It was great watching the dynamics between Thomas Sowell and Charlie Rose. With most guests, Charlie's liberal ideology does not come screaming across the tv screen. Not with Dr. Sowell, however. Charlie was noticably annoyed on three separate occasions by my count, that he was trying to turn into a "gotcha" moments --- Clarence Thomas and affirmative action, the intellectuals exchange, and especially the diversity exchange. Having the much harder argument to make, since the argument in support of individual freedom is based on long-term reality not easily identified without significant effort of reason, research, and testing of end results versus planned goals, Dr. Sowell did an outstanding job of clarifying the unpleasant reality that always results from the implementation of short-sighted, politically-motivated, and emotionally-laden liberal ideological big government policies. I couldn't help but notice how quickly Charlie moved away from Dr. Sowell's comments on the typcial liberal "hair of the dog" strategy. In terms of the alcoholic, the best way to cure a hangover is more alcohol, i.e. more "hair of the dog." In terms of the big government liberal, the best way to cure a failed liberal big government policy is to have more of the same. Dr. Sowell's "hair of the dog" analogy is as true today as it was in this 1995 interview; only more so because the stakes are higher.

Many times it seemed to me Charlie Rose was just plowing through his list of questions and not really engaging or allowing Dr. Sowell to have his say. Sadly this is the approach liberals such as Mr. Rose take when they dare to talk to someone whom they consider beyond the pale. Freedom of speech is clearly only to be allowed to people to whom one agrees.

Nice try, Charlie. Would've liked to see more Thomas Sowell discussing his book rather than your attempt to "gotcha" him on the nonsense of diversity. But would REALLY like to see Mr. Sowell and other common sense thinkers such as Bill Cosby, Charles Krauthammer, Walter Williams, Victor Davis Hansen debate social engineers and central planning advocates such as Paul Krugmann, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and anyone on the Duke faculty that signed the open letter condemnation of the Duke Lacrosse players.

      Dr. Thomas Sowell – There’s a man with a well-grounded intellect.

Dr. Sowell is arguably the greatest intellectual of this generation. Progressives and social liberals detest him because they know he has the facts, and that he does not pander to anyone. He is truly unclassifiable, rejecting labels like "conservative" or "libertarian." The American intelligentsia ought to show more respect to someone who understands that empiricism trumps emotionalism. Moreover, Sowell is too often characterized as a 'black' intellectual, rather than simply a factophilic intellectual.
