Sorry, but I cannot listen to Palin without wincing. Without addressing her obvious inability to communicate (a grammar nightmare), she has an alarmingly low level of intellectual curiosity. Charlie: How about healthcare? Her response is to state the obvious. And then she hands off to Gov. Napolitano. Charlie: “Do you know what the Bush administration’s energy policy is? Palin: “We hear about it in the media.” It’s clear that Charlie understands that Palin is not deep, so he keeps it light and points the harder questions to Governor Napolitano. Palin is like some business people I work with. They are sound-bite managers. She is a sound-bite politician, and very comfortable with it.

I see now that cspan re-ran a roast from over 3 years ago (2005), and I was inaccurate in my earlier roast comment (though this 2005 roast was also for a great cause). I apologize for my misunderstanding. However, my other comments still apply. Crass and vulgar is in the eyes of the beholder (and what do you think a roast is anyway?). I missed one point earlier as well... contrary to your statement, Caroline, it has been shown that the "uneducated populace" in general are who voted for McCain. Look at all the high ranking (literate and intellectual) Republicans who broke ranks and supported Obama as just one example of this. Okay... enuff said by me. I'm outa here.
Hans 11/20/2008 03:01 PM Report
Caroline... I strongly disagree with your comment about "hardly chose excellence." The country indeed chose intelligence, good judgment, sincerety, thoughtfulness, intelligence, plus complete sentences and correct syntax. Oh, did I mention intelligence? Nothing mediocre about Mr. Obama, and quit with the old, tired, stale "inexperience" routine. Your "morally bankrupt" charge is baseless and a hollow partisan attack. And... this is h-eye-larious... you take a silly roast of a comedian (Stephen Colbert... and for a great charity cause), and you judge Mr. Obama's "cronies" as crass and vulgar and mediocre clowns and say THEY are the reason for 9/11???! You and your comments have no dignity and no credibility whatsoever. Talk to the hand, Caroline. No matter which side of the political fence you may be on - red, blue, or jade(d) - you should be ashamed for making such comments. Okay... here's your one true statement: "The country is being run by a group of self-congratulatory imbeciles." Yes, it is right now. However, in January that will change.
Caroline 11/09/2008 04:57 PM Report
This is not to say that Palin is acceptable. She is even worse than the Democrats but her grotesqueness does not diminish theirs.
Caroline 11/09/2008 04:55 PM Report
Sasa, this country hadrly chose "excellence." Indeed, they chose not only mediocrity, but also inexperience and falsity. You should feel equally as insulted by the fact that an inexperienced nobody will soon occupy the White House, with his crass, vulgar cronies. This Obama spent merely a year in the senate, doing pretty much nothing, before daring to run for the highest office in the land. Thanks to his morally bankrupt cronies, and the absolute laxity of our media, he was elected by a hysterical and uneducated populace. I was disturbed by the Roast of Rahm Emanuel, which aired yesterday on C-Span. If our country is being run by crass, vulgar, mediocre clowns such as the ones who made an appearance at that dinner, it is no wonder airplanes were hijacked, flown into NYC, the Pentagon, etc. The country is being run by a group of self-congratulatory imbeciles.
Sasa Lemire 11/09/2008 04:35 PM Report
I watched this interview when I googled Sarah Palin's name on the day McCain chose her as a running mate. I was shocked by her inability to talk of any other issue besides energy or national security. Then as I got to hear her all through the campaign she proved for sure that she is UNDEREDUCATED & INARTICULATE. I decided to watch it again today with a renewed perspective now that she has gone back to Alaska . The difference between these two women is so marked.
I read an editorial in the NY Times on Oct 26, 2008 that quoted Betty Friedan. She said we would know when women had arrived when a mediocre woman was elected into higher office in just the same way we have elected mediocre men into higher office. It seems the Republican Party prefers mediocracy in the very highest office as they wanted up there close to the office that George W Bush will be vacating.
I'm so glad that this country was wise and chose excellence for our highest office this time.
Liz 11/07/2008 12:53 PM Report
There is quite a contrast between the governors of Arizona and Alaska. Napolitano is intelligent, forthcoming and responds to the questions. Didn't the McCain team see that Sarah is no intellect but a "good ole girl", a winkin' back slapper. Sheesh you guys. She and her ilk will be a problem for Obama now that she's in the national spotlight.
I hope Napolitano is called upon to serve the Obama administration. She has grit and commonsense and I hope we see more of her.
SFinSF 11/05/2008 11:46 PM Report
I am reading today that Napolitano is being given serious consideration at Obama's Attorney General. I cannot imagine that he could find a finer person to take that critical job and try to repair the enormous damage that has been done to it. Interesting to watch this the day after Obama has been elected. In reading the comments, I'm saddened that, here again, the spotlight is on Palin, the Nincompoop and not on Janet Napolitano, who is one of the finest governors in the country, sharp as a whip, straight-talking, thoughtful, not afraid of tackling or talking about the tough issues...and a very compassionate person, as well. (I was in the same graduating class with her at Santa Clara Univ., 3000 undergrads. What is remarkable is that she seems to be the same person: older, more experienced and wiser -- but very "real," down-to-earth, sensible, smart.)
I hope he has the wisdom to choose her.

