I don't really understand the issue of the whether his grandparents were legal or not. As he has indicated clearly, at the time when they arrived, the immigration laws were quite different and the borders were far more open. Are we questioning his grandparentâ??s legal status because he is of Mexican descent? Why is this question not asked of every politician? There were many Europeans who rushed to the US without getting their paperwork sorted out first.

Mark- I see, you too, are a moral relativist, mismo Antonio. I am no prig....but explain philandering as it relates to liking sex? Your argument is: illicit, deceitful affair = adults like sex?? Goofy. I'm afraid Mark's point re character is lost on you.

    3. Mark  02/26/2008 03:54 AM Report

Don, you need to figure out why you're so bothered by the mayor's affair. Guess what... Adults like to have sex. Get over it.

I swear if Clinton wins I'm voting Nader!!!

    5. Josefa  02/23/2008 12:07 PM Report

I am voting for Hillary. I need something more than Oprah or words from a candidate. Obama is an empty bag of words which will do nothing for the Hispanic community. A rockstar for a president? Don't think so, give me proof. Give the job to the person who has the most experience and qualifications for the job. And that is Hillary Clinton.

Latinos Unidos para Hillary Clinton. Arriba!

So did Antonio's father come from Mexico, or did Antonio's grandma give birth to Antonio's dad in Mexico? I think the Mayor was lying. Also, how in this over-saturated illegal Immigrant debate do you not ask your father whether or not he crossed the border legally or otherwise? I don't get it... someone please explain?? Is the mayor a 2nd generation American or is he 1st?? Did his dad come to this country legally or illegally?? Weird, it appears the mayor is BIASED... he has an agenda. Charlie didn't catch that, or maybe he let him slide. He's dead wrong on illegal immigration.

    8. Louis  02/22/2008 09:24 PM Report

I just want to say that this L.A Mayor is out to lunch when it comes to the issue of illegal-immigration. I am a hispanic-American and i live in Los Angeles. I prefer to speak English.

I recently got laid off and immediately went to look for a new job. I found a recycling center in Glendale that had just been open for a couple of months. I asked if they were hiring, and none of the workers that I asked spoke any English. I spoke with the manager and she also had a very difficult time communicating with me. To make a long story short. Illegal immigrants are taking legal immigrants and American citizen's jobs. What is going on? Unemployment is HIGH, and we're having to compete with these people. Wages are down...Mexicans are killing blacks, blacks killing Mexicans and this guy is having an affair with the the news anchor from TELEMUNDO.

Antonio is so BIASED, he needs to operate on this side f the border. I will never vote for this guy when he decides to run for Governor.

Him and al the racists like Fabian Nunez and the entire "RAZA" organization are a bunch of nationalist Mexicans that are only interested in ruining this country.

I find Antonio to be such an inarticulate and redundant official.

His friend-ship with Sen. Edwards?? Political correctness will sink us all one day. Somebody please get this guy out of office. When will stop caring about what racial group is voting for who, and when will we start caring for important things like education, which by the way L.A's children are highly affected by the in-flux of illegal kids that keep popping up all over the place. And what about illegals that come to this country and give birth to their kids here just so that they can remain in the country. Where's the ethics in that. Who will feed all these kids, Antonio's dreams perhaps. Man, I really dislike our mayor. He makes me so angry. Sorry for the rant. I hope everyone sees what a condescending, ignorant biased politician we're electing. Antonio does not represent all Hispanics, only Mexicans. Mark my words. One more thing, it wasn't until his second term that he realized we had a gang problem. Duh- let's try reducing illegal immigration. hiring more cops will not cure the problem.

    9. LonewackoDotCom  02/22/2008 03:52 AM Report

Sorry, I didn't watch it, but given Charlie Rose's lightweight nature I doubt whether he asked Villaraigosa about his questionable past. That includes congratulating a foreign leader on helping block a bill approved by the majority of voters, being a leader in a racial separatist group, and even more. I provided some background here: tinyurl.com/3476ep

For the short version, see what Villaraigosa said about illegal aliens here: youtube.com/watch?v=3jwqQ8DtlPQ

