I admire the persistent belief that Arabic language is the only language to communicate with God. I guess 'communicate' translated from Arabic means transmit information, not interchange information. I think the language is highly possible to reality when being used by released Prometheus.

Identify the character of shadow side of Prometheus. When Gods designed human being in certain early phase, two companies had been organized, one for connecting senses to physical body and testing accuracy and sensitivity, another for shaping the effects of physical accuracy and sensitivity on individual and human society as a kind of animal referring to other animals. Humanity is the topic of debate between these two companies. In their purpose of project, humanity is defined in the scale of certain animal kingdom. Obviously, advanced design purpose were temporarily blind at the accomplishment of these two companies. Prometheus is famous of prophecy, but he is not good at controlling fire, part of whose consequences on prophecy is distortion, deform, or even destroy. Thus, he introduced fire to humans, clearly demonstrating his failure. Zeus made punishment on Prometheus, which was enough for him to know how to control fire. I am not sure whether the punishment is also for his wrong doings before highly advanced civilization.
I go to see movie resident evil 3.

I'm all for peace and love, but the over-caffeinated, book tour-soundbyte mode of this interview isn't really raising the level of the discourse on the topic.

Correction: I did NOT mean "dense" as a pejorative.
jpauldavid67 04/29/2012 07:21 AM Report
I certainly did mean "dense" as a pejorative; I meant perhaps sometimes difficult to comprehend in one fell swoop by those not familiar with Islam and issues surrounding it. I should have clarified: I was referring to all of Irshad's work. As a Canadian I have followed all of Irshad's work on this side of the border with great interest. She is intelligent, thought-provoking and - I think - brave. And, yes, I think Charlie looked bored, or cynical...
topazgirl 04/28/2012 08:50 PM Report
Is it odd that I think I must have heard a different conversation than JPaulDavid? I did not feel Irshad Manji's presentation to be "dense", and as I saw her segment AFTER I had read JPD's and the other posts here, I watched carefully to see if Charlie looked "bored", and saw none of that from him...
Manji may be a bit "idealistic" and naive to think that these changes in Islam will come in any near future, but she is still correct... They SHOULD come, and WILL come some day...
Islam, in the past, had a beautiful history of intellectual and scholarly study, and encouraged conversations with those of other religions. Great "minds" of ancient World came from all over to study, and talk, and debate with Muslim intellectuals on issues of philosophy, religion, and World views.
I must admit that I heard the word (phrase?) "ijtihad" long before I had ever heard of the "jihad" we hear of today. Back about 20 years ago, a Muslim friend of mine explained it to mean "a scholarly search or investigation for interperation or meaning in a variety of ideas, not just related to the Quran. I LOVED the concept of ijtihad.
In light of the heated political, cultural, and ideological times we live in, I fear this will be no easy task... No easier than Christians trying to reconcile differences between "fundamentalists", Unitarians, or David Koresh and the Branch Davidians.
I wish her (and others) well in this endeavor, and hope that she does not experience the same hostilities that Salman Rushdie did... Her book will seem like "Satanic Verses" to many in the Arab World, especially being written by a woman!
jpauldavid67 04/28/2012 02:41 PM Report
Wow. Agree with her or not - and her thesis and the manner in which she presents it can be "dense" - for a reputed forum celebrating conversation, I don't think I've ever seen Charlie look more bored, heavy-lidded and non-enthused with a guest... and he's had some real humdingers promoting silly books. I keep thinking of Tina Brown pushing her ridiculous book on Princess Diana and Charlie fawning over it. I guess it helps if you go to the same dinner parties.

