I thought Alexis and the other woman started Gilt. I did not know it was Kevin Ryan.

To start a business capital would certainly help. There are so many individual out there who have great ideas, but simply do not have the capital to start one. The part about people makes totally sense I certainly wouldn't hire someone who doesn't know what is doing.

I've seen more and more ads for these auctions, but wouldn't consider bidding anymore than buying penny stocks. Not that I object to the idea philosophically. Just the insecurity. The main reason why corps exist is to provide the security; the knowledge that one is getting what one expects. And some pieces I've seen have accused these things of chicanery.

Selling excess inventory at a discount tho is as old as Filene's (or I guess Macy's) basement. Timed sales are as old as the Shopping Channel, etc, and used by Ebay. Marketing promotions as old as clipping coupons. Discount outlet stores had long ago tapped into the idea of selling goods made specifically for them under the guise of being bargains.

The one thing it seems that the last 15-20 years seems to have impressed upon ppl is that the Internet is even better at creating hysteria. For sure this kind of thing has a distinct human limit, both on the marketing and the production side, and I wonder how many of their users suffer buyers' "gilt."
