Ricardo_Amaral:
The NAM in Iran impacts unresolved Middle East trends and global prospects for peace in the remainder of the 21st Century.
Nuclear proliferation, human rights in ME nations, and the prospects for peace between Palestine (and its supporters) and Israel.
I take it Ricardo that you believe the NAM will find a path to peace (or war) in the ME (and beyond?) favoring human rights in the ME and global prosperity. You may also believe the USA is not aligned with the trends you favor.
The USA, on the other hand, and Israel, appear to favor real human rights for all in the ME and global prosperity.
The objectives of all these peoples and diplomats are similar -- but the existence of Israel as a Jewish State remains a sticking point. "Non aligned" and "United" nations are not all united with Israel on its right to exist.
There are other differences among all these nations. The USA represents a peaceful solution all the peoples of earth have proved is possible. No other nation represents such solution better than the USA. Or do you nominate a better place based on your forecast for the future?
This thread on Charlie Rose is more about prosperity inside the USA. But global prosperity is also its responsibility.
If we compare Israel with each of the NAM nations, we find its score on human rights is higher than most, if not the highest on earth. If we define human rights to include both political rights and FDR's Second Bill of Economic Rights, Israel would score higher than the median score for all the aforesaid nations.
The case against Israel is clear and is not fair. Iran and North Korea are disgraces to the human race. Israel is not.

Syrian journalists say some Western and Arabic satellite news channels are fabricating events to accuse the Syrian army of attacking and terrorizing civilians. They refer to the recent case of Mohammad Salim Kabbani who used to go on live on Al-Jazira , Al-Arabia and Orient TV channels as the spokesman for the foreign-backed militant group calling itself the Free Syria Army.
He appeared on Arab media outlets as if he was in the city of Homs while he was in Northern Lebanon city of Tripoli. Mohammad salim Kabbani confessed 3 weeks ago in an interview on the Syrian Television that he was fabricating events to get money from those media outlets in return.

Morsi, who was elected in June and consolidated his power this month by dismissing top military leaders, is seeking to introduce himself to a wider world ahead of a trip to Iran - the first by an Egyptian leader in three decades.
In a commentary, China's official Xinhua news agency said Morsi's visit was a sign he wanted to shift the country's traditional diplomatic focus away from the West and that China stood ready to help in Egypt's economic recovery.

Editor's Note: The following is an excerpt from Robert D. Kaplan's new book which will be released September 11, 2012, “The Revenge of Geography: What the Map Tells Us About Coming Conflicts and the Battle Against Fate”.
The most important facts about Iran go unstated because they are so obvious. Any glance at a map would tell us what they are. And these facts explain how regime change or evolution in Tehran -- when, not if, it comes -- will dramatically alter geopolitics from the Mediterranean to the Indian subcontinent and beyond.

For me its jobs jobs jobs jobs and nothing else.
If you have a job you stand a good chance of having health insurance, and you can have savings as well as stimulate the economy, and this means more homes being bought which with property taxes make for a healthy local economy, schools, police and fire protection. Which also produces taxes which can be used to help with the horrid national debt, as well as pay for government programs that help the most vulnerable in society.
In this 'reality' tv era its sad that some people, think someone like President Obama who talks great and has style etc is someone to take serious, versus someone like Mitt Romney who doesn't flaunt, but is humble and reserved much like many of us were raised to believe was a positive character issue. Good grief how many naysayers have any idea what it takes to be successful in business? And why the nastiness because Mitt Romney has great wealth?
John Kerry and his wife have more homes and I believe more wealth. Yet I don't recall you guys in the media talking about that when he ran for President.

