"The most commonly prescribed multiple sclerosis drugs, including those made by Biogen Idec Inc. (BIIB) (BIIB), Bayer AG (BAYN) and Merck KGaA, failed to slow disability progression in a long-term study that raises new questions on whether the treatments can achieve that goal."

I am not really surprised, but very disappointed, at the incomplete view of the treatment of MS on your show. The influence of pharmaceuticals is obvious, especially with a representative of Biogen on the panel. There was no mention of the most exciting discovery relating to the relief of symptoms of MS EVER! I'm talking about venoplasty for chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI--which I am sure your panel members are aware of but, because it doesn't profit them with their unproven autoimmune theory and drugs, they don't want to admit how much it can improve the quality of life of many people with MS.

I didn't hear anybody mention how people with progressive forms do not qualify for any of the drugs--they are only for relapsing/remitting cases. These people are left to just progressively deteriorate. Venoplasty is a simple, minimally-invasive vascular procedure that neurologists aren't qualified to deal with and doesn't make any money for the drug companies. If you really want to know more about MS, this is something to be looked at. Please let me know if I can be of any help. This is my before/after video:

      Dear Mr. Rose:

I know this is a lot to ask. I enjoy the Brain series as at 45 I had a massive stroke for a migraine. You next program w/Dr. Kandell will be about pain. I know he will discuss migraine but if they could at least touch on post-stroke pain, which I suffer from, I would be most grateful. Keeping up w/the latest information, even as a Kaiser Permanente patient is entirely my job. Thank you, a PBS member and avid viewer of your program and CBS in the morning.

Other than helminthic therapy, the TB vaccine BCG has been shown great results in Europe. Unfortunately, these therapies are not money makers for pharma so they are not pursued as well as they should be.

Everyone with RRMS should look at Helminthic Therapy. The results are awesome: http://tiny.cc/b2achw

My wife has suffered from MS since 1996. She has been on Copaxone for more than 10 years, but it appears not to be effective any more. I enjoyed the program and we will likely try Tsabri, but I was surprised that there was no mention of another very promising treatment.

Helminthic therapy is being studied at several universities around the world, with major work being done at the University of Nottingham in England. Thought studies have been small so far, the effective rate has been over 75% positive, which is better than almost any of the drugs.

Helminthic therapy seems wierd, it is the introduction of small doses of natural parasites (hookworms or whipworms), under the theory that these parasites evolved with human beings and that since we've eradicated them, through sanitation, completely to combat the negative effects of infestation (Polagra etc...), we have also eradicated the positive side-effects that they produced. The theory is that something in the hookworm or whipworm suppresses a very small part of the Immune System (the part that sometimes goes haywire in MS.

I know that there are many neurologists who simply scoff at the notion that there could be a natural defense, but theoretically it is defensible. I'm anxious to see what happens in teh big Nottingham Study that's just beginning, but the two preliminary studies were extremely positive.

There are a couple of alternative treatment centers out side the US, as the US has banned it as a treatment. But depending on how things go with Tsabri, we may very well be journeying to Tijuana or Europe to try it. The cost of the treatment is the equivalent of about two months of my wife's current drug, but could last for up to several years.

I wish the US would put a bit more energy into this idea, but I think the fact that a drug company can't patent a hookworm is probably one of the reasons that more research isn't being done.

tired and can't think will post anyway (taking break overwhelmed trying to accomplish real things)

      ----------

we've probably all read that exercise doesn't affect depression but check this

      http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/22/magazine/how-exercise-could-lead-to-a-better-brain.html

a better brain could result in a clearer idea of how to . . .

doing real things no more hypothetical (which always drastically changes once you start doing real things) if i come up with real results i will report

(deleted all of the depressing rambling serves no purpose - OKAY forget move forward)

I REALLY THINK BIKING CAN SUBSTANTIALLY HELP DEGENERATIVE BRAIN DISEASES AND BEYOND IT'S WHY I'M POSTING THIS AT LEAST I'M HOPING WILL REPORT BACK WITH MORE SUBSTANTIAL RESULTS ONCE I FINALLY PULL OFF A SUSTAINED AND COMPREHENSIVE RECOVERY ATTEMPT (have a long way to go)

      ----------

this girl (with the patches of hair) her autoimmune system attacked her hair and that's how she lost her hair - i also went to high school with somebody whom that happened to - also then after she started CYCLING (which was maybe like five years later) within a year her hair grew back but then it fell out again (the other girl had asthma and a collapsed lung and started cycling to combat that) (from the month i got started doing it this year i really felt like it started helping to push my body into initiating a reactionary healing process more so than otherwise thought i definitely think it's a beneficial piece to the puzzle towards overcoming a lot of problems and once you start doing it you naturally begin to push your body to the limit at times and i think that too has a beneficial effect)

the right bike can make it fun and not give you motion sickness

but that's it i'm going back into science and research and the real life application of it (it's the only thing that can possibly have any meaning)

