This was an excellent show! Willie Brown was very insightful in his analysis. I think some people must have been confused about his statement that he could not have been successful in the South. He was not saying that Black politicians in general could not be successful, only that he could not have been as successful. And I agree. He is far too flamboyant and brazen in his rhetoric. I cannot wait to get his new book. Thanks, Charlie. You hit another homerun out of the park.

Willie Brown made me want to puke when he said that democrats have no problem with blacks, but Americans (Independents and Republicans) do.

Here we have a black man with a real change to be the next President meanwhile a hero almost of the democrat party, The Clintons are trying to not just beat him but destroy him.

It is clear that democrats see race while republicans see the content of ones character. My favorite Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas has more character than the entire democrat party.

    4. Mary G.Overton  02/14/2008 04:09 AM Report

I enjoyed the conversation, as normally I do with your guests, but I was shocked by Willie Brown's naivity, his excitment about the Obama's wave.

Do any one is goign to come and yell'THE EMPEROR IS NACKED"?

The fact is,and I donot want to hurt anyone feelings or pick thedream bubble, Whites are running after the senator, because is is not a Black American, he is not slave's grandson,he has not the anger that my children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews ,have. He most likely has not gone for many of the experiences that my children, nices, nephews, grand chidlren went and are going. He is not perceived by White America as a Black American, so White American, independents, democrats, republicans, could allow themselves to vote for him, because they are not afraid that what White America has in its conscience would come tochase White America.

He has not memmory of slavery, he has not that stored in his genes, in his DNA, so they look at him as an Exotic.

Black Americans are following him as victims of one of the many Aamerican myths. Slavery was made possible by Africans and Arabs, for long time the ships stood away from shore and Europeans did not go inside the African continent, were Africans, head of tribes, or whole tribes, who sold their own people or their enemies. They took their own people to the shore, where they sold them to the Europeans. Others were made prisioners by the Arabs who from the north and the east went through tribel sites and captured the young and the women and sold them to the boats. There is a documentals called 'DRUMS".

So,if overnight senator Obama would became an authentic Black Americna, with family roots in South Caroline Whites would do about him what they did about Jessie Jackson.

Yung people rushed to Obama as they rush after American Idol,or any of those programs, They just had been programmed to that type of activities that keep them from thinking. Obama said nothing and everybody is happy, because they have not to think about anything.

I know that it would be very nice to think that over night White America had forgotten its racism. No, it did not happen. They are following what they consider an Exotic African, no a Black American.

Sorry, The Emperor is naked. Nothing we could do about that.

I truly enjoyed the show with Willie Brown.

The show was informative and gave a good political lesson.

It is nice to know that African Americans who are articulate, competent and qualified can rise to the top. Those who were dissapointed in Charlie or his guest "bias" towards Obama miss the sheer essence of his story, also that of Obamas which is evolving right before our eyes.

We are all biased one way or the other Journalists included. Charlie is still at the top any day!

Mr. Rose I' m Suprised that you did not pick up on the fact that Mr. Brown so causally forgot to leave out the most important black hisory political leader of our time and especially during the controversial 60's and 70's era.

As Mr Brown spoke about what he did in 1964, 1968 and then 1972, he failed to mention that one of our most admired ICONS in american/ world politics Shirley Chisolm was gathering california delegates during her Campanign run for president of these united states in 1972, The first African American and Woman to be so successful to run and gather delegates, the countries First Black Congress woman mand world history as she broke all barriers and set the pathe for others to follow, Mr. brown forgot to mention her groudbreaking and landmark democratic campaign.

Since he failed to do it...let me give you the facts since Mr. willie Brown has only given you fiction.

Let introduce you to the woman who changed america forever..in the context of the 2008 election, although John Edward has suspended his campaign.

Not only MLK...TheBlack Woman Who Changed America forever, The 2008 Candidates must recognize who the real leader of Political Change, Race and Gender is in America.

