SouthAmerica: It was interesting the presentation of the people who participated on this forum: US Nuclear Policy.
One of the people who participated on this forum said that the United States and Israel were preparing to attack Iran’s nuclear sites with nuclear weapons – on a pre-emptive nuclear attack to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
That person also said that such an attack would kill approximately 2.5 million people immediately, and another 11.5 million people would be exposed to high levels of radioactivity; and be affected by fallout.
After a nuclear attack most people would die from the original shockwave and many more would die later from the subsequent fallout. Acting on the human body, the shock waves cause pressure waves through the tissues. These waves mostly damage junctions between tissues of different densities (bone and muscle) or the interface between tissue and air. Lungs and the gut, which contain air, are particularly injured. The damage causes severe haemorrhaging or air embolisms, either of which can be rapidly fatal. The overpressure estimated to damage lungs is about 70 kPa. Some eardrums would probably rupture around 22 kPa (0.2 atm) and half would rupture between 90 and 130 kPa (0.9 to 1.2 atm).
Nuclear explosions produce large amounts of radiation and radioactive debris. Fallout is the residual radiation hazard from a nuclear explosion and is named from the fact that it "falls out" of the atmosphere into which it is spread during the explosion. It commonly refers to the radioactive dust created when a nuclear weapon explodes. This radioactive dust, consisting of hot particles, is a kind of radioactive contamination.
If the United States and Israel decide to go ahead with their plan to attack Iran’s nuclear sites with nuclear weapons – the results will be catastrophic for over 15 million people. And fallout would affect many other countries in the area such as Afghanistan, India and many others.
Can we rule out as non-sense a nuclear attack by the United States and Israel against Iran?
Not with the kind of government leadership that we have today in the United States and also in Israel. These people have been desensitized to the violence, to exceptional human suffering that they inflict on other people and they probably would not think twice to go ahead with their plans for a nuclear attack against Iran.
We are not talking about reasonable people in this case. It is possible that we are talking about people who some day will be charged with crimes against humanity.

I just posted this info at the Elite Trader Forum and also in other web sites in the internet as follows:
February 15, 2012
SouthAmerica: Americans are not the smartest bunch that hang around our planet, all you need to do is look at the history of the United States.
Americans are a very violent people by nature, and we can see this violent behavior reflected all over the history of the United States; from slavery, to the genocide of the American native Indians, to their nasty civil war, to a history of never ending wars around the world, to the CIA program “extraordinary rendition”, which since 2001 has captured an estimated 3,000 people and transported them around the world for the purpose of undergoing torture and worse, and finally the ultimate and the extreme act of human violence such as in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Americans always find excuses for their acts of violence, and they usually don't take responsibility for the damage that they do to other people.
American culture worship violence in every way; from its Indian and cowboy movies, to movies about war, any kind of war, about terrorism, and about the mafia and criminal gangs around the United States.
It seems to me that the US mainstream media has been in a coma for many years – they are brain dead and they don't have the capability to think, to reason and to use common sense anymore.
The US mainstream media has lost the ability to think for a long time now, and the only reaction we still can get from this brainless people, they serve as cheerleaders when the US is beating the drums of war such as in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Iran – and when they try to destabilize and interfere with the internal affairs all kind of governments around the world. (Usually with disastrous results for all these countries.)
Americans embark on all these adventures around the world, and most of the time they have no clue about what they are doing and the consequences of their actions – just look around to the chaos in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Syria, Pakistan, Lebanon, and so on....Everything is spinning out of control a reflection of US clueless leadership and pure ignorance about what they are doing in US foreign policy.
The United States is about to embark in another catastrophic adventure this time in Iran with the compliments of Israel, but before the United States make this humongous mistake – Americans should check the Armageddon that the United States will create inside Iran and also would affect many countries in that area of the world with catastrophic results for everyone.
I hope US government officials will check this video of a program broadcasted on C-Span in August 9, 2006. This program is very enlightening, but I want to put the spotlight on the presentation of Royanian, Simin - Co-Founder, Women for Peace and Justice in Iran – her presentation starts at the minute 39 of this video. She explains the consequences of an attack from the United States and Israel is going to have in that entire area of the world.
An American/Israeli attack against the nuclear facilities in Iran, might translate into the last act of war for the United States and its military. And most likely would trigger the final collapse of the US economic and financial system and the demise of the United States just like the Soviet Union.
That might be the last nail on the coffin of the United States as a nation – the end of another superpower – and the demise of another empire.
It's not too late and the United States can stop and avoid this catastrophic military attack against Iran – common sense and reason still can prevail – before the United States self-destroy in Iran, and have a demise just like the Soviet Union at the speed of light.

