At her core, Hillary is cold-hearted as Nixon's ego ... its confounds me that Hillary's experience is a litigious laywer who personally ruined/profited from the women that then Governor Bill groped+.

We as Americans call Hillary "experienced"?

At what besides ruining other women's lives ... helping Walmart export millions of middle-class jobs/businesses to third world countries?

We as Americans call Hillary "patriotic"?

Instead of co-opting, as her husband would have "brilliantly" done, an incredible health care proposal by then Tennessee congressman John Cooper (see David Brooks in the NY Times) or Congressional Quarterly from 1994 ... she brings out the attack machine against a brilliant statesman.

We as Americans call Hillary "ethical" to the highest standard that the Office of the U.S. President demands?

Flash forward to 2008: Hillary brings out the attack machine against a brilliant statesman ...

I wish that Charlie Rose and his guests would speak truth to power just once per show.

That, and if only California could have gotten their voting machines before 12 noon in the precincts that counted ... would Obama have pulled neck-and-neck+?

    2. Pat  02/18/2008 02:40 PM Report

Today, the 2008 primary status for President is more about race than it is about the Presidency.

Was that inevitable in having a woman or a black man run?

It wasn't when Elizabeth Dole ran, and it wasn't when Jesse Jackson ran. But today it is.

Why is anyone's guess, but the question deserves to be asked of why race has co-opted the Presidential election - and the perception is now one where civil rights has become equivalent with the Presidential campaign though it wasn't for Allan Keyes.

When the campaign became more about race than gender, and more about civil rights than the Presidency, John Edwards dropped out, though he made a valiant effort to stay in. No one listened.

So much focus upon civil rights has seemed to place civil rights at the center of the campaign than national rights or national welfare - which is what campaigns have always been about.

Who would have thought that placing a black man on the candidate list would have resulted in this kind of sensationalism as if it was a test of the belief in non-discrimination? Should we have known? Is there that much latent desire to confirm America's commitment to non-discrimination that a black man must be elected President to prove it? Then, why not a woman?

Or, is there something more afoot in the sleazy games that control America's most powerful office?

I LOVE HILLARY. I want to disabuse one of your commentators on the following quote and I paraphrase, "Obama reaches people's hearts, Hillary their heads"

This is absolute rubbish and falls into the Obama camp rhetoric. Hillary has touched my heart. As a woman having grown up with nothing but male Presidents, for the first time, I am moved to say because of Hillary, "my government" not "the government." For 200 years "the government" has been a male bastion of power plays leaving me empty, detached from the workings of government and especially with this past a-hole, I mean President, completely outside of the so called "democratic" political SYSTEM. I mean really, if he had 5 more years, our Democracy, which took 200 years to create, might have been abolished in one fell sweep. How long must we endure a government by men, for men?

I think it would be so beautiful to see what this woman, who has been steeped in politics for most of her adult life, brings to what has become a.... it's impossible to even know what to call it - suffice it to say, it's about men, doing their "business" and using our precious democracy to fill their coffers and prop up their egos with money and power. What a waste of breath it seems to be to say our "government" is for the people, by the people... â??

What do we stand for? I appreciate Obama's "message," but it's wearing thin. You want real change, elect a woman for President. And not just any woman, A woman, who if you listen cares about our country, cares about the people, and wants to work on our behalf to help fulfill our destinies through "the government."

Obama may be a grand eloquent speaker, but I see shades of Bush in his posturing. His peacock posturing and frankly I don't see or hear what difference he will make once he gets into office. I hear a rally call, I see a "leader" whoâ??s a lightning rod for college students and young people, who feel they have someone they can call their own. But they haven't lived in this country for the past 20 years; this is for some of them their 1st or 2nd vote.

I love their enthusiasm, but I fear leaving the fate of our country in the hands of those who are at best idealistic and at worst unrealistic in the "powers that be." In addition, I want to note that all the â??white peopleâ?? I know who are of my generation, 70â??s teenagers, are wealthy Anglo- Saxons who I almost think on some level feel that Obama is the candidate who they feel they will best be able to co-opt and bend to their will through frankly donations. (See David Geffen) He will be their â??buddyâ?? if you will, or in the worst Bush way, become one of their â??cronies.â?? They are not working class people in ANY sense of the word.