      From: www.factxchange.com

THE UNDENIABLE POLITICAL-LEADERSHIP OF SHIRLEY CHISHOLM

Follow the Chisholm Trail: The current (Democratic) Candidates lack the stage presence, articulate, and powerful electrifying performance of true Leaders such as Shirley Chisholm.

The original change candidate has already made history but the American press and political news media/shows seems to be in denial or non-recognition of the history of this - our American country.

In the 70's Shirley Chisholm founded the new America... which the media is trying to deny or destroy...

The similarities of Vietnam and Iraq and the Nixon era politics and Bush era politics and the politics of Black America cannot be denied... and therefore the founder of the Change Campaign of Shirley Chisholm (and democratic nominee George McGovern) cannot be neglected.

A Country that cannot build upon its past cannot construct a future.

In the memory and honor of Shirley Chisholm's Groundbreaking and Landmark Campaign for Change, and as the 1972 Chisholm trail - Presidential Campaign - trail-blazed the path through-out this country for others such as Jesse Jackson and Barack Obama.

I hope to set the record straight by establishing that the foundation, founder and catalyst for change is and was the 1st black/woman presidential candidate Shirley Chisholm, and now hope that Barack Obama carries on the baton that has been passed to him for change in this country as well.

John Edwards and Hillary Clinton also share this responsibility which Shirley Chisholm has made for them.

Barack Obama, John Edwards and Hillary Clinton are all good candidates but the person who stands out above all of them is Shirley Chisholm's and her electrifying and groundbreaking campaign of 1972 when Richard Nixon ran on the republican ticket and George McGovern was the democratic nominee...and Shirley Chisholm was the candidate and catalyst for CHANGE IN AMERICA as SHE CHANGED AMERICAN HISTORY and the future course of the country.

She is the model for all of the other candidates to emulate or give tribute.

The question of black leadership still exists, so far the question is if black/ african-americans are going to be voting for Hillary Clinton, wife of the first president (accepted as being Black) or Barack Obama - a black candidate who's parents are racially different Kenyan-African/black and white American woman from Kansas.

but as we all know curly hair and light of dark complexion means that your a black man and your are treated or perceived negatively by American society from your childhood through becoming an adult and the worse as you advance into your career/ or you suffer from past facial tactics and biases.

Therefore being black often means you are Black listed often, treated unfairly, mistreated or treated deconstructively while others are often promoted fraudulently or constructively.

Accept if you're promoted for diversity reasons. But in this case all of your struggles and accomplishments are overlooked and you are seen as filling a position not because of your accomplishments but because of the color of your skin.

Which brings us to today's political topic (more or less).

Often times the white/mainstream adopt a black person as their own and treat/promote them so specially that they separate them from the (priorities of the) flock.

This person is often seen as a house (Negro) or (Uncle Tom) someone who has lost all of their cultural and historical values and has become a casualty of the important agenda. (In a few words).

Black Americans are often faced with the challenge of voting for the underdog in political campaigns with the agenda of making a statement to the world or American society.

White people often vote for underdogs but they could be potential winners

Black people often vote for underdogs but they are losers who have no chance of winning or making a statement, in essence nearly useless in American society.

Shirley Chisholm revolutionized America and became a revolutionary woman known around the world as one of the top 10 most important women in the world which dismissed all negative notions of the potential of black America, as she constructed the foundation for a renewed and revolutionized American society.

      TODAY....

Today Barack Obama has been accepted/adopted and popularized by white American media and society far ahead of getting any concrete facts and information of is presidential run.

American society has turned him into somewhat a pop-star instead of a serious political candidate like Shirley Chisholm.

Hillary Clinton is a woman candidate who of course brings the potential of a woman candidate to the presidency of the USA, who naturally brings issues of black America to the presidency because of the shared black America and women's movements together because of the Shirley Chisholm presidential Campaign era of the early-mid. 70's, where she carried the needs of everyone in the country.

