"Lincoln": best movie of 2012 and better than Argo.

      Thank you Doris.

    2. SharkswithfrikingLazers  04/22/2013 07:08 PM Report

Doris tells us Lincoln's huge conflict of letting soldiers die when he knew he could end the war. Every day the war continues Lincoln feels the deaths but he can’t let the war end until he has the 13th amendment to the Constitution.

Make any deal, Lincoln is LBJ back then.

"Thaddeus Stevens (who sleeps with a black woman): I don't hold with equality in all things, just equality before the law, nothing more."

So then letting soldiers die when you could get a surrender?

Making any deal to get a vote?

      Slimy?

Perhaps it is best said here:

"Thaddeus Stevens: The most liberating constitutional amendment in history, passed by corruption, aided and abetted by the purest man in America."

"Thaddeus Stevens: You claim you can trust them. But you know what the people are. You know the inner compass that should direct the soul toward justice has ossified in white men and women, north and south, unto utter uselessness though tolerating the evil of slavery. White people cannot bear the thought of sharing this country's infinite abundance with Negroes."

Yes Doris, with about 14,000 books on Lincoln you certainly found a new angle.

The last few months of Lincoln's life were monumental for this country.

The Team of Rivals aspect seems played down in the movie, although as you have said, their writings were of great benefit for your Herstory.

Love this lady, and her insight into Presidential history.

Thank you for having her on.

Barack Obama says: "Our Constitution is unfinished, and stained" (Philadelphia, 2008)

George Washington, a signer of that Constitution, battled a winter at Valley forge for Barack Obama.

Hah!! ..how LITTLE we "modern people" know or respect!

    6. NeilMacCallister  12/15/2012 01:31 AM Report

Hah!!! ..Veteren's Day is passed, ..and now it is "galley time"!!

Doris sits here, ..grinning off stage, ..in her Paiute "Bear Claw" necklace, and her neon-blue "I am a Democrat, Pleeeaaaase" old-school blazer, ..as she claims that Barack Obama is the reincarnation of Abraham Lincoln!!

      Hah!!!!!!

Abraham Lincoln said "Our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

Barack Obama says, "Give ME your money!!!"

Licoln said, "We have come for those who gave their lives that that nation might live".

Barack Obama says "I will fundamentally transform this nation!"

Into what? ..and what will he call his new nation? ..Doris??

    7. NeilMacCallister  11/11/2012 09:15 PM Report

Sorry, Captain! ..I didn't mean any of that!

I'm sure everything will come out just fine.

I'm saddled up and ready to go!

      Happy Veteran's Day!!

    8. NeilMacCallister  11/11/2012 07:24 PM Report

I'm already working 7 days a week, John, ..and I STILL can't keep up with all the bills the government is throwing onto my family!

Spend more money??? ..Obama has already spent 6 Trillion dollars MORE than I, my children, and my future grandchildren will EVER have!

How many MORE generations of Americans do you want to see in shackles, John???

      ***

Open any newspaper, John, ..do you see any job ads??? -- 4 years ago, there were many COLUMNS worth of job ads!

I know you've seen the Raley's picketers shouting down that 67 yr. old lady going into the store to buy her can of dinner -- they called her "scab"!

Applebie's Restaurants are cutting down worker hours so that they can keep as many of them on the payroll as possible after ObamaCare raises the cost of keeping employees.

More poverty is coming, John. And after Obama guts the military in January, we will be joining all the other starving defenseless nations -- and right back into the arena of World War.

      Our children deserved better!!

    9. output-based-money  11/11/2012 04:44 PM Report

      Neil~

"It would have been better if we just went back to work." YOU said that. Now say it out loud.

Going back to work in an economy deflated in a world where other nations want to export products and import jobs.

We have allowed deflation to kick our ass. Obama has allowed it -- and been rewarded with four more years. And I voted for him.

Romney was worse. He refused to promise to spend whatever it takes to put us back to work at decent wages. He came close to that. But his anti-union wage and union-bargaining power stance was enough for me to say NO to Romney and YES to the incumbent.

For us to make the reforms I want, to raise labor's bargaining power and middle class security standards is not rocket science. It is simple adoption of the Second Bill of Rights and enough output-based money to pay their its nominal cost. Of course, we would have to emerge triumphant in high tech manufacturing that caters to our domestic market.

