"Somewhere we began associating sacrifice with somehow losing our freedom." It is six years later, and the concept of sacrifice is still an intense cultural struggle.

He had the Iraq war pegged from the beginning. It's scary to watch this now and realize that most of what he said 3 1/2 years ago came to be true. You have to cringe when you re-watch those other guests who fell for the rhetoric for the war.

I hate when he goes into that "women hate to hear this" bit about conflict or blood diamonds. I'm a woman and I don't give a frog's tuchus about diamonds. I think if women know what goes on to mine diamonds they'll be less likely to buy them. And besides, it's not like women are going out and buying big bags of diamonds every day. Matter of fact, I think it's more often the men who go out and lay down the cash for diamonds as gifts for women.
This conversation was a couple years ago though and I haven't heard Maher say this lately, so maybe he's rethought the subject.
It's a rare gripe I have with Maher. Overall, I dig him.