      Black AMERICA (is...very Serious)

It would seem that the underdog here is John Edwards who the media has neglected like a potential black candidate, also the media has denied his john Kennedy like characteristics while over promoting Osama's Lincoln similarities which is totally insane.

Shirley Chisholm has created the revolution in America and changed the country from it's racist a male-gender oriented history, and she has created the America we live in today. Not necessarily Martin Luther king who dissevers his credit especially in the south, but the national and world agenda belongs to Shirley Chisholm, at the dawn of our advanced economy in the 70's Shirley Chisholm founded the new America... which the media is trying to destroy... so if the Media is looking for a revolutionary leader it is not Abraham Lincoln but it is Shirley Chisholm, who has created the society we all enjoy Today.

Black people support serious people with a good message for the country, who are often the underdog like John Edwards and as we all know the leader of the pack often trips loses the race, while other move up and pass the front runners like Barack Obama or Hillary.Clinton.

I'm not necessarily promoting john Edwards but I am promoting the ability and opportunities of the underdog.

In the 70's the Country had to be changed and reshaped and Shirley Chisholm as a catalyst for change address all of the issues in order to create a more civilized country.

Today's democratic candidates and the news media must recognize who has addressed change in this country and has made this country into a better place. Today's candidates must learn how to build on the structure that Shirley Chisholm has created and at that point perhaps they would be able to see that they already have a path or trail blazed for them which will take them to the presidency of the United States.

Please see the PowerPoint presentation on Shirley Chisholm's Groundbreaking Presidential run in 1972 when the political issues were about Vietnam War and the progression of black America, women in America and America as a whole nation represented by Shirley Chisholm.

I very much enjoyed the conversation with Willy Brown. It gave me a perspective on the Black American network and its growing influence in America. Mr. Brown may have "sinned" in the past, let he/she without sin throw the first stone. He has done a lot for San Francisco and the Black community in America.

Iâ??m a long time watcher of Charlie, but Iâ??m afraid Iâ??m going to have to turn him off thru the nomination process if not longer. As a Democrat, Iâ??m upset with his obvious support of Obama. Iâ??m not asking him to support Hillary but to be more responsible and neutral. He seems to turn every political discussion into Obama support, including tonight. Willie Brown said he liked both candidates and Charlie after constant intrusion got him to say he was for ObamaI. I also resent the portrayal of all Hillary supporters, by Charlie and others, as blue collar whites, Latinos, older, low income, and Obamaâ??s as young, black, upper income whites, and educated. Iâ??m a woman, a Californian, have a graduate degree and am quite comfortable economically. Ironically, this election seems more about sexism than racism. White guilt, Charlie?

    12. Robin F.  02/12/2008 03:32 AM Report

Watching night after night and seeing Charlie turn every political conversation into an almost exclusive cheerleading event for Barack Obama is disappointing. What happened to journalistic neutrality? I am excited by both Obama and Clinton, but I can't stomach analysis purporting to be neutral that is biased.

    13. Amy  02/12/2008 01:37 AM Report

According to Wikipedia: ..... Brown is [also\ criticized for favoritism to Ms. Carpeneti, the lobbyist with whom he had a child. In 1998 Brown arranged for Carpeneti to obtain a rent-free office in the city-owned Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Between then and 2003, a period that spans the birth of their daughter, Carpeneti was paid at least US$2.33 million by nonprofit groups and political committees controlled by then Mayor Brown and his friends.... Brown deflected this criticism without denying it. In an interview with political scandal columnists, Brown portrayed having a child with a political operative, outside of a committed relationship with the mother, while himself married, as a demonstration of his virility, parenting skills, support for women to choose keeping a child over abortion, and goodwill from his estranged wife.......... Brown was also criticized widely for his 1997 "declaration of war" on San Francisco's Critical Mass bicycle rides... At a July 31st, 1997 press conference, Brown antagonistically referred to Critical Mass cyclists as "little weenies," and implied that bicyclists do not vote or comprise a significant portion of his constituency........... Brown was seen by many as hypocritical and lacking credibility on the issue of enforcing traffic laws against Critical Mass bicyclists since Brown gained a noted reputation for flying through town with a motorcycle escort just to make his meetings on time.............. I could go on....

