goals in life and their careers.
(Too often than not however, it seems like Charlie merely wants to portray himself as important as his guests. His ego gets the best of him. He could be more tactful about how he inserts himself into the conversation. Still, his show is perhaps the best of its kind on TV or radio, with Terry Gross' Fresh Air on NPR a close second.)

Love Gabriel Byrne. Love Charlie Rose. However, I do wish Charlie would listen more while the guest is speaking. Constantly interjecting his own thoughts is annoying, sometimes rude and very distracting for the audience. Having said that, I will continue watching.
Lowell 03/16/2008 09:33 PM Report
How ironic that one of the more interesting topics discussed by Byrne was the great value and the challenge of listening intently. For a few minutes there Rose allowed him to speak without interruption. I was pleasantly surprised. But shortly thereafter, true to for, Rose proved once again to be a terrible listener; far more interested in hearing the sound of his own voice. He frequently finishes the subject's sentences assuming he knows what that person is about to say - childishly needing to be the one to say it first. How arrogant and boring. Then, rather than wait for the subject to finish a thought, he will interrupt to share his opinion, as though we are more interested in his thoughts than the subject's. The frequent, rude interruptions in mid-sentence infuriate me. He actually cuts me off from learning what his subjects have to contribute. I have to stop watching long before the show is over. Why in the world do so many of you think so highly of someone who will not allow top notch, fascinating guests get and keep the spotlight? I cannot be the first person to share this frustration.
Celeste 03/13/2008 04:43 PM Report
Thank you to Charlie and Gabriel for sharing that conversation with us! The topics covered took great personal and emotional courage to address, particularly for those in the public eye.
I was so hoping that Mr. Byrne wouldn't have a cynical or sarcastic view toward therapy. I believe that the character Mr. Byrne plays cares for his patients and if it had all been an acting farse then I would have felt somewhat bamboozled. But on the contrary it has helped to restore my faith in mankind. How wonderfully refreshing that these men have shown that men can be tender and feel emotions deeply yet not lose one iota of respect among men and even increase their favor among women!
Thank you and well done!

I did not see the interview. I hope I can see/read the dialogue. I have watched In Treatment since the beginning. I love the show. I was in treatment myself for 10 years. Believe me I needed all 10 years. As far as some of the comments about the topic, especially Kay Henneberry's, I don't know if Freud was daft or not, but psychotherapists are taught that some of Freuds theory's/ pronouncements were wrong. Being a Catholic I can attest to the fact that Confession is somewhat like therapy and you feel a sense of relief afterwards. But unless your priest is also a therapist (yes, there are some) you will not get the same benefit that you would get from an actual therapist.
Apart from that, I am, and have been for years, a fan of Charlie's. I tune in, if I am able, every night to see who he is interviewing. I don't rely on what is published in case it changes because of the day's events. Such was the case when Bill Buckley died. If I had missed it that night I would have been heart broken. The only time I do not continue to listen is if the topic is one of Charlie's favorites...sports. I am not a follower of any sport so I look for other stimulation, something good to read.
I do have a copy of a previous show that Charlie did on Freud years ago (? 1999) in connection with a showing at the Jewish Museum. It was a panel discussion with four or five men/women.
Charlie Rose is my means of keeping abreast of current affairs. If something is important I know I can count on Charlie to have a show on it as soon as possible.
Keep up the good work, Charlie. We need more people like you.

as a regular view of the CHARLIE ROSE show, it was a very interesting experience to see the Gabriel Byrne interview. it was sort of like watching two blind men grope around for the light switch -- two people who haven't been in therapy talk about therapy. it seemed like in addition to at times ridiculing people (like their famous director friend) who has been in long-term therapy, that neither Rose nor Byrne have a very good handle on what therapy is, or understand its value. sort of bizarre to see two obviously intelligent men display such ignorant perspectives and defensiveness.

Yes we women are lucky to be women. I really was touched when the conversation turned to the necessity for listening and that the shamans and healers are those who take on the troubles and pains of others through the process of listening. This is a breakthrough for so many people in our world who are self absorbed and overly concerned with personal agenda. The ultimate goal is still love, compassion and empathy and this interview touched on those realizations beautifully because the two men at the table embodied those qualities! Not only that, but they both accomplished a conversation that allowed them both to show a small bit of vulnerability, sensitivity and receptivity, without sacificing their masculinity one bit. Admitting your so-called "reprehensible qualities" is courageous and I perceive that both Charlie and Gabriel portrayed the strength of doing this and like most women, we hope you turn to us to liberate you and help you with your complex internal, emotional lives!

Iwas so in love with him from minute one. And I would like to advise all those who are lining up for therapy thinking this sexy, sensitive, intelligent man is going to open the door, he is not the norm!! This show is going to put therapy back on the radar screen, but ladies don't be fooled, they don't all look or act like Gabriel Byrne. That being said I love this program and after this wonderful interview I am now more impressed and yes more in love. He is so thoughtful and funny and well read and hot. someone once told me that therapists are paid friends. The idea of a good looking man listening soulfully to the minutia of one's dull little life is quite delicious...and exists only on telly, I think. Excellent discussion and topic. It actually made me very aware that your set design is devoid of any extraneous sensory stimulation, focusing singularly on complex conversation. Oddly, just yesterday, I finished Norman Doidgeâ??s book on neuroplasticity . One chapter discusses psychoanalysis and how a good therapist can actually aid a patient in changing the brain mapping and therefore the brains habitual physical and emotional responses â??whether the problem stems from repressed memory, concurrent firing of brain sectors resulting in OCD etc. Things like autism can also be treated , not by analysis, but through specific brain stimulation exercises to change how the brain works.
And regarding your attention span discussion , Doidge talks about the â??orienting responseâ?? (the one that a slight peripheral movement or sound would alert a hunter that prey is near) and that modern media activates that response which interrupts you and lowers your heart rate so you can pay attention and get your bearings. That interruption occurs so often with cuts, edits, zooms, pans, crawlers, sudden noises etc., that we acquire a taste for it and find slower change boring. He points out that is why our eyes track to a TV, even when we are engaged in serious, intimate conversation. He also says that professors report that reading, complex conversation and lectures are becoming more difficult for students.
Neuroplasticity would be a great show topic.

The program last night touched on deep human issues. Some of the things said by Grabriel have been a belief of mine for years. I liked his comment about the loss of the shaman or sage by our society. As a nurse, I have found that all people have their story...the story of their life journey. Those stories are rich in data. I find that many in society are quick to judge people and thus those stories are hidden, rather than told. I believe therapy is a safe milieu for those stories to be heard. If untold, those stories are "stuffed" and take on a form similar to attempting to keep dogs locked in a basement...sooner or later they want out. They can present as unhealthy behaviors and disease.
Our world becomes more impersonal via our technology. I see our young people text messaging others and see this form of communication unemotional and impersonal. Counseling is one way to get back to personal, vulnerable communications-something crucial for human intimacy.
I look forward to Charlie's plan to have a panel to discuss mental health issues. I have been saying for years that this country needs a massive mental health movement. I believe the mental health movement would need to address more than just issues of the mind, but also of the soul. Our world has become very unsoulful. I believe good counselors address not only cognitive therapy issues but also issues of the soul.
Thanks Charlie for your great show and all the wonderful, enlightening guests and topics.
