Description

One of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people in the world in 2008, Alexis Sinduhije is a presidential candidate in Burundi's 2010 Elections. Before announcing his candidacy last month, Sinduhije was one of Burundi's pioneering radio journalists and civic leaders who was awarded the CPJ's 2004 International Press Freedom Award. He is a leading voice for the rule of law in the great lakes region and in Africa as a whole. Already Sinduhije's investigation of ethnic massacres and outspoken public criticisms of the government's hit squads have earned him death threats and two recent assassination attempts.

      Dear Charlie,

I just wanted to let you know that Alexis has been detained without charge in Burundi over his peaceful political activities. The move has been condemned by Human Rights Watch and also, reportedly, the US Embassy in Burundi. There are more details here: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/99269?m=7e3959a1 and here: http://hrw.org/english/docs/2008/11/04/burund20130_txt.htm

Wow! I heard him on the radio and was blown away. How inspiring. If we could take one leaf out of his book this world would be a better place.

He is a second Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.

Good luck for 2010 elections and may the wind be at your back.

I pray that Mr. Sinduhije is successful in his bid for the presidency of Burundi and that he is very careful for his own security. The world needs many more leaders like him, and we need them to stay safe while emancipating their people from corrupt governments. I pray that Mr. Sinduhije gets all the help he needs from the international community.
