John Irving comes across in this interview as remarkably grounded, self-aware and genuinely humble. Forever a big fan of his writing, I am even more impressed now knowing, in his estimation, that his output is 7/8ths the product of perseverance and 1/8th natural talent. He is a walking testament that honest self-assessment and hard work, more than talent, makes all things possible.
