This guest is admittedly a beginner of philosophy. Like most who start, and who are proficient with language, time will tell if he escapes the preying 'word' philosopher at the table and allow the science philosopher to attend his think-tanks. That said, no matter how well intended 'word' philosophers spin their conceits--and to the opposition of Plato [R]--they lack correlation to public sites, things, and histories. Thanks to Plato, the gap that never goes away in philosophy is the one between science and humanities and this is a good thing.

[1] One Example of Long-term government in the West:

1830 English government went with a long-term [Royal] curriculum of humanities--to the opposition of Babbage

[tDoSiE]--and it resulted in England unprepared for WW2.

[2] The middle-way problem in a nut shell:

Berggruen's 'word' philosophy assumes that human 'intelligence' is more prominent than emotion-imagination. So it assumes it can solve Rorty’s problem of 'final vocabularies'--the words that humans cannot

finalize universally w/o aggression. Although Rorty wrote that the solution was 'liberal' doubt--doubt about one's own final vocabulary, this kind of irony is not universally applicable. There is no evidence that intelligence can overcome the attachment of emotion and imagination to a final vocabulary in those unwilling to seek it. History has examples of the opposite occuring. Camus called it our absurdity. Even Sartre could not see the pathos of communist Russia and enter Rorty's healing room in a way that might have casted doubt on the 'cause'. Camus did.

      [3] Existentialism:

Berggruen's philosophy lacks existential science and that misses the Babbage lesson: science, not humanities, prepares a country better for things that try to kill it.

Consider that there is a more immediate threat than 'climate change': Neil degrasse Tyson has pointed out that the universe is trying to kill us. The latest reminder of this was the meteor that hit Russia. The moon is also evidence of this. Intelligent behavior should sort out existential threats first. Resources and rocket tests

are limited and the humanities cannot help us. The first job of an 'intelligent' government is to provide its people with existential protection from any and all possible projectiles--whether from space or a hostile country.

Dear "Herr Berggruen", .."could you please use your influence and connections to help in the election of" National Socialist fascists again, in Germany and around the world???

      Aren't they simply wonderful people???

And will you try really hard to allow Obama to steal more money??

      Herr Berggruen,

could you please use your influence and connections to help in the election of Mr. Peer Steinbrück as the next Chancellor of Germany. The upcoming election in Germany in September 2013 is the most crucially important event for Europe and Germany in many decades in my opinion. Angela Merkel cannot stay in power if Europe is to socially and economically flourish and the European Union is to succeed. Vielen Dank an Sie :

Lincoln faced economic war. What was swept away with the WIND were the livelihoods of masters for whom slavery provided what little security there was. Slavery was so bad, it finally defeated itself.

We face religious war. Between EAST and WEST lies the Middle East. There, the enemy of both holds sway over a billion whose creed is to grow their population not their obedience to the golden rule. What are their values that transcend their dream of death first and happiness thereafter.

East and West have their plates full of hate and envy. Remove the Muslim billion and suffering remains little improved. Yet the issue of a Muslim Reformation is as hot as the one of Debt and Money.

Governance in the 21st Century has Muslim terrorists in its gun sights and corruption at home in its gut. Does it stand a chance?

California is home base? Why not -- at least for the moment? From Qualcomm in San Diego to Intel in Santa Clara, this state has need of governance to set an example. But it's really not looking for something like that. The state is looking for money presently manufactured in the District of Columbia. Nicolas Berggruen is embarked on journey that has come a great distance and has open vistas ahead. He works for his own charitable trust. And we are the object of his desire for the possible nearest perfection. We owe him not less than "thanks". If he becomes married with children hos focus will have to shift. But he knows that we all wish him well in all adventures and endeavors.

I had some more thoughts after viewing this conversation, that I would like to share here:

How can we create more good in the world more effectively?

Is it achieved through preventing evil and the the evil from gaining power or is it by encouraging good and the good to strive for power and influence?

I would naturally tend to prefer the latter, but how is this achieved?

What is more important in leadership intelligence or morality?

Again I would be inclined to the latter.