Obama is looking for export markets. I disagree with him on that.

Tom Friedman said we have to OBEY market forces. I say we have to MANAGE markets to protect our incomes and our jobs. Friedman is a goose -- if he does not look to Krugman, Bernanke and Abba Lerner's writing to put purpose in our systems and curb dogma to a minimum.

We are told today that YOU and John Gelles must reach a compromise on differences. OK -- I offer you zero taxes on re-invested profits by billionaires and others. You must offer me spending enough to remain an example to all democracy that people can rule themselves without reading established law and customs as a suicide pact by morons.

    10. NeilMacCallister  11/11/2012 02:05 PM Report

No, John, ..another WWII is NOT the best answer to the current reprising of Democrat-led Depressions.

It would have been better had we chosen to put down our food-stamps, unemployment checks, government pensions, and "single-payer" flu shots -- and just went back to work at maintaining the economically-successful society of our past.

American voters apparently have decided that was just too much for our country to ask of us.

Wilson and Roosevelt have won election once again, ..and now WWIII is on its way.

      Our children deserved better.

    11. output-based-money  11/10/2012 12:25 PM Report

"We must imagine what it would be like if everything was moving again" -- as it moved in WW II when we all were in the armed forces or working to win the war.

Doris and Charlie implicitly agreed that if we could do as asked for above, we would be OK -- and likely to be again the arsenal for peace and freedom as we were the arsenal of democracy to save civilization -- with Russia, the British Empire and all our allies.

This arsenal would supply (with all civilized nations as partners) the needs to prevent another world war and prevent tyranny and terror too.

What is missing for this to happen? Of course, the unity that Hitler and Hirohito created with their armed might. But we also had money constrained only by the physical limits imposed on our production potential. Naturally, our strategic plans and execution of armed might counted as much as money.

So today, we need money to match output and not debt.

      What say you?

    12. davidhamber  11/10/2012 04:11 AM Report

In 1936, Roosevelt received 523 electoral votes or 98.49% of the electoral vote, the highest percentage since 1820. Roosevelt won 60.8% of the national popular vote, the second highest popular-vote percentage won since 1820. In terms of the popular vote, it was the third biggest victory since the election of 1820. A FAR CRY FROM THIS RECENT ELECTION!!

    13. NeilMacCallister  11/09/2012 08:19 AM Report

So, ..Ms. Goodwin believes Barack Obama is Abraham Lincoln? ..Why??

Lincoln fought to SAVE a Nation from crashing,..

..Obama fights just as hard to send it over a fiscal cliff.

Are these men's struggles REALLY "equal"?????

    14. tabs  11/08/2012 08:08 PM Report

Ms Goodwin comments, "That perhaps President Obama should learn a short hand language where a few words say a lot." In other words, words that will stick in the minds eye like oatmeal sticks to the ribs. Something that leaves a lasting IMAGE in the mind that coveys both emotional and intellectual meaning. In actuality imagery and symbols that work just below the conscience level or subliminally. One likes to refer to this talent as being "crystal blue persuasion." The "crystal" for the clarity of purpose, "blue" for understanding the images and symbols of the subconscious and the "persuasion" as to what your trying to accomplish.

Four Billion Dollars A Day Makes Last Nights Conversation Irrelevant.

One has been pondering ones own comments about Obama's victory speech. There is one word in a phrase that Obama used that keeps rattling around in ones mind and that is the word "MESSY" which Obama used in description of the process to move "forward" legislativily. One has said many times previously that Obama views emotions as being "messy." The question then becomes, will President Obama enter into his "messy" emotions and become ENGAGED emotionally in the political process? One suspects if this is so, then President Obama will be setting aside his long cherished "socially conscience" beliefs in favor of a I may not like it, but I am going to do it pragmatism. Then one would say welcome to the REAL TIME WORLD Mr President.

However Mr President Trust has to be earned, and after the Class Warfare rhetoric of the campaign and the last 4 years of governing your trust quoient is just about non existent with 50% of Americans. That is a lousy record and you have no one to blame but yourself. There maybe intelligence behind your decisions but there certainly has been no sagacity.

Last night's program with Doris Kearns Goodwin should be sent to the White House. I believe that it was one of the best summary of what President Obama failed to do in his first term.

