We are told here that both parties feel if the other wins it will be the end of the world as they know it.
"The largest party in America is neither the Democrats nor Republicans; it’s actually the party of non-voters.
About 52 percent of Americans, 53 percent, depending upon your presidential election or whether it’s a presidential election or a non-presidential election, most of them do not vote."

So there you go fellas!
Individualism versus Community is a false argument because the majority of America is non-voters.
Charlie, this is something you might want to raise at the table.

The two conventions were a joy to watch and compare. The Republican convention emphasized the failure of the President to accomplish the reforms (that would have prevented deflation of middle class capital assets (home and 401 K portfolio values) and ordinary internal commerce on which jobs depend.
Of course this failure was wholly due to the power in the House of Representatives of the Republican morons who took over leadership of the Republican majority in that House.
So what joy did the Republican convention offer? ANSWER: Romney's wife's address.
The Democrats brought intelligence and fighting spirit to the election. All but Clinton's speech were magnificent -- especially that from the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Clinton was boring.
What sadness did the Democrats offer? ANSWER: They did not address free trade and how it had to be re-defined to protect American jobs first and low cost consumer products only if high wage jobs here are established for as long as possible. Additionally, the Democrats must promise the high defense spending demanded by our absolute need to prevent WW III or IV.
If it were not for the polls, I would foresee a huge victory for Obama-Biden in November. As it is I will be content with a victory in a tight race.

The argument of Mr. Dionne is that the Republicans have become more extreme while the Democrats have largely remained the same. But is that true? It seems to me that the Democratic Party is far more radicalized on economic and especially social issues.

GLICK, I agree that Charlie Rose interrupts too much but perhaps it is because LIKE YOU his most recent guests HAVE NOTHING USEFUL TO SAY...
GLICK, you remind me how much I miss MICHEAL CRICHTON...I miss him because he always had something intelligent to say... he always seemed pleasantly surprised by Charlie Rose questions...he would pause as if to process the question or statement and then he always had something insightful to say or something useful to add to Charlie Roses' talking points...yeah I miss him - the world is a lesser place for his passing....
cheers, richard.

These posts are very discouraging. I hope Charlie doesn't waste his time looking at them. I love his programs. I just wish he'd stop interrupting so much. It seems as if, often, he wants to show he knows something. We know you know, Charlie. Let the speakers speak.

The ISSUES:
a. Rugged Individualism versus Cooperative Rule-intense Systems to achieve known measurable objectives.
b. Free Trade and Laissez Faire -- two ideals that never worked and never will.
THE solutions:
The Obama agenda, achieved in part by both law and exective order, financed by private money, public debt-based (conventional) investment capital (cash-money), and QE from the Bernanke Fed (output-based fiat money).

Before the Democratic Party convention is over, maybe someone will be looking for a real way to solve our economic problems. It could be more important than the Interstate Highway system put in place under President Eisenhour starting sixty years ago. I would challenge either set of politicians to avoid being the party left behind.
There is a massive area of under-used land in America which could be the basis of a powerful new economy simply by establishing a national water distribution system whereby flood and drought would be controlled and universal irrigation would be put in place. This would result in a new level of employment making immigration a manageable issue and a massive increase in export products making the trade imbalance a thing of the past. Not only woulod it be important to establish such a capability on under-used land, it would end the yearly weather roulette game played by farmers in every part of the country.
This infrastructure concept inspired invention of the Miastrada Dragon that can be seen on youtube. This is a tractor that would make the farm labor acceptable to all sorts of folks, and even be a way to give disabled veterans a new opportunity.

Where are the liberal intellectuals in America? if E J Dionne is the best they have then American liberalism is in deep trouble..he confuses community with government led society...this is a dumb argument in a digital global world...the world is the challenge for America in C21st and yet Dionne would have Americans navel gazing...Dionne is about redistribution of wealth but has no idea about wealth generation .... Clinton was about both wealth redistribution and wealth creation - its the economy stupid!
Dionne talks about progressives - the problem is the Democratic Party under Obama is regressive and backward looking...backward looking because he puts his ideology ahead of practical politics that would boost the economy - the Keystone pipeline is a good example of ideology over practical politics and economics... Dionne does not understand the economy at all...
if Obama appeals to the modern politics it is because Americans, in the main, see themselves as victims...in a sense they are because America is in sharp decline under Obama...
Obama is an ideologue who has cobbled together a coalition of young women, gays, shrinking middle class, unions, under-employed, environmentalists (rich and famous), etc...he has no political framework for going forward if the economy turns around and these victims find their own pathways to success...
most of this discussion is junk time philosophy - the type of talk you would have in a pub with a lot, a lot, a lot of beers....
surely America can do better than this?
at lest Paul Ryan takes on discussion of the $US 16 Trillion debt - Dionne does not even know that it exists and that it will hurt future generations unless corrected...President Clinton knows about the debt and he would never have let this happen...
bring on the Romney administration and then we might find some other intellectuals to interview...
cheers, richard.

There's no division between individualism and community. There is among Liberalism, liberalism (or Whiggism) and conservatism (or Toryism). The Post has consistently wanted to see a Republican candidate and party the same as the Democratic, and I am not sure just how Progressive they are. I'm sure tho they have no fondness for Liberalism. For a long time they refused to even mention Ron Paul, until they found their Comments columns and Ombudsman's mailbox filled up with complaints about it. But that shouldn't surprise in a place in the business of govt.