If Palin's husband is separating the oil, from the water, and the gas, and wants to continue managing this from Alaska to the rest of the US? Wouldn't he make more money if this is approved? Is it not illegal for someone in office to encourage others to do business with a relative? Todd makes more money, honey makes more money. Eeek! How can this be allowed?

Palin's answers remind me of an ill-prepared but able-to-write student, trying to stretch out one fact into a full-page essay question: repeat the question, rephrase the question, turn the question into a statement, insert one tidbit of actual knowledge, throw in plenty of patriotic adjectives, reword it again -- or, turn it around and answer some remotely related question for which you did study. Snip away all the excess verbiage & see what answer is left, if any. The contrast in depth of knowledge between her and the governor of Arizona is quite startling.
Laura 10/26/2008 03:23 PM Report
Palin’s responses to Rose’s questions were not “knowledgeable and well-spoken.” They were evasive, shallow, and self-serving. Her emphasis on ethics reform was more ironic than reality. On October 11, 2008 Governor Palin was found in a bipartisan report to have breached ethics and abused power as Governor of the State of Alaska with regard to what has come to be called “Troopergate.” A further investigation is still pending.
Palin hired friends and contributors to work for her once she became governor.
America is now experiencing the result of an unethical president who abused power and hired cronies to top positions. Palin is not the solution for change. Her actions show that she is part of the problem.
TnaPie 10/25/2008 10:54 PM Report
Is this the video/interview that the Rep strategists watched and was the deciding factor for choosing Palin as VP running mate? (Read NY Times magazine) They must be in the same intellectual bandwidth as Palin. What has her answer of energy got to do with Charlie's question on education? She claims she is a Washington outsider...well, she should be if she is only aware of domestic issues. For someone who had a degree in journalism, it is surprising that she is not well-versed and updated in global issues. Bloom where you are planted. She has a lot of "education" to do!
Gotta have ENERGY (power and physical energy) to listen to her but on the seoond thought, she is a waste of time!
I'd rather watch National Geographic than rely on her knowledge.

As I read the comments and opinions here, I sense fear, demonstrated by your sarcasm and shallow observances. People do not become elected officials because they are stupid or uninformed. Try looking at the commitment, balance, and guts of Sarah Palin (that's Pay-lin) and how she has worked her way to the TOP from humble beginnings. She has a devoted partner in her husband. Looks like they work things out as a team, the entire family, which is the way it is supposed to be. Or maybe you think the Clintons portray a healthier image? Negative criticism is for losers. Be positive and optimistic about a righteous change for our country, and show respect and appreciation for those willing to do what YOU whine about. Perhaps your life will improve, as well. Then who will you blame?
Greg 10/25/2008 07:33 AM Report
Being from Alaska I have witnessed Sarah Palin's rise. I met her at a function while she was running against the incumbant Frank Murkowski. She has energy, is smart and has her priorities in order. Unlike her past & present opponents she has humility & doesn't take what she is given for granted. This is a quality that I like in a leader.
The country faces imense challeges & I wish whoever wins in November all the best. This country will depend on all of our best efforts.

No... That's what the news people say, that that's what the moderate conservatives "should think". I write in plain english. Anyway I like reading your comments, they help me understand John McCain better and appreciate him more.

These Democrats are really showing themselves as the anti women party. From the naivete about prenatal care to the insults hurled towards a successful woman with more public office experience and 8+ years more executive experience than Obama. A woman bucking the old boys club while Obama grew up on kicking his opponents off the ballot and bathed in Chicago corruption. She far more qualified than Obama to be President - yet she is in the #2 slot!
Sexist Democrats embarrassed their #1 is less qualified than the other party's #1 and #2.
My vote goes from Hillary to McCain-Palin. Shame on you old boy cronies - you will be defeated in your hubris.