    14. Southerner in DC  02/12/2008 01:09 AM Report

I very much enjoy your show, and found Mayor Brown's interview interesting. Nevertheless, I have to take issue with you because you let Mayor Brown off the hook for several reckless assertions he made tonight:

      1. He said twice that Obama's race did not matter in the Democratic primary, but would in the general election, when Republicans were voting. His clear implication in both statements was that Democrats don't harbor racial prejudice, but "America" (read, Republicans) do. He of course has no evidence of this, since there has never been an African American in the general election, and you should have pointed that out (as a side note, Maryland Republicans had no trouble electing a black Lieutenant Governor in 2002, but Maryland Democrats would not reelect him in 2006--is that because he was black, or because he was a Republican?). More important, why didn't you ask him why, despite polls showing Obama's lead up to the last day, Obama lost in the California and New Hampshire Democratic primaries? At least 2 well known columnists--Eugene Robinson and Robert Novak--have suggested it is the Bradley factor (Tom not Bill), recalling that polls in Los Angeles when Bradley was running for mayor said that he would win, but then he lost to the white candidate; the implication being that pollsters said they would vote for the black candidate, but did not. There is survey science research on the phenomenon, and it is at least a plausible explanation for Obama's losses in those 2 states. Yet, you didn't even raise it in response to Brown's twice-made assertion that Obama's race wasn't a factor for Democrats.

      2. Mayor Brown said that he could not be as successful in the South as he has been in California. That's an outrageous statement. Just to take a few examples: (a) Atlanta has had ONLY black mayors since 1974: Maynard Jackson, Bill Campbell, Andrew Young, and Shirley Franklin. It's in the South, right? (b) Charleston, SC, practically a living museum of the old South, has had a black, Jewish Chief of Police since 1982--heck, the New York Times ran a story on him today--Reuben Greenberg. Check him out. (c) Even in the supposedly redneck northwest corner of South Carolina, the city of Spartanburg had a black mayor for 8 years (1993-2002), James Talley. And, let's not forget Congressmen like Jim Clyburn and Melvin Watt, who have served for many years. The point is that African Americans can and do succeed in politics in the South--a point so plainly obvious that it was ridiculous for Mayor Brown to suggest otherwise, and infuriating that you let him get away with it.

      3. Finally, you completely let him off the hook in his explanation for why Barack Obama is having so much more success than Jesse Jackson. Brown bascially attributed it to the professionals working for Obama and the Senator's organization. Brown ignored the real point, which is that Obama has transcended the racial politics that Jackson, Sharpton and others made (and continue to make) their trademark. Obama is a candidate that happens to be black, instead of a black candidate. Everyone knows that, and it is why Pres. Clinton took so much flack for trying to portray Obama as just another black candidate.

You're a smart guy, Mr. Rose. I know you caught those statements by the Mayor as much as I did. That's what made me so mad I had to write you about it.

    16. Dani  02/12/2008 12:52 AM Report

Sorry for taking up so much space, so I hope you can appreciate what I have to say which is not being said elsewhere:

      1) It was Hillary that the leaders of Northern Irland recently sought out, to thank her for what she did to bring them together after decades long violent conflict.

2)It was Hillary who broke the ice between India and the US, after decades of chilled relations. I ran an American Company in India in the 70s and can attest to the coolness in the relations.

Yet Obama claims that Hillary is somehow against diplomacy.

This all came out when they were both asked if they would meet w/the world's dictators ON THE FIRST YEAR IN Office.