I think as mentioned more often as of late, and for good reason, we have to stop in my opinion to practice false and fake equivalency and bring morality more into the public conversation again and not shy away from using words and comparison like good and evil.

If somebody is a liar he or she needs to be called out as such and not be softly refereed to as an ''opinionated pundit''.

The 1st Amendment in my opinion protects the freedom of speech and rightly so, but it does not protect the freedom to lie and mislead people.

If there is no difference between good and evil or the existence of evil is being denied and evil is being sold to the public as good through repetition and propaganda what kind of of example is being set by this to our children and in turn what kind of world and society will they create because they were raised without any standards of morality.

These thoughts were partially inspired by listening to:

    11. Gelles  02/23/2013 07:57 AM Report

Nicolas Berggruen had the brains and luck to focus on cash flow early in his growth from son of an intelligent father to father of an intelligent world.

Cash flow is the key to using money as a stimulus to plenty; flow of words into sentences, is key to finding political consensus not fastened to great amounts of money or largely silent obedient forces in uniform killing all opponents by virtue of their weapons, tactics and superior play at war.

The words for which his dream is searching define the code of civilized conduct separating man from beast. In the WEST they spell out the Golden Rule and move from there to a compendium of thought on which brotherly love can rest if self is not destroyed by the devilish behavior of everyone else in the room.

Judging by the people's words who find expression in these archives (not the performers, but the audience,) there is little hope the brains behind the voice of the people are less devilish than benign.

FDR, in his Second Bill of Rights, said necessitous men and women were fodder for cruelty to fuel endless war and suffering. That security from want would be father to a better nation of cannibals on dry land. And so it will. But between NOW and THEN stand mountains of the wrong words and sentences: the words that would rather fight than switch, that hate you and love themselves. These are not the words that comprehend cash flow. They are just the opposite. They are the stuff of NO.

“The great transition of our time is from American-led globalization 1.0 to the interdependence of plural identities that characterizes globalization 2.0 as the dominance of the West recedes with the rise of the rest. A political and cultural awakening, amplified by social media, is part and parcel of this shift, and good governance must respond by devolving power and involving citizens more meaningfully in governing their communities. At the same time, we believe that accountable institutions must be created that can competently manage the global links of interdependence.”

      West recedes?

      Governments devolving power to citizens?

      Global links of interdependence?

Sounds like a UN believer. Good luck with nationalism.

    15. Gelles  02/23/2013 02:27 AM Report

Nicolas Berggruen has succeeded as an investor, holding on to a dream of great wealth that came true. He elevated that dream of great wealth for himself to a desire for intelligent political governance for the human race on earth of which we are a part.

He obviously does not accept that we are like the fish and mammals of the sea.

..... ..... He refuses to agree to a system where the most effective eaters consume the rest of us, as cannibals might, -- with no more meaning to this grand feast than the picture we observe as submariners who never venture on to dry land. There they would find cities and books, movies and money, none of which we can eat cooked or raw.

REMant is again the first human eater to misunderstand this yearning for intelligent governance. REMant is not exactly a cannibal, happy to accept things as they are. But if he were, he would always post the messages REMant offers (if, that is, he cared to think--as well as eat his way from birth to death.

I can only admire Nicolas Berggruen and wish that REMant disappeared from his accustomed spot at the head of our parade.

Berggruen has a vision of benign intelligent decentralized decision making in government, academia, and business, that enforces the Lincoln-like ideal of governance organized for the people--not just for the toughest and richest of them.

Berggruen sees his dream as constrained largely by politics, and not so much by holes in philosophical theory. I believe he also sees the potential for money to be on his side and not always only against him. This raises the question, "What is politics and/or political science?"

..... Does politics demand an alternative fate for humans -- different from that of cannibals?

People who race or skip to the last line in every book, tell us that after the last meal there will be be the great fire. In it all will be reduced to ashes and undifferentiated elementary dust. Whether we end as the cannibals we once were, or end as the artists we've become, will make no difference.

But we know there will be difference enough to justify our artistry and struggle to do more than eat.

Money is the answer now. Art will be the answer later. Only money invites the decentralization, Berggruen, Gelles and Lincoln demand. But in our era of hyper-mass production, there must be money enough to go around to allow us to prevent deflation, inflation and stagflation -- all at the same time.

