RE: COMMENTS MADE BELOW
It is sad to see the continued anti-Israel Jew-baiting by REMant. What is more sad is that his bigotry speaks for the bigotry of many and that he has an applauding audience.
(1) On the specific point claiming that there "are no 'civilians' in Israel, unless you count women and children...": many adult women do serve in the military; many adult men do not; many who serve are not of the Jewish faith and in fact are Muslims, Christians, Druse, and persons of other faiths; approximately half the population are civilians including children, the elderly, and others.
There are two sad things here in REMants view about Israel's "civilians": (a) he immediately devalues women and children, dismissing them as inconsequential, and (b) he pushes the view that all Israelis and Jews are by definition justified to be targets by virtue of their Judaism.
(2) As to the correct, but hard to sell point made by Shalom Freedman -- that Israel bends over backwards to avoid civilian Arab casualties, whereas the Arabs define all Jews as non-civilian by definition and therefore as targets for terror -- when the numbers of Arab civilians killed or maimed appear to the world to be disproportionate to the numbers of Israelis killed or maimed, there is still a sympathy for the perceived underdog of the conflict (the Arabs) though they number in the hundreds of millions, surround Israel, and place their missiles deliberately in the midst of their civilian populations. It wouldn't be a surprise, if it were discovered that Iran has it's most significant military stores, rockets, and nuclear facilities smack dab under the city of Tehran. And whether with respect to Iran or Gaza, whether civilians may be knowing and willing shields of terror or extorted to be so, it is still tragic that they suffer, even as it is tragic that terrorists and military personnel may suffer, as the killing and the suffering remains an existential horror.

Children who are abused grow up to become child abusers. The occupiers are bringing on their eventual destruction to be visited upon them by those they now abuse. A wheel of fortune!

First a minor note about Charlie Rose. He somehow always mispronounces Hebrew words. He can manage with other languages even doing well ,I believe, with Chinese names. Is it too difficult to say Ha-ah-retz? Ir ti sat 'Ni-tan-ya-hoo'?
Aluf Benn is on the very Left side of the Israeli political spectrum. He was a bit over- fair to Hamas, and did not outline the situation in a true way.
He did not even mention the major point that Hamas deliberately targets civilian population, and that they hide their military facilities within civilian facilities. He did not mention that Israel does everything possible to avoid causing civilian casualties. He did not indicate that the firing into the civilian population centers of Israel started this all. He did not mention that Israel supplies the civilian population of Gaza with its Electricity and Water and even treats the injured people of Gaza in its hospitals. A Democracy is at war with a totalitarian fundamentalist enclave.
PS The ignorant fossil anti- Semite who hides behind the alias REMant once again posts factual errors. One absolutely stupid one is at the outset of his remarks. He says that all male civilians in Israel are in the military. He does not seem to realize that Israel's Arab population are free of military service. So too most ultra- Orthodox Jews don't serve. There are hosts of others who do not serve for various reasons. A bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing and Remant's posts are in this sense very dangerous(though inane) indeed.

Of course, there ARE no "civilians" in Israel, unless you count women and children; virtually all the men being in the service or reservists. And the Jews have had no compunction about considering the Palestinians the same. In fact, as the last time this happened, they've killed far more.
Nov 8 an Israeli bullet killed a 13-year old boy playing soccer. Palestinians responded by blowing up a tunnel on the Gaza-Israeli border, wounding a soldier. Too, according to sources, Jabari had just received a draft of a permanent truce agreement with Israel and Jabari was a reasonable man in a position to act on it.
The early Israeli parliamentary elections, scheduled for January, are also blamed by some analysts, given the loss of Bibi's govt's popularity in last year's demonstrations, and with the US admin. But, IMHO, with a stronger coalition, Netanyahu is looking for a lot more than early elections: cover to attack Iran and force the US to back him up. He announced a plan to build 1200 more homes in East Jerusalem during our election, and at a minimum it would seem to be an attempt to make up for the loss of face occasioned by his reception in Washington earlier this year and the election result.
According to a CNN poll done over the weekend, 57% of Americans believe the military campaign in Gaza is justified, while only a quarter said it isn't. But while 74% of Republicans sided with Israel, and 59% of independents, only 41% of Democrats did. One would think therefore that a Democratic president not facing re-election and with all his folk telling him he's got an unprecedented mandate for everything from Reconstruction to gay marriage would have the backbone to tell Bibi where to get off, but so far there's been little sign of it.
Taking note of events elsewhere, the Israelis appear to have stepped up efforts to use social media for propaganda, even on sites like Aljazeera where a bumper crop of Zionists have suddenly appeared.
The fact is, however, that the Jews started more than a century ago to remove the Palestinians from the land they had occupied for centuries, because they've never fit in anywhere, and they've murdered and blackmailed to get to where they are today. And without a major war supported by Western allies they will be overrun at a minimum by the demographics, all in the Arab's favor.