She said that diplomacy under her would begin with lower level people first and see where it and how it goes...before ever inviting them to the White House.

Obama said he would TRAVEL TO these dictators ON HIS FIRST YEAR!

Looks like pre-machure ejaculation to me!

I support Hillary BECAUSE SHE DOES NUANCE.

And by the way, despite what Gnewt Gangrich may claim credit for...When Bill Clinton entered office he spent the first few months combing through the Budget LINE ITEM BY LINE ITEM asking his Cabinet: "If I cut this who will it effect, go find out."

And whereas the Republicans have destroyed the Agencies of Government Like Fema, Consumer Product Safety...and turned them into Central Headquarters for the Republican party..Obama loses pieces of paper and does not believe that it is his job to manage the beaurocracy!

That it's his job to "set the vision." Hell that's what we had with Bush and Reagan (who slept every afternoon, and confused Movie Plots with History.)

As for the discussion that the SuperDelagates do not represent the popular vote because more of them support Hillary...

WHAT ABOUT THE 800,000 people in Florida that voted for Hillary fair and square.

All the candidates were on the ballots. It was fair and square. You think the people in Florida don't know who they voted for because the 17 year olds (who have not historic perspective and a relatively poor education, who like movie stars) were not screaming in stadiums there?

I was there when Martin Luther King made his "I have a dream" speech and am one of those who marched against Johnson. Boy have I missed Johnson lately.

No wonder Caroline (who was 5 years old) is reminded of her Father's speeches, Her father's speech writer (Ted Sorenson) is working for Obama.

The "Cliton" machine" line by Republican Operatives like Psychological Abuser Chris Mathews and Tim Russert who uses Republican Talking Points and out of context quotes against Democratic frontrunners -- On the night that South Carolina was still voting He was obsessing, obsessing, obsessing that Bill and Hillary are racist.

This is a president who when he left the White House moved his office to 125st. in Harlem.

It's Goebbles all over again (and Ilsa Koch..the Dowds of the world) And the sexism seems to be much deeper than the racism among the 17-29 year old poorly educated! (OOH SO SORRY TO PLAY THE GENDER CARD..oo.

It is remarable how much our Televisions are so

Filled with the Spin of candidates who USE SPIN. But spin is not fact.

It is about people's vulnerability to deceptive advertising about a defective product.

To say that Obama is about change is absurd, Charlie, OBAMA'S CAMPAIGN USES CHANGE AS A SLOGEN! Period. What are you? Brainwashed?

Furthernmore, As someone who measures a candidate's character by the honesty of his or her campaign the Onus is on me to be highly informed.

I have seen every debate on both sides since last April. And about 50 hours of Obama sump speeches and Hillary's style of answering questions.

Obama is the Bush Candidate. He is using

Rove friend Republican Operative Frank Lunz's book called: "It's not what you say but what people Hear" Which in my educated opinion should be called: "It's what you imply and who you implicate with Lies.

He is not uniting. His speeches contain dozens of "they"s with an hour in conjunction with animosity. Then in between he might say: "We need a new kind of politics"

All while refusing to say anything about the Republicans who have trampled on our constitution.

The Republican controlled Media has been acting like a virulent opposition party by consistantly knocking down the Democratic Frontrunner.

Obama is the Bush Candidate. He is running on LIES ABOUT Hillary, Meanwhile all the Talking Heads (who seem not to want to let go of their tax cuts) ARE BUILDING HIM UP so they can knock him down like they did with Dean, and gave the Swiftboat Liars tens of billions

I am very disappointed with you. On a day before Virginia, when Obama's wife is on Larry King, That you did not find the sensitivity and SMARTNESS to Have someone on from a CAMPAIGN THAT DOES NOT USE SPIN.

I AM TERRIFIED IF OBAMA WINS. Terrified.

He has a Situation comedy view of what a CEO does, and what is involved in smart effective diplomacy.