Despite the Dems and the allied main stream media’s desperation to see Romney as McCain’s Veep, Mitt is clearly out, with (1) Obama doubling down on the class warfare theme (McCain’s 7 houses) and (2) McCain doubling down with ads showing the hypocrisy of Biden attacking Obama in the primaries — Romney did way more than that contra McCain.
This leaves only Govs Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty. Pro-abortion Ridge and Dem-Lieberman were never real considerations, despite relentless media goading. Pawlenty’s lackluster TV performances, coupled with Palin pizzazz, the primacy of oil drilling and the ticked off women/Hillary voters, does now portend a McCain/Palin checkmate on the Dems. This is so albeit the Dems and liberal media dare not mention Palin’s name, that is, everyone but…..
And if there’s any question as to Palin being uniquely positioned and able to more than nullify Biden in debate, see the excellent discussion at palinforvp.blogspot.com

Get over your miserable selves and deal with reality for once in your lives.
All this noise, from a group of people, who believe in Global Warming, with no scientific or concrete evidence, that it is anything more than a cycle of the earth's weather.
But can't figure out when life begins......
I wonder what humans did to change the Mideast from rain forest to desert. You know all that carbon and oil "our enemies" are pumping out of the ground, with the technology we developed and taught them.
Reality! Get a grip, before America is totally socialist and freedom is once again non-existent on this planet.
And tell me who it is besides Christians and the USA who go around helping the poor, the weak, the hungry, the down trodden, and ask for nothing in return, but to do the same for someone else? Is it the Muslims? The Jews? The Hindus? The Buddhist? Fulan Gong? The Communist? The Socialist? The dictators and tyrannts? Who?
Are there bad people in our government/business, that do horrible things around the world? Damn right there are. And it's about time we cleaned house and started with a fresh group. Long Long Overdue.

does anyone appreciate the irony of the multitude of self-described "liberal" commentators insiting that all other view holders are "close-minded"
is it possible that reasonable people might approach an issue and come to dissimilar or even opposite conculsions
must everyone who holds an opposing view be a "retard" a "nazi" "evil" or "dangerous"
with re to the matter at hand could it even be possible that all 4 candidates are qualified politicians who intend on working for the greater good though they may differ on the definition and means of execution.
it seems to me that the current combination of poorly conceived sound byte rhetoric with little outlet for full discourse on issues facing the country and world and the abuse of hyperbole by all parties is not serving anyone's long term interests.

The reason as someone asked why the Palin is being attacked so much is very simple--she can inspire. E.g. From Todd from MSNBC, "The republicans found their Obama". Needless to say, to attack Palin who has actual executive experience, and had the foresight as previously mentioned for energy independence way before McCain, Obama, Biden, and Bush (SR. and JR.).. says much. What are Obama's qualifications to be President (not Vice President as Palin will be)?? How many times did Obama (only after the Reps mentioned Obama never was in Iraq) visited Iraq what once? twice? We speak of having Judgment, where was Obama's JUDGMENT about energy 4 years ago..oh wait Obama voted like McCain on the energy bill that Cheny and Bush put together...

Well, what can I say, the liberal press favors liberals and thats how it is... If the press wants you elected they ask you easy ("hard") questions and never something really serious.
I'm sure being married and having a childhood that brought you to Harvard Law was very taxing...oh wait Obama will tax those business and individuals who make 250k and above so that they will in turn to keep the difference lay you and I off...- that my friends is BUSINESS and REALITY.

I thought Palin was knowledgeable and well spoken in this interview. She talked of ethics reform and the need to have more energy in order to pay for a better education system. As for the negative comments about whether she knew of Bush's energy plan, Governor Napolitano didn't have a comment either.
This interview shows that those who claim Palin doesn't have enough experience simply have their political blinders on.
David 10/24/2008 04:22 AM Report
WOW! I think I got whiplash on that track change from education to energy! The comment,"We hear about it through the media," as an answer to the Bush Policy question, wow. Governor Palin plainly lacks the "knowledge base" to hold the position of Vice President, much less be second in line for the most powerful position in the world. She also appeared to want to sit in the corner and not be a real active participant in this discussion.
Governor Palin you are the republican candidate for the Vice President of the United States, please step up to the plate and offer some real policies and beliefs, don't just hang by the wayside and duck questions with stammering and fluffy statements that have little meaning or substance.

To ByronJarvis,
"Thursday night is drawing nigh, and this girl will unload on Biden like Katrina on New Orleans"
For you to use the tragedy of this murdering event to describe your hopeful outcome of the debate on Thursday is so telling of you as a Republican and a supporter of John McCain who up until this June had never gone to New Orleans since Katrina hit the area. How typical for a McCain supporter to be so tasteless and hypocritical at the expense of so many who died. Meanwhile when Bush was doing a flyover of New Orleans, McCain was waiting for him with Birthday Cake and all you GOPers can do is say, "Let them eat cake." There must be a special kind of hell for people like you.