    10. Observer  02/22/2008 12:53 AM Report

Mayor Villaraigosa is highly mistaken when he says the Latino votes for Senator Hillary Clinton is not due to color. The reason is due to competition for the same economic scale in the American society, which is fighting for the higher scale at the bottom level. African-Americans resent Latinos for having to bring down the wages and their tolerance to more employer abuse, essentially making it difficult for rich whites to deal with African-Americans while the choice between a little lighter complexion with yes to everything and a typical American psychology espousing person. That robs opportunity from African-Americans to the Latinos with lower wages higher tolerance to abuse, and accept lower standard of work conditions. Those differences are psychological; they cannot be explained in political terms. If one wants to describe them in political terms, then simply say that Latinos cheapen human dignity, and rich people of any race do not like to deal with humans that have dignity. Essentially it comes down to economics, when raking more profit is compared to less profit then the money speaks for itself. If I am to hire people for $5/hr with no EI premiums and no insurance compared to paying $9 or $10/hr with EI premiums, insurances for the workforce and higher working conditions, then I prefer to higher the cheaper employee with the same or better service for my dollar. If I higher ten of those illegal immigrants with low rate/hr, then it would essentially mean saving over $200 a day, with the money I save I can have extended vacations with the whole family and perhaps expand and double my business in few years time. That is the core difference between African-Americans and Latinos. As a result Latinos choose White over Black at anytime of the day. Instead of resolving the problems and core difference, rather than fight for the crams of the real economy.

mayor v. is a terrible mayor with no respect for latina women.

    12. William B.  02/21/2008 04:42 PM Report

It has become apparent that voters care more about how a politician will effect their own personal lives (or pocket books) rather than how a politician cheats a spouse or best friend.

Consider how many Mayors have had affairs and the voters return them to office: Cisneros (San Antonio), Giuliani (New York), Newsom (San Francisco), Villaraigosa (Los Angeles) just to name a few.

    13. Carol J  02/21/2008 01:30 PM Report

For Dave Waterbury, the Mayor said his grandfather came here in 1903, and then he said they raised 2 daughters. He was referring to his maternal grandfather. He also stated that his mother sent for his father and they were married 5 years. Sometimes to have to watch the show a couple of times, especially if a person lowers their voice.

    14. Carol J  02/21/2008 09:23 AM Report

I say Charlie Rose is for Mayor Bloomberg for president, if Mayor Bloomberg can't be president, Charlie Rose will nominate him for Vice-President. Has anyone other than myself heard the number of times Charlie has thrown Mayor Bloomberg's name in a conversation? A better idea lets' write in Charles P. Rose for President of the United States!!!!!!!!!!!!

You Caught Villaraigosa in a LIE on the air!

With Antonio Villaraigosa, it appears you caught him in a big lie, and you either didn't spot it, or politely "let him slide" on the air.

Antonio said his grandfather came to the USA in 1902 or 03 and had 2 children .

Later, he said his father came to the USA in the Fifties.

Those two statements don't add up.

Mayor "Raigosa" says make illegal immigrants legal.... I say indefensible. The past three/four years in LA have welcomed a wildly accelerated influx of new latino immigrants. they work openly (fraudulently)in most major retail stores, etc.and with impunity. LAPD has heavy-duty blinders on when a non-citizen breaks the law here; driving etc.

He narcissistically disrespected his wife and traded-up for a new young lolly. He's misguided and shallow. Open borders- bad idea, Mayor! To quote you "when people break the law they should be arrested". I agree.

I am a 3rd generation Mexican-American/Native American. My family is originally from East Los Angeles. We are supporting Barack Obama.

I live in a community in East Los Angeles county. We are predominatly Hispanic in this portion of L.A. county. I walk into my parish

Catholic Church and on either side of the entrance are pictures of all the young men and women serving proudly in Irag and Afganistan. We personally know young men serving. My children are 23 and 24 years of age. It is primarily their peers that are serving. Because of the ethnic compostion of our community the recruiters are extremely busy in our area. When my son was graduating from High School the miltary recruiters did not leave us alone. How can you support a candidate that voted for this horrible war? Save your rhetoric about how she was giving the president the benefit of the doubt. Access the Library of Congress and read the Bill. She was a Washington insider and knew what the agenda of the Neo-Cons was. It was the politically expedient thing to do. Mr Obama had the courage to stand up for his convictions even though it could have lost him his election. His foresight speaks to his ability to be a true LEADER. I will be working the phone banks to reach out to the Latinos in Texas to support Barack Obama!

    18. sam madino  02/21/2008 03:08 AM Report

Timely interview to bring in latino support for Hillary before the Texas election. Let's see we've had Mike Helprin a couple of times who use the "P" word against Obama, Doris Kearns Goodwin who urges Hillary with advice from your show, and now we have one her campaign managers. Is Charlie pro Hillary? It's okay, it's his show, but you be the judge.

    19. Don  02/21/2008 01:45 AM Report

CHARACTER: When are we, as voters-people-Americans going to demand that our major politicians have stand up character. Is it any surprise that this guy is backing Clinton when he can't keep his fly zipped? Can't these guys keep their pants on while the are in office? If they can't, do NOT get married! I think one of the big problems with politicians today is lack of CHARACTER, and this screwing around goes to the heart of it, and those people who think that is does not matter are shortsighted and fooling themselves. Step up and be ABOVE reproach, don't be so damn selfish. Where are all the Harry S. Truman's and George McGovern's? I want CHARACTER BACK in politics!