The U.S. says it's just a matter of time before the Syrian government collapses, while the Pentagon says it's weighing up 'theoretical' military action. Although Russia and China are adamant they won't allow foreign intervention in Syria via the UN, history shows Washington may find a way to bypass diplomatic barriers to push its agenda.

US supplying arms to Syrian rebels, uprising aim is to get rid of Russian naval base

The US-based intelligence-gathering firm Stratfor says most of the claims by the Syrian opposition about the seriousness of the country's crisis are untrue. The company insists protesters are exaggerating, to win support from powers like the US.
Dr. Paul Craig Roberts, a former Reagan administration official, told RT he believes Washington is doing more than simply backing the rebels diplomatically.
"The United States is bold in stirring up the opposition and in arming it. They used the cover of the Arab Spring and Arab protests as they did in Libya," he said. "These are not spontaneous protests, and certainly in an authoritarian state like Syria you wouldn't find people in opposition able to readily supply themselves with arms, with military weapons."

Israel has been saying for the last 7 years that Iran will have a nuclear bomb in 6 months, we have been told all this time that it's just around the corner.
Now after 7 years of Israel reinforcing this idea over and over again - that Iran will have a nuclear bomb in 6 months – Israel can't change after all this time the time frame from 6 months to one year.
To show that the Iranians are making some kind of progress regarding the development of nuclear weapons, then Israel should say for the next 10 years that Iran will have a nuclear bomb in about 5 months.
By Israel changing the time frame from 6 months to 5 months shows that it is becoming very critical now and it shows to the world that Iran is moving very fast with the development of its nuclear weapons.

Ricardo BRAZIL:
Hello. Brazil is growing in wealth and potential military power to contribute to solutions for the current century.
But these solutions must seek accommodation with (a)logistical science, (b)the highest technology we all can invent, (c)the substitution of robots in physical and mind-memory tasks for Chines and Indian human beings (in manufacturing), (d)democracy-human rights-and-happiness defined as virtue, etc. and the abolition of unemployment, poverty, pollution and risk of nuclear annihilation of all human beings in Brazil, America, Russia, China and elsewhere, etc.
There may be rational debate over American leadership -- this can best be resolved by early partnerships with the 20 or so most productive trading partner-nations. The future of Russia is extremely important. It is equal to America in absolute power. In our own interest, we cannot fail to partner with it. The MAD doctrine made them our partners from the Cuban crisis in 1962 until now. Newer partners do not need parity in WMD's. They do need parity in virtually everything else that smells like average wealth, respect and good manners.
In my view, Ricardo Brazil and REMant-Chomsky (or whomever he thinks of an ally), are most wrong in their view of monetary systems of production as hinted at by Keynes and made possible by Boole and Babbage and all who followed them.
The USA has a National Security Agency trying to out-science all our military rivals. We need the same approach to our trading partners. We do not need to out-science so much as we need to cooperate with them for global success in all things required to live in peace and combat nature's selfish genes that give no quarter and ask for none in return.
The Golden Rule is a fair beginning. The Preamble to the American Constitution (which can readily serve in place of all its other text) is a fair next step. If the WW Web had a Wiki-solutions, perfected to find the balance between open popular thought and qualified expertise, is a follow on we dearly miss.
Ricardo Brazil is asked by me to say what he means here and now. His footnote-like links ought to be put in separate posts that people like me do not have to read unless we want to. His mixing of common sense with footnotes ruins the rhythm of his wisdom.
REMant is fairly easy to read. I see him as a died in the wool neo-liberal more like Maggie Thatcher -- except for his Chomsky-like pessimism. Chomsky does not look to Keynes and computer science as our greatest opportunities. He seems to me, along with REMant to be negative stereotypes looking for flaws everywhere but in the mirror. Why he wants harder money and higher interest scares me. Softer money and higher output of absolute necessities is my middle name.
I do respect that REMant avoids argument with the likes of me. After all, if I'm right on most things he's an idiot. And vice-versa.