Last night's program with Doris Kearns Goodwin should be sent to the White House. I believe that it was one of the best summary of what President Obama failed to do in his first term.

    18. REMant  11/08/2012 12:32 PM Report

Doris certainly must understand a little about rehabilitation. But empathy and several bucks will get you a latte. Tho, of course, presidents nowadays can extend as much sympathy as they like. The Fed picks up the tab. There's no need to go out and get drunk, and there wasn't during the Depression, altho no doubt the end of Prohibition was as popular as the free money. But neither this nor logrolling is any longer sustainable altho the realization seems not yet to have reached Maryland Democrats.

The 1936 election map actually looked very much like the 2012 election map, with the parties reversed and as yet largely undeveloped Florida and West Coast excluded. The GOP vote was concentrated in New England and the Northwest territory settled by it, esp the cities there. Like Mitt, the GOP ran on a platform of compassionate conservatism. It even avoided calling for a return to the gold standard over their candidate's wishes. "When accused of stealing the Democratic platform of 1932," contemporary journalist John T Flynn related, "the Republicans replied 'Why not? The Democrats have no more use for it. Moreover it is in perfectly good condition - it was never even used.'" He went on: "Their chief reliance was upon the charge that the President had usurped the powers of Congress, attacked the integrity of the courts, invaded the constitutional prerogatives of the states, attempted to substitute regulated monopoly for free enterprise, forced through Congress unconstitutional laws, filled a vast array of bureaus with swarms of bureaucrats to harass the people and breed fear in commerce and industry, discouraged new enterprises and thus prolonged the depression, had used relief to corrupt and intimidate the voters and made appeals to class prejudice to inflame the masses and create dangerous divisions." Sound familiar?

FDR's abandonment of the gold standard, subsidies and make-work programs had bought off the South and much of the rest of America. "Roosevelt over the radio said the whole question was after all a simple one - just ask yourself one question. Are you worse off now or better off than when we took office? He repeated the employment figures on the day of his inauguration and during this campaign. As to the public debt he said we borrowed eight billions but we have increased the national income by 22 billions. Would you borrow $800 a year if thereby you could increase your income by $2200, he asked... And though the figures were false and the reasoning even more so it was practically impossible for a Republican orator to reason with voters against these seemingly obvious and plausible figures."

After re-election FDR did, however, approach Wall St on the advice of Morgenthau, with the news that balanced budgets and higher reserve requirements were now desirable, and was scoffed, the budget running in the red at the time to the tune of $300 million a month. Keynesian historians to this day calling this the mistake leading to the 1937 crash. So the New Dealers returned to painting the wealthy as bogeymen and running up the debt.

Rapprochement is unlikely to happen this time either, since Wall St and the urban areas are no longer the truly prosperous part of the country, and the House remains in its hands. The admin has already given as much money as it dares to the financiers. And yet you have the president making the same speech yesterday as he did four years ago, and four years before that,(a fact apparently forgotten by Ms Goodwin and Mr Rose). Obama also reaching out to Romney much as FDR had tried to co-opt Progressive internationalist Republicans like Landon, himself, who rejected him calling him a worse threat to liberty than fascism, and running mate Frank Knox, made Sec'y of the Navy, because like Hitler, FDR had discovered the magic of military spending.

And no sooner had he been re-elected then FDR began implementing the Wagner Act and trying to pack the Supreme Court, two much more likely causes for the '37 debacle, along with the inflation behind that bogus math, and the thinning of the stock mkt caused by an increase in capital gains taxation. No doubt made worse by the crackdown on insider trading, which in panics has its usefulness, as well as, an increase in margin requirements, both designed to keep such things from happening. And, yes, Obama has several irons in the fire.

Since this crisis began nation after nation in Europe has turned to socialism. And I am also put in mind of Lyman Beecher: "There is no despotism so terrible as a popular despotism under the names and forms of liberty, where ignorance and prejudice, and passion and irreligion, and crime are wielded by desperate political ambition and a corrupting foreign influence; and if ever our liberties perish, it will be by the explosion of the volcanic power of the European and American populace, and foreign influence and American demagogues in bad alliance, who will ride in the whirlwind and direct the storm. This I am aware is strong language. But strong language is demanded; for this giant nation sleepeth and must be awaked."