The fat heads among us, who expect money to govern us rather than we govern money, worship debt and Mandarinism over intelligence, security and love.

Charlie Rose spoke of DEBT in the interview as though he did not know that with every debt incurred, a bad-debt is also born. Which one really counts?

..... It really makes no difference. The system that accounts for debt-free real money is the system that can support a purpose. The "a priori" rules that allow the idea of DEBT as "real" (not contingent on events) are false from every angle.

..... The American central bank is momentarily on our side. We may not hesitate and run to REMant for permission to bury our head in the sand just because his is. His is under it without any air to breathe.

Any person who has the talent and ability to achieve what Mr. Berggruen has ~ a thouroughly American achievement ~ and then give it away in order to pursue a "higher calling", a calling far more valuable and practical than say reclusion in a monastic enclave, deserves a standing ovation not pseudo-intellectual snipping. I would suggest that this is someone of the same ilk as our own founding fathers. If we would ALL use our minds and abilities to improve our collective condition rather than waste them on demeaning those who are actually trying to make a difference we might get out of this mess. I consider myself clearly a conservative (a Southern one at that) and do not agree with all of Mr Berggruen's positions but I most emphatically applaud him. Charlie Rose, that was one of the most interesting interviews I have ever seen ~ enough to draw me out to defend against the prior comment posted ~ something I NEVER do. Thank you.

    17. Max83  02/22/2013 09:55 PM Report

He definitely has that old money jet set vibe about him. But that does not have to be a bad thing if he still keeps in touch with the day to day life of ordinary people.

I wouldn't quite agree that Mr. Berggruen and Mr. Buffett are similar or that he is trying to emulate him.

They both come from very different backgrounds and therefore are very different animals in my opinion. To some degree I almost feel that Mr. Buffett and Mr. Gates strive to emulate the old money Elites of New York and Europe.

I agree though that Mr. Berggruen is most likely a proponent of Tory Democracy, which again is not necessarily a bad thing if done right and understood properly in my opinion. The challenge many people have is that they think of One-Nation Toryism as the same thing as Neo-conservatism. In my opinion they are very different in nature, but I think many neo-conservatives have tried to exploit One-Nation Toryism for their agendas and ideology.

Stay away from those neo-cons Mr. Berggruen, I agree with REmant on that.

I myself prefer the Social Democratic approach, but I doubt that this will ever succeeded or be accepted here in the USA.

As it was said before on the Charlie Rose Show: ''You can be a member of the Elite, without being elitist (actually in my opinion you have to be none-elitist in order to maintain a respected and thriving Elite over time).''

I think that is what Mr. Berggruen is trying to figure out through his think-tanks. How to be a benevolent Elite member.

As I said before I have no trouble with a benevolent Elite, so I wish him well in his pursuit of Elite Excellence :-)

For his further studies I can recommend to Mr. Berggruen the work of Michael St.Clair:

      ''Foreseen 2013 Michael Stclair''

      Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSVi9JwnsK4

      '' Published on Feb 22, 2013

He sees the global / universal conflict, with gold at $5,000 by 2017 and China declaring a gold standard based new world reserve currency. Time travel technology as an explanation of the holy grail quest is introduced as a new optic; and St.Clair points out that our purpose here on this planet is to reconnect with our home star knowing.''

and of course of Zbigniew Brzezinski:

    18. REMant  02/22/2013 05:17 PM Report

His think-tanks (three, I believe, for the world, for Europe, and for California) are full of monetarists, Keynesians and neocons - eye candy, probably only there for the gravy like your avg board of directors - and he's a big Obama supporter. So, of course, he's advocating socialism, like Buffett, whom, it appears, he emulates. But how that's different from Tory Democracy, I couldn't say. He may not be smart enough for philosophy, either. Until things hit the wall four or five yrs ago most Americans, including me, didn't realize how thoroughly corrupted the Europeans and Japanese had become in the last few fat decades, or how depleted our collective money belts really were. IMHO we richly deserve what we are getting, and his type are mere flies in this ointment.
