First of all, how is it possible to not have seen a single Denzel Washington movie? The man has been a constant and highly regarded force in American film for the past two decades. He has multiple Oscars. Secondly, and more importantly, you seem to be under the misunderstanding that all drugs are the same, and that all drug users are homeless crackheads. Your use of the phrase Afro-Americans is also troubling, as it was 2012 when you posted your comment. I assure you that there are many people in very professional jobs who have serious substance abuse issues. Cocaine is widely used to this day in the financial services sector, and the rate of alcoholism across all socioeconomic categories is staggering. I assure you, many of the people you run into every day are addicts, and some may be in positions of serious importance.

I've never seen one of Denzel Washington's movies, although I have to say he certainly looks this part, and I won't be starting now, not least because I think it highly improbable that a pilot with a really serious addiction issue could also maintain his status as a pilot, so either there's an issue, or there's not. In a related matter, I read an op-ed just a few days ago by an academic, calling himself an "ethicist," who argued that "performance-enhancing" drugs should be seen as coming with the territory in professional and Olympic-level sports, no worse than any new piece of equipment, or technique. I imagine some in the Charlie Rose Brain Series might agree, but IMHO if that's the import of this film, it also sends an undesirable message to Afro-Americans. I'm thinking, too, that giving away any part of the plot is a mistake.
