Robert Kaplan usually has a solid and unbiased grip on the subjects he treats. That`s has been my overall impression. This revival of geography for its own inner merits, both at the very abstract and also most concrete level, is no doubt very important and Kaplan does bring it about with his new book. Yet, although taking advantage from the material produced by a solid, all-embracing view of geography can lead to dangerous generalizations, specially when the country-for- country birds-eye view approach tends to be superficial in its assessments given the multiplicity of other factors which play sometimes most crucial roles. I also think that Kaplan should devote more time in the analysis of the Russian geopolitical though, the Eurasianists in particular, but also the other schools from the country, as geography in its most direct and crude approach plays for them always a very significant, central role.Besides his analysis of the Russian territorial case and civilizational/geopolitical historical reality could be better...
All in all, an important book dealing with an ancient truth, although having short-comings due to the very preponderance that "truth"assumes to have. Charlie Rose missed the opportunity for asking more pertinent questions. That`s a pity.

Yes, Mexico and Canada.
We are told that there are 33M middle class in Canada within 100 miles of our border.
Then go south and Mexico has 1/3 the population of the US. HOWEVER, in Mexico they are much, much much poorer.
Mexico's living standards are so poor compared to ours there is no greater difference between two bordering countries except for North and South Korea.
The US average age is 37 while it is 25 in Mexico. So their country is younger and growing.
We are told the northern third of Mexico is controlled by Drug Cartels.
Mexico makes Americans extreme and emotional. It is a hot button issue.
So Charlie, what is the conclusion? More shows on Israel of course.

SouthAmerica: Now “Operation Clueless or Gulf War III” it has been underway.
The United States likes to give cute names for its military adventures around the world such as “Operation Desert Storm or Gulf War I” in 1990 – 1991. Then came "Operation Iraqi Freedom or Gulf War II” in 2003 – 2012. And now “Operation Clueless or Gulf War III” it has been underway.
The name "Operation Clueless" is very important in this case, because it defines what the United States is trying to accomplish in the Middle East.
The name “Operation Clueless” is also important, because when you don't have a clue about what you are doing any result it will be O.K.

By the way, Robert Kaplan should write a book how corruption affect the economic development of a country, then he can give examples of corrupt government from around the world and the different ways that corruption affects economic development.

"Corruption: Brazil vs. United States"
October 11, 2012
SouthAmerica: I just posted this info on Brazzil magazine in response to a question from one of the readers of that magazine.
The reader was surprised that the Brazilian justice system is in the process of punishing and sending to prison some very powerful people in Brazil regarding the “Mensalão scandal” of few years ago.
Brazzil magazine: Reply to Joao da Silva
Ricardo: Joao, at the end of the day the “Mensalão scandal” in Brazil is about corruption at a level of
“nickels and dimes.”
The “Mensalão scandal” is described as: “the boldest, and most scandalous case of corruption ever to have taken place in Brazil.”
Basically we are talking about a small number of people who participated on this scandal (about 40 people), and a very small amount of money – we are talking about “nickels and dimes.”
And surprisingly the high powered people involved on this scandal are all going to end up in prison in Brazil.
Contrast that with the most corrupt country on earth where the well connected people are free do do anything they want with no chance of any of them ending up in prison.
Today, the United States has the justice system of a “Banana Republic”, and the hot shots of Wall Street and senior US government officials from the Treasury Department can act with impunity.
In the United States we had the biggest financial scandal of all time that affected and still affecting millions of people around the world, and the US justice system has done nothing about all the widespread corruption that has been going on in Wall Street for many years.
In Brazil they are sending to prison the powerful people for a scandal regarding “nickels and dimes.”
In contrast the “Banana Republic of the United States” has done nothing regarding the corruption and fraud regarding trillions of US dollars.
Here is what is at the core of the problems regarding the US political and economic problems: "In contrast, the United States has a much more polished and sophisticated corruption system called lobbying." Here is what I wrote on this subject about 2 years ago:
Brazzil Magazine – April 23, 2010
Brazil and the New Economic Miracle. The US Has a Lot to Learn!- Written by Ricardo C. Amaral
...And if you don't believe me that the US economic system is in deep trouble and beyond repair, then you don't need to look any further than what has transpired in the United States since the financial meltdown of 2008. The US financial system ended up in intensive care, and almost died a quick death. And what has happened in the United States since then regarding any efforts by Congress to try to fix the problems that caused the collapse of the US and global financial system in 2008?
As usual, Americans learned nothing from these past fiascos, and if anything the problems are becoming even bigger today with much bigger surviving financial institutions that are fighting very hard against any government regulation of their business, and they use their powerful lobbying connections to fight very hard to keep things as they were before the last financial meltdown.
How dumb can you be? And next time, when the coming collapse and financial meltdown become a reality once again, then the safety net of the US government won't be there. This time around Wall Street has exhausted the financial resources of the United States.
Remember, since the Wall Street bailouts of 2008, the scoundrels of Wall Street have consistently been milking all the US government resources to the bone, and they also have been putting in place a structure for another major US government bailout of Wall Street in the future - for US taxpayers to pay for the bets that went sour for Wall Street.
When it comes to forms of corruption, in Brazil they still have a crude and old system and they use terms that include: bribery, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, patronage, graft, and embezzlement. In contrast, the United States has a much more polished and sophisticated corruption system called lobbying. And the American lobbying system works in a very efficient way by buying favors directly from the politicians through campaign contributions.
US Economic and Financial System Is Incapable of Meaningful Change
Let me give you another major example that would explain why the US economic and financial system is doomed, and incapable of meaningful change.
...Anyway, the American economic and financial system is in shambles, and it does not have a prayer to get better any time soon, because of the way lobbying and the free market work.
Conclusion
Brazil is ready for the new economic miracle of this new century, and it is prepared to lift the Brazilian economy to new heights; to materialize and make a reality one of the great economic development stories of the 21st Century.