this show is REALLY great it's fantastic this is the best show there is

      ----------

okay check this see this link here

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ra0gXSXUJA&feature=relmfu

when they interviewed the team pursuit winners the uk team

in my delusional fantasy world i was absolutely convinced that she was repudiating the whole world and had shaved her head like that with her eye shadow and that she was secretly revealing in front of everybody how she was literally rocking the other girl's world in the top position and then the other girl on the left that was her reaction to hearing that

and how they were going to take it into the olympics and go for gold

then i got paranoid about accidentally revealing or outing them on the charlie rose show and who might be watching this (like it was their own secret personal world that they were stars in like they were going for it themselves and i had infringed on that by posting)

so this is proof that i'm completely schizophrenic

      ----------

i feel empty anyway and everything seems meaningless and trivial (which is in itself trivial to actual sensations but i think is an additional result of them) i know everything gets old (not to repeat the same thing over and over to always expand into brand new ideas and thoughts is a goal) i just want to get better and when you feel better everything doesn't feel trivial in comparison and

hopefully just accomplish gradually without thinking about start new transcend into a brand new life world (and self) state of being comprehension comprehensive everything something that should always be occurring

so anyway sorry for all the posts kind of a trip

IS THE DISEASE WE CURRENTLY RECOGNIZE TO BE IN THE BRAIN AS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PERHAPS SECONDARY TO DISEASE OF THE LYMPH NODES?

If I heard the conversation correctly, there is a virus that attacks the lymph nodes and either mutates lymphocytes or causes lymphocytes to issue forth from the lymph nodes into the blood stream and attack the body including (but not necessarily limited to) penetration of the blood/brain barrier?

    13. SharkswithfrikingLazers  07/11/2012 02:02 AM Report

      So many autoimmune diseases.

Is this a system so poorly evolved that it can kill us?

Our own bodies attack us as well as allow us to carry around cancer cells.

We are more like bacteria transports if you do a count.

What exactly is this thing called "human"?

    14. SharkswithfrikingLazers  07/11/2012 01:52 AM Report

23,000 genes we have and perhaps just 60 are involved.

See you brain scientists are closing in and doing marvelous work.

Interesting Biogen story and how they had to pull the drug after the first approval because people died from a brain virus.

The law of unintended consequences must have skipped the clinical trials.

'A Biogen spokeswoman tells us the drugmaker has a policy of not making Tysabri, which is approved only for treating multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease, available for any other treatment, even for compassionate use. That’s because the med was linked to a deadly brain infection – PML – which prompted a withdrawal in February 2005. Sales resumed in July 2006, but only under a closely controlled program that restricts access and usage.

Fred Baron, a prominent Dallas trial lawyer who helped bankroll John Edwards’ presidential run and also paid for the former senator’s mistress to leave Chapel Hill, North Carolina, after the affair made national headlines, is dying of multiple myeloma. He wanted the Tysabri for his myeloma:

Ann Romney, diagnosed in 1998 at age 49, has said she keeps her MS under control with traditional medicine, but also uses a combination of alternative therapies, such as reflexology and yoga, to keep her symptoms in check. Romney is also an avid horseback rider, which is actually also a treatment for MS.

"You know, what happens with me is that I start to almost lose my words. I almost can't think. I can't get my words out. I start to stumble a little bit and so those things were happening and I thought, 'Uh oh, big trouble.'"

One of the best roundtable discussions I've seen on MS in a long time. Thanks for making this a priority. Only by keeping these kinds of conversations going will we find better and more effective treatments for MS and hopefully a way to stop it in its tracks. Kudos Mr Rose and the rest of the roundtable.

Dr. Woodrow C. Monte, Professor Emeritus of Nutrition, Arizona State University, has written the book, While Science Sleeps: A Sweetener Kills, about what he has identified as the likely cause of MS -- methanol poisoning -- which he documents as being completely avoidable solely by altering your diet to avoid food that contains methanol. See whilesciencesleeps.com.

I don't know if this will help anybody, but I had some MS symptoms in the winter of 2010 and what helped me was to go outside and absorb sunlight and eat more food that contains Vitamin D, here a good link on that: http://diet-myths.com/importance-of-vitamin-d/

It was said that MS has spiked over the last 15 years, maybe this could be attributed to the rising use of computers and more and more people working indoors and therefore they do not get the sunlight they require to keep their Vitamin D levels up.

OK, I am going to leave the computer now to take a walk outside to get some of that free Vitamin D hahaha

Wishing everybody with MS a quick and lasting recovery, because I know it really is not pleasant.

      From the article:

      ''Multiple Sclerosis and Vitamin D

Multiple Sclerosis or MS is a disease that results from the body’s failure to recognize itself. The immune system will then attack and destroy the sheath that protects nerves. The body cannot distinguish between itself and a foreign substance or infection. This turns the body’s normally effective defense system against itself. Since vitamin D is an immune system regulator people who spend more time outside have less occurrence of MS. People living in regions where they can spend time outside year round have a much less potential to get MS. Vitamin D pills are now being used as a treatment for MS''