Gelles, you might enjoy reading my entire forecast that I posted on the Elite Trader Economics Forum at the following web site:
Here is a summary of my posting:
Economic Forecast for US Economy for 2012 and Beyond
http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=233861
January 1, 2012
SouthAmerica: My crystal ball continues to be very foggy these days, and I would be lying to you if I told you that I understand how the new economic system adopted by the United States in 2008 works.
It is very hard to make any intelligent predictions when today we have a new economic system adopted here in the United States based on stock market manipulations, massive U.S. government intervention and nationalization of major sectors of the US economy. And we have a U.S. government acting as if it’s in complete PANIC because the entire US economic system is spinning completely out of control in a downward spiral and as a result the US government is resorting to printing money as fast as they can in a major last effort to avoid the First Great Depression of the 21st Century.
We had QE1, QE2, QE3, “QE-Europe”, and “QE-anything” to keep the financial and economic system afloat a little longer, and keep the entire system from imploding into a black hole.
I have been writing for many years that the “First Great Depression of the 21st Century” has been already underway for a few years. I mentioned on my articles, and on my postings on the Elite Trader forums. Here are a few links to the various threads:
...
***
In a Nutshell: The global banking system is at the edge of the abyss, and we would have a massive global financial meltdown, if they were not trying to play games with the figures, and trying very hard to hide their massive losses the best way they can.
What this US$ 708 trillion dollars figure is telling me is that most of the derivatives is nothing more than a humongous “Ponzi Scheme” that can blow up at any time and start a massive chain reaction that can destroy the entire global financial system – it will be remembered as: the mother of all financial meltdowns.
During the great depression of the 1930's we had the stock market collapse of 1929, then in the following 3 years the stock market bounced back, then in 1932 started the real nasty decline that sunk the stock market and the US economy into the bottom of the abyss.
Today, we have reached that special 1932 turning point: the point where the stock market and the US economy it will sink like the Titanic.
What I am saying is: it does not matter who will be the next president of the United States, because we are entering the catastrophic phase of the new great depression similar to the period from 1932 to 1940.
We are going to have real rough years ahead of us. It's not going to be a pretty sight.
You can bet on that!!!!!!!
By the way, this new great depression that is underway, it will be a lot worse than the great depression of the 1930's.
You might be wondering why the US mainstream media has not been using the term “Great Depression” to described what has been going on in the economy of many countries all over Europe, and in the United States?
Only few years in the future they will look back to this period that we are going through, and then they will start calling this period the “First Great Depression of the 21st Century.”
My guess is that in 2012 we will have another massive global financial meltdown worse than the one we had in 2008.
We never had before so much government interference and manipulation on the financial markets the way that we have today, and it is hard to predict what would create the spark that would blow up the entire global financial system – but that could happen at any time.

Ricardo: Sorry to say this to you Gelles, but your statement shows that you live in the world of the illusion, and your mindset is stuck in a world long gone.
The United States veto anything on the United Nations that goes against Israel, the US does that all the time.
And the rest of the world just watch quietly to the fiasco time after time without making too much noise.
Now Russia and China use its right to veto something at the UN Security Council once, and the US goes hysterical and start crying like a baby.
That shows how insecure and weak the US has become. The world has been changing faster than ever before, but the United States can't accept its obvious decline in “prestige and influence” around the world as another superpower reaches the end of the line.
I am not substituting Russian and Chinese leadership for anything – If I were the president of Brazil I would give 6 months for the UN to change its structure to something more relevant to the world of the 21st century. And as part of this change I would demand a permanent seat on the UN Security Council for Brazil with veto powers.
If after 6 months the Brazilian demands were not met by the UN bureaucracy, then I would withdraw Brazil as a member of the United Nations and its subsidiaries – IMF, World Bank, and so on....
For all practical purposes today the United Nations and its subsidiaries are obsolete organizations completely out of touch with the world of the 21st century.
By the way, it is not the nation of RICARDO, it's the nation of Brazil.

