The Iraq war had nothing to do with 9-11. For over 10 years the neo-cons had been planning a way to overthrough the Saddam administration inorder to make Israel safer and to protect our oil interest in the region. 9-11 was the excuse the neo-con Bush administration needed to accomplish these two unrelated goals.
Since the war back-fired on the administration and made the region less secure, by putting Iran aligned shias in control and by further alienating the arab community, we must now stay until such time as this dilema is rectified. Unfortunately, we do not have a clue as to how to do this, so we bide our time by staying the course.
Until we break our dependance on oil, the powers that run this government will feel the need for a strong military presense in the Gulf.

It's been over a year since this conversation. Over 1,000 more troops and many many more Iraqi civilians dead. Out of all of them, George Packer and Jessica Tuchman Mathews were the only ones with any clue, the rest were optimists and apologists. Someone tell me again, what is the prize we are supposed to win even if we win this war (besides getting our troops back)?
