The SURGE worked. Wars are NOT tidy, nor predictable, nor without setbacks. Google: "The Iraq Liberation Act of 1998." Summary: A. To remove Saddam from power (REGIME CHANGE); B. impose a Democratic Government. Clinton was President. Act voted into LAW and passed by UNANIMOUS vote of the US Senate. GW Bush was the Governor of Texas.
Of 8 main provisions of the American Law, Bill Clinton achieved ZERO.
Of 8 main provisions of American Law a US President is Constitutionally obligated to achieve, GW Bush achieved 8.
The rest of the story is a side bar and most of it is opinion, not fact.

I've seen the movie and the interview.
Good movie and short interview.
What I want to say is this : that Bush-Iraq WAR cost a lot of money and only - just only - 4 or 5 people from the Bush's administration have "priority" to $ 1.860 Billion. The humanity is not exist in the top of the "American Gangsters". For them the human's life is not important, only oil and money.
This is my point of view.
I hope all the people who've seen this movie will understand that : we are HUMAN and our LIFE is the most important in the world!
All the best and respect to Mr Ferguson.

Just watched No End In Sight, in the UK, broadcast a few days ago, that is January 2008. Very impressed indeed by the journalism, and overwhelmed by the true nature of the situation in Iraq. However, some questions remain: what about the significance of taking the UK along with them? And the difficult job the British troops did in Basra? And why did Blair do it!? We still have vital questions we would like put on this side of the Atlantic. The film has yet to be made that looks at that issue.
Finally, while we live in a world where the reputation of the USA has been thoroughly besmirched by this debacle, it is wonderfully reviving to see that there are intelligent, thoughtful, sensitive and extremely brave Americans who are prepared to speak out for what they believe. Perhaps sometime they will inhabit the White House.

Kudos to Charles Ferguson! Someone in film finally has focused on the real problem here - the policy makers' seemingly CRIMINAL mistakes, oversights, ineptitude, arrogance, exclusiveness. Why hasn't there been more success in efforts to impeach Bush, and to bring War Crimes charges against Bush and his closest advisors??
Peter Johnson 10/28/2007 11:51 PM Report
Just watched Charles Ferguson's film No End in Sight - what can I do to vote to impeach Bush - or do what is necessary to try him for crimes against humanity - I'm mad as hell like so many others and want this SOB out of office - he's not my President.

I agree with the majority of the comments. Having seen this film, i was very interested in hearing the interview with the director. I don't know why it was cut short, as if it were an afterthought. I think there are no more important issues these days than the issues this documentary brings up. I would love to see a full hour discussion on the film. Please bring Charles Ferguson back and give him the time he deserves.
Margaret Harley 08/20/2007 06:56 PM Report
Apparently there was an "End in Sight" for Charles Ferguson. What happened? Please bring him back. I would much rather listen to him talk about his film for an hour than to some pundit like Thomas Friedman. Thanks.

The interview with Mr. Ferguson seemed to have been cut off in the middle. Please bring him back on so we may learn more about what he has learned in making the movie. And, we'd like to know where we can see the movie and when. Very unlike the usual interviews due to the incomplete nature of the interview.
fjm 08/18/2007 10:43 AM Report
My comment is part complaint in that I wish Charlie's segment with Cahrles Ferguson was a little longer; this segment was way too short.
It was an interview on a vastly critical topic, the war in Iraq, a war that this administration gave very little thought to as far as the post-war phase goes.
In any event, the interview was short but good. Well done.

In response to Mr. Free: I pose the questions to clarify why proclaiming the disbanding of the Iraqi army and the de-baathification was wrong. The questions are in the context of the Shi'ite response. Are you implying that the Shi'ite response is irrelevant? It would seem the Sunni response to de-baathification is relevant in determining that, in hindsight, it shouldn't have been American policy.
I hope Mr. Rose further questions Mr Ferguson on this point.
Chris Free 08/17/2007 01:55 AM Report
after invading another country because they were
supposedly a threat to you, what reason is there
to understand any group's response except as it
relates to removing the threat.
but assume you want to "nation build" or build a
democracy; you might think it important to first
understand a group's response to your notion;
for example, you might uncover who is willing
to die for the cause of building that democracy --
among other not so salient facts.
again, what democracy? elections and forced political
alliances are not a democracy -- democracy exalts the
individual; infant democracy is part mob rule and
part forced didacticism; mature democracy assumes
voters follow a rule of law to allow representatives
to act as proxies and both to understand and respect
their individual and collective responsibility.
what would have been the response of the union
had the french government NOT 1. proclaimed the
disbanding of the confederate army and 2. removed
southerners from government positions? aren't
current deadlocks in constitutional negotiations
partly about de-southernization? another question
to pose is why some americans are supporting or
opposing de-sothernization? granted it's a
complicated process but is it in france's interests
in america to provide union representatives
with a list of former confederates that france
wants involved in the governing of the country?
if it is, what would the response of the
majority of northerners be?
where's rod serling when you need him?
Barry O'Connell 08/16/2007 01:28 PM Report
In response to Mr. Free:
You ask, "What democratic process?" I was refering to the elections you mention as well as the other ongoing processes of participatory government.
The question I posed is stil unanswered however. Namely, what would have been the response of the Shi'ite majority had the U.S. government NOT 1, proclaimed the disbanding of the Iraqi army and 2, removed Baathists from government positions?
Isn't the current deadlock in constitutional negotiations partly about de-baathification? Another question to pose is why are some Iraqis supporting or opposing de-baathification?
Granted it's a complicated process but is it in the American interests in Iraq to provide Shi'ite representatives with a list of former Baathists that Americans want involved in the governing of the country?
If it is, what would the response of the majority of Shi'ites be?