BloombergBusinessweek – October 10, 2012
“Brazil: Majority of top court convicts ex-top aide”
Jenny Barchfield – Bloomberg
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The one-time right-hand-man of popular former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was found guilty on a corruption charge by a majority of 10 Supreme Court justices Tuesday, who ruled he orchestrated a widespread cash-for-votes scheme that came to light seven years ago.
Six of the eight justices who voted found Jose Dirceu guilty of "active corruption" by organizing the scheme to buy congressional support for Silva's policies through regular payments to legislators in exchange for their votes. Two more justices will vote Wednesday, producing a formal verdict, but a majority is all that's needed for conviction.
The case is known in Brazil as "mensalao," or big monthly allowance, for the sums of up to $10,000 handed over to politicians.
Widely seen as the biggest political corruption scandal in Brazil's history, the case has done little to tarnish the reputation enjoyed by Silva, who left office after two 4-year terms on Jan. 1, 2011, with an 87 percent approval rating. Silva, who remains a powerful political force in Brazil, faces no accusations of wrongdoing. A poll by the Datafolha polling institute said earlier this year that 57 percent of Brazilians would like to see Silva return to the presidency in 2014.
Dirceu, a former revolutionary turned federal lawmaker once seen by many as a potential Brazilian president, was an early member of the leftist Workers Party and served as party president from 1995 through 2002, when he was named chief of staff upon Silva becoming Brazil's first working-class leader. In that role Dirceu was the second most-powerful man in Latin America's largest nation before the scandal broke in 2005 and forced him from the Cabinet.

I am going to mention in all websites that I had posted that information that the fact that my posting has been deleted from the Elite Trader Forum which gives even more relevance to the subject of that posting. And I will follow up with an actual article about this subject to put the spotlight on the state of government justice between Brazil and the United States.
The reaction to my posting such as my article being deleted by the Elite Trader manager gives me an important feedback - that tells me that I hit a nerve and a subject that Americans are afraid of talking about.

SouthAmerica: I know that Americans like to make the connection between democracy, a free market economy, and capitalism – and if you adopt this formula the result is economic growth and prosperity.
But I have a problem with these simplistic generalizations, since there are too many variables affecting the economy of most countries. And when people inject religion to the mix, then the problem becomes almost impossible for people to even discuss it in an intelligent manner.
But regarding the subject of democracy - Robert Kaplan wrote a very interesting article for “The Atlantic Monthly” published in December 1997 “Was Democracy Just a Moment?” - that is very relevant today mainly when there is someone who has the crazy idea that he has to spread "Democracy" all over the world.
I did read this article a number of times over the years, and I recommend that other people also read it. I hope you will get as much from this article as I did.

Brilliant! I am blown away by the high quality of this week's guest on the Charlie Rose Show.
I have been a student of Feng Shui for over a decade, a form of spiritual geography also known as Geomantics. It absolutely confirms everything Mr. Kaplan is saying.
If you are interested in this topic this is a great introductory documentary into the subject:

Right now we are in what is known as Period 8 Feng Shui, which is very good for New York City. It started in 2004 and will last till 2023:
''Northeast direction being auspicious in feng shui period 8 is usually interpreted as the house absorbing more luck if the main door of the house faces Northeast, as well as the energy benefit that comes from facing Northeast while working, for example. If Northeast happens to be one of your best feng shui directions, then the benefits are double.
Globally, it is considered that in the period 8 the Northeast countries, such as Japan or China, as well as cities, such as, for example, New York, will see more success and improvements.'' Taken from: http://fengshui.about.com/od/theoryhistory/qt/fengshuiperiod8.htm
I personally use and follow Buddhist Tantric Black Hat Sect Feng Shui which I consider the most powerful and effective Feng Shui. Here some very good videos on it. This is for already experienced practitioners:

This is just pure genius????!!! Somehow one thinks that Attila the Hun understood these concepts long before Mr Kaplan ever did. One has long said that it isn't "illegal immigration" from Mexico but a MIGRATION from Mexico. Further Mr Kaplan states that India and China both have a "new" "ARC" of influence in the trans Himalayan region that didn't exist 50 years ago. "New?" Does Mr Kaplan forget that India and China fought a short war over the region in 1961? To cut ones diatribe short these ideas that Mr Kaplan is writing about are nothing new. It just goes to show you that everything old becomes new again.

Physical features matter, but it can't mean a lot of ppl believe it, or the book wouldn't I presume have been written. In doing "19th century geography," as became clear when he started talking about politics, he has more in mind resurrecting 19th c prejudice. Things like southern ppls are lazy and prone to absolutism. It also ignores the past in places like central Asia, China, Egypt, even Africa. Nevertheless, I'm sure terrain and climate have something to do with mores and I wouldn't discourage it especially to liberal friends like Jared Diamond prone to go too far in the other direction.
But I have to ask what part of the colonial US had vast inland waterways? It was the absence of them, which made the Mississippi so important, and helped divide the political parties.
Germany has long been noted by Anglo-American writers for its lack of nationalism, but the same was true of the French, and the Italians. Britain, on the other hand, was very early united, tho it can hardly be said to have done much to promote real democracy, especially not to those who complained of the Norman yoke. It had little in the way of inland waterways, too. Ready access to the sea does not a trading nation make, nor that alone for success, and Germany and this country are two good examples.
The question in places like Mexico is what is causing the fertility increase, which has to be that they are becoming poorer in the course of industrialization.
This theory is complete nonsense when it comes to virtual nations.