Syria proxy war: 'Back to good old colonial games' – August 28, 2012
http://youtu.be/wtTKAep0Ti0
Paris has made its latest move in the political gambit over the Syrian crisis. French President Francois Hollande has called on Syria's opposition to form a provisional government, saying France won't hesitate to recognise it. Our correspondent Tesa Arcilla reports on what this means for the conflict.
************
In a nutshell: The message that French President Francois Hollande is sending to the world is that remember the 2005 riots in France when France exploded with riots of African Muslim immigrants.
As of 2008, the French national institute of statistics IN
SEE estimated that 11.8 million foreign-born immigrants and their direct descendants (born in France) lived in France representing 19% of the country's population.
These foreign-born immigrants came from about 20% of Algerian origin, 15% Moroccan or Tunisia origin, 8% Turkey origin, and the balance came from sub-Saharan Africa (Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Libya, Mauritania), and also from other European countries.
French President Francois Hollande is saying that it is "O.K." for these people to start riots and a new revolution in France, and create a new government organized by these revolutionaries – to make it legitimate all you need is for a few African countries to recognize the new group of revolutionaries as the new legitimate government of France.
What these immigrants are waiting for in France to start a new French Revolution?
According to French President Francois Hollande there's nothing wrong with that.
The French love a good revolution – here we go again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We hear Romney must have Florida but with Paul Ryan he probably can't get Florida.
We are told Obama has a stable floor and durability but not enough to win.
Romney needs Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania but Obama has Ohio (Rattner saved the day) and Romney needed to have Portman to try and win Ohio.
The cherry on all this is that the race is down to 9 to 10% of the electorate.
Too bad we don't have a better system where an election can be called now (like the Brits) and work can begin as soon as possible on the fiscal cliff and the other pressing issues.
(By the way, on the split television screen perhaps Romney, the hurricane and also add a shot of the vanishing arctic ice.)

RE: "THE RHINOCEROS IN THE ROOM"
I may eat my own earlier words, after listening to Ann Romney and Chris Christie speak. The prior speeches at the convention tonight were largely unremarkable or negatively remarkable, save the excellent rhetoric of Artur Davis. Santorum was shameless, and Kasich ruined his otherwise significant presentation by opening with his comment about being "sick and tired of black-eyed peas". But Ann Romney and Chris Christie established credibility for Mitt Romney in a way that challenges us all to overlook Mitt Romney's gaffes. Joe Biden can only hope that he himself may benefit from such excellent review of his strengths and qualities that as VP he does not bring President Obama down. Whatever the facts and policy truths may be, the Republican Convention is off to a very good start in presenting it's Story from the key slogan "We Built It" to the clear message of Ann Romney as the woman and wife behind the Great Man and to the clear message of Chris Christie that Mitt Romney will call on America to be willing to make sacrifices. It is not entirely clear yet from Chris Christie just what those sacrifices must be and why or whom in what circumstances, but, it is worthy of respect that Chris Christie has broached that conversation with America, and if the details of such portended sacrifices are brought to the clear light of the political conversation, then great service shall be done to the nation.

oops... my opening sentence got scrambled...I meant to say....
I love America and Americans...I am not in love with the future for America that 4 more years of Barack Obama will bring to the country or the world... I can not believe that even the liberal press gathering you have at this round table can be so calm and unaffected by the prospect of another 4 years of Obama...indeed they seem to be promoting it ... perhaps they are just too close the Obama Campaign...it is a pity that these people are so well placed in the American media that is covering this critical election...Obama is the worst President since Jimmy Carter, for very different reasons... both Obama and Carter failed to deliver on hope and change...both Obama and Carter will be blips on American history...but the damage that Obama can do on the way to oblivion is enormous...
there is a rule in politics - expect the opposite from a President to the established positions he or she might put to the electorate before gaining the White House... Nixon embraced China...Reagan began a missile defense build up that brought an end to the cold war...Kennedy began the US engagement in Vietnam - even after the failure or bay or pigs...H W Bush contained the war against Iraq to the re-establishing the initial borders...W H Bush caused the 2008 financial crisis with his reckless spending of wars and a phony housing boom (too much liquidity in the $US and too much borrowing)... Obama brought gridlock to Washington and the Beltway not the bi-partisan 'change you can believe in'...
the best scenario is Obama will continue to deliver his failure to govern in the same way as he has for last 4 years ...BUT what if he does new things? the propensity of Obama to destroy America is huge - we don't know what he has in mind or in store for America because all he has to do at present is attack Romney with the help of Charlie Rose and his gathered helpers here....
cheers, richard.
richard-lipscombe 08/28/2012 06:33 PM Report
I love America but not the future America that you Charlie Rose and these reporters you have gathered here are happy to accept Obama if not applaud him for his failures. WOW!
Why should I care, I don't live in your mess I live in Asia and we are booming...I care because my son has just taken up an academic and athlete scholarship at a US College...he will bring brains, enthusiasm, brilliance, youth, etc to America from outside as he starts his tertiary education in your country...BUT people like him will not want to stay in your country after College because he hates mediocrity and failure...and take it from me, Obama's America is mediocre and a failure...BUT none of these commentators see it... they are all happy that OBAMA is winning as they see it and furthermore these people are here willingly promoting the President...
I still contend that Romney will win this election because I still believe in the American people... BUT perhaps I am wrong... perhaps Americans, like this panel, are happy to re-elect a failed President who is leading the company to increased debt, a spider's web of business regulation, a misguided green agenda that will lock up America's resources, a gender and race war that will continue to divide not unite Americans, and a Washington or Beltway based system of government that will stay in gridlock...
Charlie Rose you should put your table away and let the intellectual discussion be taken up by people who want America to rediscover its dynamism, its diversity (not the continued GroupThink you present here), and the spirit that took Armstrong to the Moon...Find some real talent Charlie Rose or fold your tent...
cheers, richard.