there is a lyric that i will borrow to state my comment
"Iam not afraid of your jehovah, i am not afraid of your allah,i am not afraid of your torah, i am not afraid of your jesus BUT I AM AFRAID OF WHAT YOU DO IN THE NAME OF YOUR GOD. QUOTE FROM HOLLY NEAR SONG "I AM NOT AFRAID"G-D IS what we make him, her, or the universal being, why do som many people proclaim that christianty has the corner on all other religions , buddhism, judiasim, hidi , and other religions that are derived from a vast beauty of ethnic backgrounds, now politics is rapped up in politics, which it shouldnt be, as the founding fathers left england for religious freedom!! Why cant we just leave people to worship in their own way? and before one judges READ THE BOOK, OR TORAH , OR BIBLE, HOMEWORK FOLKS, THE BIBLE HAS SOME TOUGH HARSH RULES IN IT AS WELL, "AN EYE FOR AN EYE"
remember we live in a democracy, but if you really read up on our founding fathers one re-wrote the bible for his needs, and one was atheist, one was Jewish, but they were an open minded group, so before dnouncing someone for trying to do something good , investigate the source. and YES WOMEN DO HAVE A PLACE IN CHANGE, AND IN THEIR RELIGIONS, AND ONE CAN BE AN ETHNIC MUSLIM AND NOT PRACTICE,JUST AS SOME OF MY JEWISH FRIENDS ARE SECULAR JEWS WHO DONT GO TO TEMPLE , OR ONLY ON HOLY DAYS, WHY DO I KNOW THIS, I AM JEWISH!!! AND I HAVE MUSLIM NEIGHBOURS, THEY HAVE NO HATE TOWARD ME OR ANYONE OH WHY DO WE JUDGE INSTEAD OF BEING CRITICAL THINKERS EVERY THING HAS 2 SIDES. MAY LOVE WIN OUT SOMEHOW AS GOD IS LOVE WHAT EVER YOUR GOD IS, LOVE IS THE BLESSING.

'Playing God with others is the central sin in Islam. Devotion to one God means defending liberty.'
Yes, my love, good luck with that.
SharkswithfrikingLazers 04/28/2012 02:13 AM Report
Yes, Muslims killing Muslims more than anyone else just like African-Americans killing African-Americans more than anyone else.
Gotta love yourself first.

Yes, not just Arabic just like Catholics (except Mel Gibson) had to move away from just Latin.

At 1:21 check out her story about the incident in the Netherlands.
She pointed to the word "Love" in her book title and 22 Jihades were dumbfounded.
Charlie, I really loved your reaction. (I grunted too.)

Charlie, I am not quite sure but I think she said the title of her book more times in 14 minutes than any other guest in the history of your show.

"Devoted to reforming Islam."
A woman? With short hair? In pink?
Yes and next she will reform Mormonism and Catholicism.
Hey, now there's a blockbuster for the summer of 2013.

"But it is a fact..." "However one questions her belief..." I think Irshad Manji makes an excellent point about expressing judgment with humility, and I think owning opinions with a first-person singular pronoun is part of that. I loved -- yes, loved -- this interview.

Allah has blessed Irshad with a mind and the courage to speak it. However one questions her belief that she should be considered to be a Caliph at the snap of the fingers. For it is not only a struggle of the mind that frees one from conformity but of the heart and soul as well. To break the bonds of ones own narrative of conformity requires the willingness to question everything and accept anything. Only then will the gates of Paradise open and the light of Allah stream forth upon us. However there is a cavet and that is that because we are but mortal and can not rid ourselves of all earthly distractions our perceptions will remain ever so clouded.
Saultxyca 04/27/2012 03:25 PM Report
Here's a fearless blast of refreshing Canadian air on a musty subject, but good luck, Irshad: it's a monster task through, at least, this lifetime. Maybe Elif Shafak — who has yet to visit Charlie's show — can nimbly tackle the scary subject of a young, super-smart, progressive Muslim femme taking on the mullahs, muftis and Imams, in fiction. I sense another best seller in that.
EthicalHumanist 04/27/2012 12:43 PM Report
The "peaceful" religion of Islam needs a massive reformation in order to bring it into the 21 st century. As long as Saudi Arabia runs the system of "education" in many Islamic nations and the mullah mafia runs Iran, this reformation will be opposed on a global level.
REMant 04/27/2012 12:42 PM Report
I'm afraid I didn't understand a word she said. But it is a fact that Muslims come in a variety of shapes and sizes, not all bad, or all good. Just like Africans. I am afraid, however, that her thesis, in Western terms, aims to reconcile Catholicism with Protestantism, which won't fly.