This interview is about "Current Affairs" -- specifically stopping Syria from killing civilian Syrians and stopping Iran from becoming a nuclear-weapons nation and precipitating a nuclear arms race in the Middle East and, eventually, all over the rest of the world.
The comments on the interview drag Israel and Palestine into the discussion, but these two are not significant compared to nuclear arms proliferation and a failure to the unite, by Russia and China, with America and all other great powers, to protect Earth from such proliferation -- which, in turn, would invite nuclear accident, war and threats to civilization from uncivilized actors who may be given a chance to set our planet afire.
"Current affairs" also include the economic recovery in Europe, America and all their trading partners, which, independent of Iranian and (North Korean) threats to peace, is moving slow enough to also threaten civilization by allowing DEBT and UNEMPLOYMENT to render nations impotent and unresponsive to forces that will return fascism to fashion and world war III type re-alignments that are established when the center cannot hold.
Ricardo and REMant offer anti-American propaganda that must be rejected. They are "smart alecks" whose opinions support substituting Russian and Chinese leadership for our own. They will vehemently deny this -- since they have no love for Russia or China -- and claim their own leadership is what the world requires in the worst way. The nations of RICARDO and REMANT are their suggestion. These two are a sad pair.
Hitler made war against unarmed Jewish civilians. He would have won that war, except for the fact that he made war against the Russian, American, and British Commonwealth peoples, as well. Now Iran walks in Hitler's footsteps. It is looking hard for tragic results for itself.
International debt and unemployment are self-inflicted wounds around the world. We cannot blame Hitler, Iran or Mickey Mouse for them. Debt was supposed to have been put on hold for future resolution by super-mass production or set down in the barber chair for a much-needed haircut. Unemployment was supposed to have been eliminated full-employment national budgets in every civilized nation.
But neo-liberal economics has given us an anti-Keynesian flu nearly as bad as the one that gave us World War II.
The Charlie Rose Show and Bloomberg's series on Silicon Valley miracles and other business lore are bright spots on TV. They are imperfect. But at a micro-economic level they succeed. We hope Charlie and President Obama can learn enough macro-economics to get above an"F" in this class they are forced to attend. Sadly for us now and them soon, they appear to be blind to their own short-comings. But Bill Moyers is the same. And Ben Bernanke is not much Better. Our world needs the product of work and money enough to motivate production. Instead it is given the rope a dope of profit and loss accounting instead of the reality of work and food.

The Christian interpretation of “Leviathan” is often considered to be a “demon” or natural monster associated with “Satan or the Devil”.
Some biblical scholars considered “Leviathan” to represent the pre-existent forces of chaos.

Regarding the actual article The Economist said that today the Jewish lobby in the United States can count with the help of - “…The lobbyists had every reason to feel proud of their work. Congress has more Jewish members than ever before: 30 in the House and a remarkable 13 in the Senate.”
From all the people I have seen on television for a long time “Zbigniew Brzezinski, a former national security adviser” is the one person that has the best understanding of what is happening in Iraq, and the Middle East. DEFIANT RUSSIA Speaking for Russia, Vitaly Churkin maDE clear that Russia regards Syria as an important and perhaps vital satellite of Russia and that Russia will not abandon Syria to the Western political sphere of influence. The question then becomes, "What is the definition of Russian self-interest with respect to Syria, and does that Russian self-interest call for Russia to encourage the Assad regime to negotiate a departure or to stay in power. The speedy vote at the UN may have done much to publicly define the China-Russia-Syria-Iran-China Circle of Power. What has yet to be determined is where, when, and how to break that Circle of Power. Nor is it trivial that Russia, China, and Iran are all operating in South America; ergo, the US must be sure to guard it's own backyard and even it's own back door. To some extent Britain is doing that in sending the Royal Heir to the Falkland Islands, a move that simultaneously protects both British and American security. To what extent South America may itself be a vital link to the solidarity of the above described Circle of Power ought to be a topic of analysis (even if that significance were to prove to be limited to the already obvious military threat to the US from within the American sphere of influence). If the Circle of Power should prove to be unbreakable, then this may have indirect and later direct consequences (a) to Turkey (and therefore Lebanon and to NATO), (b) Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. There is a principle of physics, which states that "the shortest distance between two points is not necessarily a straight line". If our eyes perceive Syria as the starting point, then China may be the second point located across the diameter of the Circle of Power. Of course China is much "closer" to the USA directly across the Pacific Ocean via Hawaii, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Australia. It may be timely to motivate some well trained undersea creatures to torpedo the hulls of the more significant vessels of the Chinese Navy, most especially it's new carrier. This is a move that might take some of the air out of the Chinese Balloon and simultaneously send shudders all along the Circle of Power.

