At about the 33rd minute Charlie has an insight into the importance of the lighter that Gary by his reaction had not imagined. That is that Karla used the lighter to save his life made possible by Smiley forgetting that he had given it to him. For someone so studied and careful in everything he did in his life to have made a careless mistake that was so costly was surely at the core of his deep sadness. Smiley got Karla off the hook and at the same time armed Karla with the weapon to bring down the Service. Just a lighter!

      Yes Scandie Mr Rose listens...

MR Oldham is a most interesting actor, in that he becomes absorbed with the personality dynamics of his characters, their motivations with other characters and plot. Once you understand these factors one an make them oh so real. Now if Mr Oldham would apply that same absorption to real life....

One has always loved MR Oldhams villains as they all seemed so delightfully bent, in particular Drexl Spivay, whose shelf life was all too short. One has always thought that a whole movie could be made about the life and times of Drexl Spivay.

I can see from the trailer this is another remake that's worse than the original, if only because of the overwrought music and cinematography. But there was no point in remaking it either. Writers stopped writing this stuff with the collapse of the Warsaw Pact. Unless the intent is to hold it up as an example to those to young to remember, tho I don't see how it can be. But then we are back to the overwrought part.

Dear Mr Rose: what a clever and wise Master you are when you interview the actor Gary Oldman. What a joy that you let him talk and be himself for an hour of the very highest quality.

Gary Oldman - and Charlie Rose - earned an Oscar tonight...
