This explanation of what is happening on the ground in Iraq is EXACTLY why the Bush administration was able to win approval for the war from the American public and was able to hold on to that support for so long.
The Republicans are good at slogans. Americans LOVE slogans. "Keep it simple" isn't just a catch phrase. It is our national motto.
What Reed refused to say succintly and repeatedly was "We cannot do all of the things we need to do in order to leave Iraq in good shape." After 25 minutes, you get that. Sen. Reed does say that we were never going to be able to do that and that's why he voted against the war. But most Americans are not going to wait around for 25 minutes to hear that.
So the Democrats need to take a stand and say it early and often: "We cannot do all of the things we need to do in order to leave Iraq in good shape."
