Description

Andrew Kuo is an artist who lives and works in New York City. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Rhode Island School of Design in 1999. He had his first solo exhibition in New York in 2001, and since then has had several other solo and group exhibitions both in the U.S and abroad. His most recent solo exhibition, All Over Again was on display at The 33 Bond Gallery in Manhattan from October 2007 to January 2008. Kuo's obsessive charts analyzing musical events have been featured in the New York Times' music section for the last several months. His diagrams represent his own sets of quirky data in various arrangements of color and pattern.

      Great interview and great, thoughtful artist. In response to "Josh" (below) I would like to say that your comments come across as mean-spirited and ignorant. It is unbelievably pretentious to tell an artist what he or she should make work about or how they should spend their time. Artists should make work about whatever they feel like making work about. Last time I checked there was no check list for what art can and cannot be made about. Keep up the great work Andrew!

      Great to hear an honest artist who is not pretentious. Being a struggling artist in the midwest nice to know thier are artist in the east who really care and have personel feelings of the people around them.

      I find this man insufferable. His chart on "summer festivals" make him seem like an ignorant snob, not the clever artist he so clearly wants to be.

      He even stoops to mock K'naan, an artist whose work to educate the world on Somalian tensions far eclipse anything Kuo will ever accomplish.

      Your piece in the Times on festivals was so negative I got to a point where I wondered why you would write it... dont bash something you obviously dont get... many things in your piece that were negative for you arent for other people. And how can you not like Talib Kweli?

      I hate your charts and I think that people who like them are fools, along with the Times editors who agree to put your work online and in print. Stop over analyzing things and start accepting and enjoying them. Get out of the house. Have an adventure. Make art about that. Also Death is inevitable so accept that too. It's irrational to be afraid of death if you know that it is going to happen. Please don't be a cry baby about this post.

      I enjoyed seeing Andrew at a recent AIGA lecture. Tongue in cheek art aside (his work is clever, but not only clever), the honesty of this guy's work (he's a toungue in cheek kinda guy) is inspiring and refreshing.

      This is great. I saw the show and was amazed at how personal and revealing it was. Now to hear how Andrew Kuo is sensitive to criticism, it really shows the understated boldness in this work, which I enjoyed thouroughly. Thanks.