OBAMA V. ROMNEY ON THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY BAILOUT
Comment was made below that Romney would not have bailed out the auto industry. This statement in and of itself may or may not be true. But, it gives rise to an interesting line of inquiry. If for a moment we think of POTUS as CEO of the USA, and of Government as a Corporation perhaps called "USA Capital" (in competition with the likes of Bain Capital), then it is the business of USA Capital and POTUS to decide to rebuild, reorganize, downsize, or bury failing bank or automobile firms on a contractual basis. Ultimately, are not taxes a different form of private capital, managed by those that the stockholders (taxpayers) have put in place to do the expert do? Had the automobile and banking industries contracted with such as Bain Capital to sort out their financial and modernization issues, then the interesting question would be, "What tools and solutions would such as Bain Capital have brought to bear?" Were the tools at the disposal of POTUS and Congress greater than those of such as Bain Capital? Should Government have left the banking and auto industries to succeed or fail in the so-called private sector? Would that have been the responsible solution at the scale of the world economy in real time? If such as Bain Capital had the same tool box available to it as was available to Government, would banking and automobile industry failures have been the foregone conclusions? (The failure of Lehman says 'yes'.) Yet, are the present apparent relative successes [of the actions taken by Government vis-a-vis the banking and auto industries] long-lasting or prelude to more nightmare?

THE RHINOCEROS IN THE ROOM...
... is not even at the Republican Convention; it will be Bill Clinton or Joe Biden at the Democratic Convention, and this because of Joe Biden's recent race-baiting gaffe. It will require the utmost forgiveness of the President, of the Democratic Party, and of the Black Community, to simply say, "Well, that was just another Joe Biden foot-in-mouth moment...." If ever was a tempting causus belli to risk changing horses in mid-stream, there is certainly the appearance of it now. It is not impossible to imagine Bill Clinton introducing his wife Hillary as the new replacement Democratic VP candidate for 2012. Nor is it impossible to imagine former Governor Christ of Florida being drafted for the VP spot. Or Leon Panetta. Gaffe for Gaffe, one would think that Biden and Romney were steeped in deliberate competition. The Republicans could actually win this election, if Romney were to announce that he and Ryan were switching roles on the ticket. Or not.

What I found depressingly sad is that, despite having all those media and press people sitting at the Rose table, not one -- NOT ONE, -- including Charlie Rose would dare say the one thing that is the 800 pound gorilla in the room of this Presidential campaign: the Romney is simply based on LIES. Easily demonstrated, objectively-determined LIES. And not one of those people -- including CHARLIE ROSE -- would say that simple fact.
It is disgusting. Plain and simple. End of discussion.
Here's what the press and media -- including CHARLIE ROSE -- needs to do. Tell the damn truth; paint an honest picture of reality. Stop being cowards. The press and media has a function and an obligation to the society that allows them to tell its story. And it is derelict in its duties.