To end, I want to let your male, black commentator know and hopes he hears me loud and clear so he never again speak on my behalf in making what to me sees like self-serving remarks. Here this MR. COMMENTATOR:

ITâ??S HILLARY WHO REACHES INTO MY GUTS, MY SOUL, bypassing my "heart,â?? and, I resent him or any other commentator with access to the air waves summing up MY FEELINGS with his or her stamp of given opinion. HE GOT IT WRONG. Itâ??s HILLARY who reaches MY HEART and its MY HEAD that tells me Obama isn't ready to lead MY country back to Democracy. I just wanted to clarify MY SENTIMENTS for the record and if I had the privilege of reaching Charlie Roseâ??s audience, I would try my best to speak for myself and not presume that I spoke for the country.

PS. I also resent anyone using their clout in a given area, be it The Kennedyâ??s or Oprah, to use their audience for Obamaâ??s candidacy. If I wanted a Kennedy, or a Shriver or an Oprah to be my President, I would vote for them and not who they like. Please thatâ??s why she won in Massachusetts. Who cares what these endorses think? I care what the candidate thinks and not by proxy, thank you. Kennedyâ??s, Oprah, vote in the booth and leave your â??built-inâ?? audiences to think for him or herself. Can they?

    4. Laura Montes  02/02/2008 09:18 PM Report

I suggest the guests read the Audacity of Hope where Obama is the first to mention the bush tax cuts, education reform, foreign policy and health care, he did not wait for Edwards to mention these topics, he clearly states his positions and who he views policies in this inspiring book.

American's should take the time to read it, or listen to it before voting.

    5. Jorge from Bloomington  02/01/2008 02:23 PM Report

Klein and Alter are clearly on both sides of this fight for the Dem nomination. But I agree with Sarah Ireland and Alter: Clinton's expertise is highly overrated. If Clinton were such an expert she never would have allowed Bush to get her into trusting his instinct and judgement. Instead she would have sided with the many people in her party that voted against the resolution authorizing Bush to use our war machine against Saddam Hussein's fourth-rate, depleted stone throwers. Even yesterday's missile attack into Pakistan to get al Qaida's No. THREE makes Hillary, not Obama, look naive. Hillary suggested we wouldn't violate Pakistan's sovereignty even to get NUMBER ONE- bin Laden. Clinton's going to win this thing, but it won't be, as Klein suggests, because she's smarter on the issues or that she was closer in philosophy to Edwards. It will be because she is WHITE. And all of the pundits will look for small reasons why Obama lost (i.e. he was merely "the black candidate"); not why Hillary won (i.e. she is "white"). For you see, it's okay to say that blacks will vote for Obama because he's black; and even that Latinos are the decendants of the KKK and will never vote for a black candidate (even though elections past have debunked that popular myth). What is NOT okay is to admit that most whites will NEVER vote for a black candidate. That would be admitting that America is still very much a racist nation. And we can't admit that about ourselves.

    6. TABS  02/01/2008 10:27 AM Report

Mr Edwards left the race so that his presence wouldn't take votes away from Obama on Super Tuesday.

    7. Shaft  01/31/2008 07:04 PM Report

Edwards' withdrawal from the race will certainly make things fluid. It might also help Senator Obama, they are closely related in terms of certain policy matter; especially with respect to lobbying, in fact you heard it from the horse's mouth itself. As you have shown past clip earlier in the show, although in terms of position Edwards is a Conservative-Democract while Obama is Center Democrat leaning to the left. It would have been unthinkable a month ago to predict the way things turned out to be. However, we have to accept the outcome as it is the peoples' choice. The thing that males me question the motive behind Edwards draging feet after he revealed two moths ago that if either one call it off they would throw their supports to each other's camp. Edwards is about to stand on the sides he may have to throw his support behind Obama before it is too late. Clintons are already well placed in terms of their grassroot support and backups within the Democratic Party. It would only be fair for Edwards to endorse Obama now while the euphoria is still strong and let Obama ride the tide he created in South Carolina with added tide from the endorsement, so the race can get more interesting. After all Edwards support will only raise Obama just enough to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Clintons. I keep on referring Hillary as the Clintons as both are running with eqaul footing.

Alas! John Edwards Dropped Out Because Heartless America is Near-Sighted, Veto Power for Iran and American Elections!

Are we condemened to have another 4-year disasterous Republican Presidency?

      By: Dr. Murray M. Morgan

An Open Letter to Senators Obama, Clinton and My Fellow Americans

      Dear Senator Obama,

You can call me naive, cynical, ... but I do NOT want to see Presidency remains in the vicious/racist/cruel Republicans turf/hand for another four years. I wonder if those [the shadow government/corporative-military Industrial machinery\ who, really, through our bought-press [media\ run our country are the ones who prevented Dennis Kucinich's and John Edwards from being heard and being known the way that yours and Hillary's name are heard; the eventuality of which being prevention of Kucinich or Edwards from becoming the Democratic nominee.