Really enjoy the insightful interviews with colorful and knowlegeable guests, especially the political genre. How can we see the entire interview with Charles Ferguson?
Chis Free 08/16/2007 03:18 AM Report
first, if we hadn't simply disbanded iraq's army
but disarmed them and if we hadn't simply expelled
the baathists but integrated them back into society
after the elections there would be some chance of
a nation left to build; why we did such important
job so prosaically boggles even the inane mind.
second, what democratic process?

have watched the interview if it had been listed on the website earlier. When I looked in earlier in the day, the only scheduled guest

Barry O'Connell 08/15/2007 08:12 PM Report
Many people have said it was a mistake to 1, disband the Iraqi Army and 2, expel Baathists from the government.
Then what is the answer to this question:
Would the Shi'ite majority have joined the democratic process had these two conditions NOT been supported by the U.S. government?
Mr. T 08/15/2007 07:57 PM Report
That final clip on the film, comparing the new Iraq to a lawless Afghanistan but on a much bigger scale gave me the chills. As Ferguson points out in another interview (search Google Video) "We took an aquarium and turned it into fish soup" .
This does NOT bode well at all for our security. We basically have created a terrorist mega state. Bravo. Bravo, Mr. Bush and your cabal.
I have heard it said that incompetence in its extreme is indistinguishable from evil and Bush has proven that. I am sick and disgusted.

Looks like a must see film. Two very superficial comments. First, Mr. Ferguson as a filmmaker you should know not to wear a striped shirt like that on TV ! It makes me dizzy ! :) . Secondly anyone else notice how the filmmaker just seems *really* sad ? The subject matter would certainly lend itself to that, but it looks to me like he is going through some personal stuff, maybe. Anyhow, I agree that this was way too short and seems weirdly edited. From what I understand the movie is going to come out soon and we'll all be able to see then. I also hope Mr. Ferguson will be on C-Span, maybe on Lamb's Q&A section so we can get a deeper interview.

This looks like a powerful film and it might be a big blow to the administration. I am going to send a link to all my friends, I only wish I could get my hands on the DVD sooner than Oct. What an eyeopener!
Don't make this about censorship of the show. Rose just exposed us all to this film, don't redirect the focus.

Apparently there was and is something going on behind the scenes regarding the interview with Mr. Ferguson. From some research I did online earlier today, I found references that indicate that this particular interview was supposed to have aired on July 31st. Hmmmm. . . And then, more than two weeks later, we finally get to see a mere 10-11 minutes of the, no doubt, heavily edited (censored), interview. It is obvious that this movie is very damaging to the current administration, and I admit that this is totally naive of me, but I am appalled to even consider that this riveting interview was censored, but by who and at whose direction? Like the previous poster, I would like access to the FULL transcript of the ENTIRE interview.
Beatrice Nordberg 08/15/2007 03:47 PM Report
Very ,very good and sincere interview - would like to buy movie, but where?, Thank you so very much.
Robert Worthwright 08/15/2007 03:42 PM Report
Doesn't it seem odd that whenever there is a piece (or guest) on Charlie Rose that sheds the light of truth on the Bush Administration and this disastrous war in Iraq, it (or they) are blatently cut off or interrupted so that the audience is spared from learning what their government is really hiding from them? It seems with this guest, Charles Ferguson, and his very promising film, the editing team (aka state censors) did the dirty work (instead of Charlie) by abruptly chopping off the end of the segment preventing us from getting a full appreciation of this very revealing film (too revealing apparently) and how we could get information on where to view it. No...wouldn't want to give the masses too much damaging information. Too dangerous.