This assemblage of east coast Liberally biased media elite around Mr Roses Table ressembles nothing more than a morning Koffee Klatch, where the conversation was kept ever so light. For instance Mr Klein on Obama said, "That Obamas biggest problem is that he doesn't explain himself well enough..." This is EXACTLY THE SAME CRITICISM THAT OBAMA HAS LEVELED AGAINST HIMSELF FOR AT LEAST THE LAST 4 YEARS. If Mr Klein can not even make up his own criticism of Obama then he should just go away, one doesn't want to hear from him anymore. Yet what made it so evident about their bias for Obama is that they are so negative about anything including the chance of victory for Romney and Ryan. From which the most important thing gathered is that the most positive thing that they could say about their clear favorite Obama is their negativism about Romney and Ryan. This is a sad state of affairs where no one has any real enthusiaiam for either canidate at a time when the stakes are so high for Amewrica, and one might add what does this bode for this nation?
REMant 08/28/2012 12:02 PM Report
The Dems seem to want to blame Obama for everything. Since the Republicans have spent nowhere near as much as they in blaming them, there would not seem to be anyone left to blame. The campaign has so far seen a few "niggardly" moments, a display of poor sex education, and a number of ridiculous prevarications, more likely IMHO to turn voters off than on, but I think in the past several weeks Romney has managed to make himself more attractive to libertarians, whom I imagine make up a lot of the undecideds, (for example by suggesting he would not reappoint Bernanke), to appear more open-minded than his party's ideologues, and less agitated. Tho there will be less oratory in Tampa, the fewer "elephant heads" the public sees this week, I think, the better.
I thought Ryan clearly the nearest to the candidate in perspective and ethic, maintaining his standing with the Wall Streeters, as well as, improving it with AIPAC, the CFR, and the evangelicals. The idea that it was a concession to the Tea Party I thought in error, and have subsequently been joined in this opinion by a number of commentators. I don't think calling him "the NEXT president" was exactly a slip of the lip. But I think that's likely to be in error, too.
The real problem with the choice is that they've put up the backs of community organizers by talking about work, which, in the context of Bain, is somewhat hypocritical. I suspect, for instance, Mitt wouldn't have saved American Motors under any protocol. But in this country, with a legacy of a half-century of largess, the work ethic is a hard sell. I fear, and, as I see from their portfolios, so also do several well-known investors (including a well-known Dem supporter), that before the public grasps the point we will have to descend further into impecuniousity. But the pols are afraid of even mentioning reality, and the recent rise in the markets doesn't bode anymore well than the rise in food prices. There is, tho, a considerable economic advantage in saving for retirement, if it would nevertheless take some real effort to make the change.
As I understand it, the gender gap is something of a canard, Obama attractive only to feminists, and the like. He probably also has a strong lead among homosexuals, tho it may be against the law for pollsters to ask them. Immigrants are not all averse to working, either. It's become a commonplace that rather than do anything, the president, himself, makes a speech about it. And, I think, Howard Dean proved the point about contesting in all the states four years ago.
But the more I consider the last four years, the more I realize this president has been fairly consistent in following an agenda, tho he hasn't got much the way he wanted. I think he would have done better if he'd been more open-minded and reached out more in the beginning. His behavior has not bespoken a man really prepared for the office. But I got a charge out of reading that a new book has "revealed" the stimulus actually cloaked plans to modernize the economy, which, considering how much we talked about it here at the time, doesn't say much for Jake Tapper, who wrote the item. It seems Obama's decided to accomplish what he can administratively, and altho Dems have always been proponents of immigration, and it no doubt involved some calculation, I think that action came about more or less incidentally. Yes, I think he's learned a lot in the past four years, but the same could have been said about FDR, and he was actually in a better position.
While it's nice to see my old roommate begat such intelligent and amiable offspring, hopefully the Rosecrucians will see their way to invite some of the Republican punditry to discuss the Democratic convention.