You can NOT imagine the teardrop that slid down my cheek when I heard about the uplifting news. Because of the WRONGS and trauma that is continuously/still being inflicted on African Americans, election of you as the President of the United States would not only has soothing/healing effect on African Americans, but also, it would bring back the LOST good reputation that our country, undeservedly, used to enjoy in the past; lost/vanished because of the BLATATANT/NAKED atrocities that, during King George's reign, people of Iraq, Iran [the most civilized nation on the face of earth -- read a little bit more about Iran to know why\ and other countries of Middle East have endured and suffered from.

What I am seeing [because of what I have seen of the racist people of our country\ is that Republicans love to have you or Hillary as the NOMINEE of the Democratic Party because they believe that they can beat you both easily because of the color of skin and gender prejudice/discrimination. I believe that Republicans hate to see John Edwards as our NOMINEE.

Although I crave for seeing your popularity to be genuine and true, because of the ignorance and embedded racism in our country, I am a kind of worried that it is the racist tactic of Republican party that might have instructed their members to vote for you so that they make you the NOMINEE of the Democratic Party for to, then [during the face-to-face competition\, by turning on their vicious attack machine and having their members [amongst which the most racist ones who normally do not vote\ to cast their votes for Republican NOMINEE; and once again very easily [for another four years\ steal the Presidency from the people.

I hope I am wrong. Call me skeptic, ... but I think it is a very wishful thinking [of Caroline and Senator Kennedy\ to think that Republicans, Asians/Hispanics -- who do not seem to like "Blacks\ and prejudiced White Democrats to vote for an African American even at this day and age [in 21st century\. Please, believe and accept it from me that it is my dream to see you as the President of the United States. Because, the only event that might make people of other country to, once again, look at America with envy and admiration is that American people elect a "Black" as their President.

Such event makes people of other countries to believe that America is, really, sorry for her vicious acts in the past; the attack on Iraq [with 1000000 casualty, ... \, the fabrication of American-Embassy-Hostages-taking-in Tehran [by Kissinger, Rockefeller, Ashraf Pahlavi, and one other person -- who thought of it to happen by "radical-students" as a "revolutionary"-like-act so that America uses the excuse to by freezing Iran's assets, imposing sanctions, and having Saddam to attack Iran cause PROBLEM for the revolution fail/not-become-successful in establishing Mardom-Saalari/Democracy in Iran AND that other countries in the region think twice to emulate it.

We, hypocritically, state/shout/pretend that we want to export/establish Democracy to the region yet we cause/make so many problems to prevent its establishment in Iran that its people[, with inspiration of independence and aim of removal of resources-plundering-tentacles/suckers/hooks from their land\, had dared to revolt and topple the brutal government that we had helped to be established in there by our CIA-guided Cout d'Etats of 1953 against Dr. Mohammad Mossaddegh; the DEMOCRATICALLY-elected Prime Minister of our puppet in there; naming "Shah" ["Shahanshah"-e-Iran/"the King of the Kings" Mohammadreza Pahlavi\.

In that event (joyous illus ional Obama as President) one thing that I want you to promise me is that you would be treating Iran and other countries as equals and that you would treat them with respect without attitudes and condescending-treatment. If you do that, then people of Iran themselves[assured of absence of any kind of outside danger/pressure\ without asking for outside-help, would rise against their oppressive/tyrannical government and, peacefully, convince/persuade the tyrants-in-charge to step down and return the power back to the people and to their real representatives; without having to, any longer, tolerate the insult of somebody at the top of power-pyramid whose title, "GURDIANship of Faghih/Savant" over people/the-whole-nation" [an ultimate insult to people of Iran\, means the "Faghih"/"leader" represents, as [the "Faghih/Savant" or "leader" Khomeini and other self-declared savants without any shame dared to utter it\ to be the Guardian of all the members of society -- except for few self-declared-savants-- that is, every member of the people of Iran are minor/stupid/retards who need to have a Guardian to decide for them. When outside pressure/danger threatens the country, to diffuse it, people of Iran tend to gather, around whatever government they have in their country; even if it is a brutal/tyrannical/oppressive government such as the one that is ruling in Iran right now. You should NOT listen to what those blue-blooded Pro-Shah individuals who, no longer, are in charge -- not able to suck life out of people -- who live abroad [in LA, Van Couver, London, Paris, ...\. You, having have had several-century-long history of suffrage of brutalistic/oppressive exploitation, [I am sure that\ understand the resentment that is ensued as the result of 110-years long resources-plunder and humiliating treatments (by West of Iran).

