Just a small point about America's technical brilliance such as the development of MRI scans. The Nobel prize for this work was shared between Paul Lauterbur of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Sir Peter Mansfield of the University of Nottingham England.

...and there are wonderful threads of Mark Twain in him...like Jon Stewart my generation breathes easier, here in Canada, knowing these guys are doing their craft and can go to a better network if the 'man behind the curtain' tries to pull them off the stage. A toast to you Bill. You put the handsome in nuanced intelligence.

I like Bill Maher so much. I respect him because he is not afraid to have anyone on his show. Left, right, whatever. He actually allows them to voice their opinions whether he agrees with them or not. I am so glad he is out there saying it like he sees it.I especially love the rant on the outing of under cover CIA agent Valerie Plame. I love New Rules on his Real Time w/ Bill Maher. Keep on keepin' on Bill.

Bill always hits the nail on the head. I'm just sorry I don't have HBO to watch him more often.

TribalReader makes some valid points, especially the part about narcissistic narrow-minded know-it-all hypocrites trying to pretend they know everything about religion based on some very selective editing and censorship. Essentially pretending (wishing) to be God. But they are angry, because most people given the opportunity would just piss on their faces after listening to what they have to say.
Tim Marlow 11/04/2008 07:07 PM Report
Over 200 documented religions on the planet. All different, all ridiculous. Nobody knows and thats it. Church is big buisness and control. I think bill hits the nail on the head. We need more thinkers like bill.
Ludafisk 10/24/2008 05:26 PM Report
Actually , I think TribalReader is the one who missed the point. I wonder if he really saw the movie. I really hope that Religilous starts a movement by like minded people, which is really about 75% of the people if they would just admit it.
TribalReader 10/14/2008 10:03 AM Report
About Bill Maher's ridiculous new movie Religilous. The movie is missing the whole basic point of religion and shows how limited Maher's research and perspective are, and how unconscious his hostility towards authority. What else is self-congratulatory narcissism. He is a fundamentalist too but of a different persuasion which happens to be as false as the current soul-less beliefs of religions.
This is what Maher is missing--one cardinal dimension of religion is the Interiors of Consciousness. By bad-mouthing and making fun of the fallacious mind and propagandized belief systems of underdeveloped religious human beings, one cannot deny what mystics of all epochs regardless of their religious inclinations EXPERIENCED in their interiors. Then the limitations of language and the politics of the tribe and pathologies of parenting got in the way of transcendental truth. That is why inner development is a solitary and individual affair. No religious symbol system can do the “inner work” that is necessary for attaining that state of being called the Buddha Mind, the Christ/Krishna Consciousness, aka Satori, Samadhi, Nirvana, Kensho, Fana in different religious systems.
http://www.selftransformation.net/articles/transcen.htm
Religions also comprise the essential meditational practices, the pointing out instructions to discover the latent state of infinity within which cannot be expressed in words and beliefs. The founders of all great religions had that particular experience of the Divine which is humanity's finest hidden potential. Instead of making fun of religions, Bill Maher will do much better to broaden his research and perhaps read William James and Ken Wilber and Evelyn Underhill (i.e. comparative understanding of mystical consciousness) what his fundamentalism might never allow him too. That is what Ken Wilber meant when he wrote about rehabilitating the interior.
'Thus our task is not specifically to reintroduce spirituality and somehow attempt to show that modern science is becoming compatible with God. That approach, which is taken by most of the integrative attempts, does not go nearly deep enough in diagnosing the disease, and thus, in my opinion, never really addresses the crucial issues.
'Rather, it is the rehabilitation of the interior in general that opens the possibility of reconciling science and religion.'

I have a friend with a great sense of humor who created an "early morning line" of the political scene that Bill's writers may want to exploit; here it is:(Actually, I tried to clean up the formatting but it is almost impossible to re-create the race program look in this comment field). If you writers are truly interested in something funny, email me at my address and I'll be happy to send you his word document or have him send it to you Since he deserves the credit. Thanks.

