I agree with Machado's comment and would like to add requesting a discussion with the on-line micro-lending organization Kiva and its apparent success.

Check out his microfinance idea at work at http://www.kiva.org
Kiva.org allows individuals to make $25 loans to low-income entrepreneurs in the developing world. By doing so, individuals like you provide affordable working capital for the poor (money to buy a sewing machine, livestock, etc.), empowering them to earn their way out of poverty.

I found a '99 edition of "Banker to the Poor" and a 2007 paperback of the same book. Were you referring to the '07 paperbook when you mentioned his NEW book?
Machado 01/14/2008 01:14 AM Report
Charlie. How about make a special going deeper on Yunus ideas? You may invite other economists from different schools to debate with him.

I would be so curious to know whether Prof. Yunus had ever heard of a Fr. Dominique Pire, O.P, (1910- 1969), who, just short of 50 yrs. ago received the Nobel Peace Prize, 1958, for his amazing work in helping to re-settle great numbers of refugees and Displaced Persons from the camps in Europe after WW II. and, who after receiving the Nobel Prize extended his humanitarian work with projects combining local self-help with private international aid (vs. direct small bank loans) in order to increase food production, improve medical services, develop educational programs, aiming at intervillage collaboration. The first project 1962-1967 was at Gohira, East Pakistan, the second, 1969 at Kalakkad, now Bangladesh. Unfortunately he died 1969 and I cannot find out what happened to those projects. Prof. Yunus' efforts remind me of seeds Fr. Pire sowed then in that area of the world to relieve poverty. May all such efforts flourish.

Thank you for bringing Muhammad Yunus' vision back into the light. His actions are bringing some of his ideas to life; hopefully more of his vision will come to be realized. The need for Social Capitalism grows every day, I'm hoping more people will join Muhammad so that
this ancient need will finally be filled.
chris macrae 01/13/2008 06:32 PM Report
I so hope that Charlie has time to do a part 2 asking Yunus to go through his wishes for remarkable social business cases involving companies at the top of global market sectors in Bangladeshi Bottom of the Pyramid applications which are effectively guaranteed to have minimal financial risk whilst Yunus energetically co-brands them. I was lucky enough to hear of some examples whilst spending 3 hours with Dr Yunus in Bangldaesh last week. Unlike anyone I have ever met he demonstrates how simply economists can change the world if they integrate hi-trust relationships with the poorest in the compound models they develop.

Wow, Mr Yunus you are agin with a new concept: social Business that, I believe, matters for the globe to change. I hope that your new of social business in the field of Economics will be fully able to convince the authority for Nobel prize agin.
wishing you rediant health

Social Capitalism is an excellent idea, but how does it differ from say 'non-profit' status here in the US? I know there are always scandals about CEOs of 'non-profit' corporations making many millions of dollars, like United Way.
