It is so refreshing to listen to an artist who can intelligently express him/herself. I have always enjoyed Close's work. Now I have an appreciation/admiration for him as an artist. It is possible I am biased. I am an artist and I have a similar unpretentious philosophy about art. I disagree with the idea of not creating art on a desert island. I think for some the desire to create is so innate or so ingrained that I don't think isolation would stop the process. Close even mentioned at the beginning of the interview something like, " You paint to be alone." He may not be painting with his blood but I'm sure he would find something to create with.