Certainely one of the most patriotic american! One who is not afraid to tell the truth which so many americans are afraid to hear. Sorry, but America is not the greatest country in the world, if it was, misery in this country would not exist.

Maybe bill maher is a tv star, but he is intelligent enough and concerned enough and brave enough to speak, question and accuse when and where it is needed. My hats off to him for his ability to weed thru the flak about this country and the myth that we are the greatest, smartest, bravest, kindest nation on earth. those who say so have never seen us from afar thru the eyes of others around the world. We have made grave mistakes during our brief history here and we are now paying the price. Money rules this country and we let it and that is WRONG...PERIOD! Our government has gone to the well of taxation and spending too many times and we have no way to stop it. Vote for an independent polititian who cares about the common man, not the common company.

The decline of a society begins when the public prefers to listen to people who rather shit on everything it is and stands for under the allusion that it's comedy. I find it quite distasteful to watch two people who think their the elites of society because their on t.v (which actually is the opposite , T.V is as common as you get) laughing about the stupidity of the American public and if we only were as informed as them, would we then make the right decisions. The only answer to that is, maybe we are stupid, to find a degenerate comedian's opinion worthy of debate on foreign policy or the state of our country.
Karen Fitzgerald 10/14/2007 01:59 AM Report
I would just like to ask, Charlie, why you are so invested in the United States being the greatest country in the world? Would it be so awful if we were only second-best or third-best? This interview showed yet again your arrogance and ego, particularly in your sputtering claim that we're making great progress in medical technology and curing cancer! Of all the absurdities. Wake up and realize that you were bamboozled by those medical researchers to get funding for their projects. You seem blind to people's motivation to make money, perhaps because you deny it in yourself.

Bill Maher is a dweeb (look it up) who talks a good talk. But, for the most part, he's just more hot air. I'd love to see him run for the oval office against any of his heros and see how far he gets. I'm betting if he had to actually hold down a job like that,s while other took cheep pot shots at him every day so they could profit from it, that he would flip flop and flounder around as would any fish out of water. Charlie, please don't waste your time our ours with him again in the future.

As a practicing physician in both family practice and geriatrics, I support Bill Maher's assertion that taking care of oneself, physically and psychologically, does more to ensure personal health than the technological advances in diagnosis and treatment of the last 20 years. Most of these advances do more to raise the cost of medical care. Very few, such as "statin" drugs for cholesterol control, have actually accomplished significant changes in health outcome. The medical diagnostic industry have created more discrete information on diagnosis, but most of the time clinicians defer to this expensive technology rather than risk using their clinical judgment. It has made good clinical and diagnostic thinking "rusty" since one can easily order a CT scan or an MRI scan without clearly thinking through what the history and physical exam of a patient's problem fully indicate. Hence, I am skeptical that technological advances in medicine has really made significant improvement for the populace at large. Thank you for providing this space for my opinion.
MacGuffin 05/10/2007 03:13 PM Report
Bill Maher has really evolved into one of the best--if not the best--political satirists in the country.
You can disagree with him, as many do, but the guy usually is ahead of the curve on the issues and accurate in his assertions (e.g. his facts are usually correct).
Plus he is funny as hell. He really has a sharp wit and a great delivery (very old school Jack Benny/Johnny Carson style). I go to his tapings as often as I can.
Great episode. Please have Bill Maher on more often.

Greg Goldberg 05/05/2007 10:34 AM Report
Itâ??s ironic to watch you arguing with Bill Maher about medicine achievements while both of you are correct. Bush administration is destroying academia as fast as they can and not just because they donâ??t increase NIH budget. They waste the money that is already there because they appointed leadership that is completely incompetent just as they did in other areas of the countryâ??s business just as Bill argued. The NIH road map is as much meaningless as the Middle East road map to nowhere.
