Allan Sandosham 11/02/2007 01:53 PM Report
As a professional energy engineer in California, I see so many energy efficiency programs that have been developed here with support from the California Energy Commission (www.energy.ca.gov)that could be exported to the rest of the United States and the world. The field of building energy management is ripe for a boost of innovation and investment. As the bulk of the building stock is existing buildings not new ones, the challenge is getting these technologies out to the millions of building owners and tenants that may not completely appreciate the value of making these energy upgrades. This is where we need to work with the regulatory framework to ensure that these technologies are pushed out to the marketplace more effectively. Innovative companies will be out in front. Government institutions is a good place as they have a large number of facilities to get the word out. However, the complete overhaul of the energy intensity of our economy will need to be achieved one building at a time. Climate change regulations that constrain the emission of carbon may be just the kick we need to make this transformation.
