On Cape Cod, how fortunate to get up at 5:00 a.m. Easter morning, turn the television on to find Charlie Rose interviewing David McCullough! Not often do we hear a man speak so lovingly of his wife, family, and friends. He knows the secret of living a happy life...he loves his chosen work...research and writing. He also really listened to Charlie's questions, acknowledging and answering all of them. I found him to be a true inspiration and intend to see that my grandsons watch this program...their parents, too. I was especially interested in his book about the Johnstown Flood as I was born there and believe a good friend, Don Matthews worked with David McCullough on this book. I now intend to read all he has written and share the books with my housebound neighbor who will devour them with great relish.

I don't have anything in my collection by David McCullough, and as an avid fan of presidential history, that is a crime. I will definitely soon be in the market for one of his works. My favorite President of the United States is Thomas Jefferson. Will undoubtedly look into Mr. McCullough's works. Another great show. Thanks Charlie!

What an intelligent conversation! What a remarkable author! I've got to find a way to get this into my history and English classrooms! At times I find that Mr. Rose has a tendency to badger his guests (fearing the least little bit of dead air?), but he was--appropriately--a little more deferential here. Mr. McCullough can tell a great story without a lot of prompting from the host. Just let him answer the questions!

After WWII, Ho Chi Minh sent Harry Truman 14 letters in which he employed all imaginable formulas of supplication to get Truman to recognize the independence of Vietnam from France. Ho obviously was desperate for any response from (and willing to make any concessions to) Truman. Many officers of the OSS suggested that Ho was prepared to go as far as to disband the Communist Party if Truman wanted it. Why did Truman elect not to explore the options of peace in Vietnam at that stage? What was Trumanâ??s calculus on this matter? If Truman chose to disregard the advice of the OSS; whose advice was he listening to? How did the desire of Christians in Vietnam to disenfranchise, dominate and forcibly convert the general population figure in Trumanâ??s calculus? Was the Vietnam War a Christian Crusade? Was Truman the real father of the Vietnam War? How does the American posture in Vietnam in the mid and late 40s inform the American enterprise in Palestine in terms of the financial backing that the National Endowment for Democracy is providing for some Christians in Palestine? Is usurpation of power by Christians in Palestine and disenfranchisement of the general population a wise course of action? Is there a guarantee that the end of those Christians who, in coordination with and the backing of NED, seek to disenfranchise the general population in Palestine is not going to be like the end of President Diem and his family? What does Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness is supposed to mean in countries where the majority of the population is not Christian?