Does it make sense to go to a shop and, instead of saying "HIGH"/asking "HOW ARE YOU", BULLYINGLY with a blue-blooded condescending attitude humiliate, threaten and demand the shop-keeper that has something that we need so badly to give it to us? I am sure that if we treat people of Iran with respect and equals, they would be more than happy to be friends and trade with us. Let us "not do what we would not appreciate others do to us".

You should bow to the will of people of Iran regarding their decision to have [or not to have\ full nuclear fuel cycle capability and NOT wanting to be dependant on the outsiders that, for several time, have amassed their money but broke their contract with Iran without compensation [like France, Germany, USA\. People of Iran have the same right as we, for several times, have stated to have; the right of not reliance on others to give us our nuclear fuel.

Please, let [together with your Secretary of State\ us ask for and pray for forgiveness of God and people of Iran for our tresspassings that have inflicted harm and WRONGS on them. Promise me that you will put an end to our political abuses of the United Nations and its security arm, namely, the United Nations Security Council AND by removal of the illegally obtained sanctions-imposing resolutions and release of Iran's assets together with compensating Iran for our TRESSPASSes/Wrongs ask them to, once again, become our friend.

Also, let us, please, join the International Court of Criminal Justice, International Court of Civil Justice, Kyoto or any other International Treaties for Protection of Environment (distinction of one species/hour indicts the seriousness of the harm that we are inflicting on Earth which is our ONLY home in the Universe). Also, though, it sounds idealistic, let us remove the Veto right that, unfairly, we have given ourselves OR let us make Iran a member of UN Security Council with VETO power to bring balance in the decisions of UNSC because, as a kind/fair nation (that in its past history has given shelter to oppressed people an example of which is her current stance viz à vie Israel/Palestinian issue; the same stance that, 2500 years ago, Cyrus The Great of Iran, in upholding justice/fairness, took/had and gave shelter to the oppressed Jews that were fleeing/escaping the brutal Ferro of Egypt. It is ironic that, nowadays, in their name (in the name of Jewish people) Israel has engaged in brutal racist apartheid oppression on Palestinians AND the same Iran, since 1979, for the sake of upholding JUSTICE/FAIRNESS, is rejecting brutal treatment of Palestinians by Israel.

This way, people of the world would see our sincere regret that would, gradually, make them to, once again, look up upon us with admiration, respect and envy.

Sir, please, be careful of deceitful votingâ??s of Republicans and do NOT fall for their trick. Analyze and decide to withdraw your candidacy for President if, in your gut, you find that becoming the nominee of the Democrats would cost people to have another four years of disastrous Republicans' Presidency.

Please, do NOT allow these immoral/slick/brutal/racist/careless Republicans [who have no feeling/care for WORKING people\ to choose our [Democratic\ nominee.

I believe John Edwards has much better chance to, in November, beat Republicans than you. Please, accept the sincerity of my wish to have a black President which is very healing but, unfortunately, unrealistic.

      Yours,

      Murray

Joe pontificates but doesn't do his homework; Obama's policy papers are for more detailed and cohesive than Clinton's. But When Barack does go into detail he sounds like a professor. ________________ __________________ Besides, if he holds forth on one issue, people who aren't into that issue but care about another issue, get bored.________

      __________ ________

On foreign policy, Clinton is pathetic. Remember how she got all hoity toity about Obama responding to a question with

"If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf will not act, we will."_______ ____ _________

It was Hillary who labelled Obama â??naive & irresponsibleâ??. But right now that is what US is doing. Two or three times US has sent a guided drone over the border and struck at an encampment where the biggies were supposed to be. And each was fairly successful but didn't get # 1 or # 2.

      __________ _____ ___ _ _ __

The funny thing is that BILL Clinton did the very same thing for which Hillary is condemning Obama!!! In the late 90s, Bill sent a rocket into an Al Quaida training camp in Afghanistan and just missed Bin Laden and friends by a few hours. Now if it was successful Bill would have been a hero. He was certainly as experienced as one could be. I guess Obama has the rare capacity of learning from the experience of others. That is called wisdom.

    12. John Kohut  01/30/2008 11:56 PM Report

Overall, a cogent and interesting discussion. I do think Joe Klein missed a very important point when touting Hillary's command of the inner-Washington mileau over Obama's. Perhaps. Left unsaid though by Joe is just how polarizing a figure Hillary is. In the Northeast, that's a real problem against her. Obama on the other hand offers hope and change. That resonates with me much more than the prospect of a "twofer" Billary presidency.
