There's a ridiculous essentialism to Berman's thinking, which basically amounts to carte blanche for military intervention in the Middle East. "We should consider ourselves at war with muslim totalitarianism." The subtext: invade Iraq. To treat as one, as "deeply the same," different militant groups responding to very different contexts (often, if we're honest, a context of injustice) in different countries, is to embark on an ideological crusade; in its absolutism, it is deeply illiberal, and quite sinister.