This was an informative interview. Susan Rice in a very clear and reasonable way presented U.S. policy on Syria, Iran. She explained the difference between Syria and Libya in terms of intervention from the U.S. point- of- view. She may however be optimistic in thinking sanctions will work to stop Iran's nuclear program. But she was non- ambiguous in stating that President Obama is committed to preventing Iran from attaining nuclear weapons.
PS I note that the great majority of comments on this interview are strongly negative and even anti- American.
One of them is bigoted anti- Semite who makes the false charge that U.S. foreign policy is 'controlled' by Zionists. I wonder if Israel controls U.S. foreign- policy why the United States has repeatedly pressured Israel in regard to the Palestinian issue, why it sold against Israel's objections advanced weapons including AWAC's to Saudi Arabia, why it historically pressured Israel to withdraw twice from Sinai. There are tens of issues every year when these two strong allies disagree. Only an Anti- Semitic bigot and ignoramus could believe a small country like Israel could possibly dominate the one superpower in the world.

Israel is guilty of all these yet remains beyond criticism.
Charlie Rose doesn't have the courage to challenge this obvious contradiction.

Security Coucil, the Russians proposed a ceasefire on both sides (i.e.opposition groups and the Assad regime) to stop the bloodshed in Syria whereas the American side opted for Assad to step down which is in essence, regime change. Not only is regime change not part of the U.N. mandate but also would in no way guarantee the stop of the bloodshed (too many tribal and religious divisions among the population). This suggests that the U.S. is more interested in promoting their political agenda in the region than human rights and Mr. Rose should have raised this important paradox in American policy.
Although Charlie Rose was a little bias towards his country, I think he is a class act and always manages to have interesting guests on the show. I'll keep watching.

The bloddy and corrupt mullahs who do not represent the innocent people of Iran, have said in the past that they are willing to sacrifice half of the population of Iran(40,000,000 Iranians) in order to destroy Israel. The mullah mafia will not be allowed to do so.

Susan Rice also should read this thread then she would find out why Brazil should back up the veto position of Russia and China regarding Syria.
Americans think that everything is black and white, or you are with me or you are against me – and these people don't have a clue that in many occasions countries need to use common sense and follow their self-interest instead of following some old leader that is completely out of touch with the world of the 21st century and out of control.

Here is another reality check for Susan Rice regarding Iran. This soap opera has been going on for about 7 years
This is actually a very sad episode that shows how pathetic the United States is becoming, and that just help to reinforce and speed up its fast declining prestige and influence around the world.
The United States is planning to attack Iran with Nuclear Weapons

Here is a short list of the best of what Americans can achieve today:
1) Iraq = a pathetic situation with the compliments of the USA, and a civil war spinning out control.
2) Afghanistan = after 10 years of American intervention the place is a major mess and also spinning out control.
3) Pakistan = a joke of American intervention and diplomacy and the place is also spinning completely out of control.
4) Libya = After US through NATO destroyed the entire infrastructure of that country - the country is in the middle of a nasty civil war which is spinning out of control by the minute.
5) Egypt = American intervention on the internal affairs of countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, and so on...all these countries are a massive mess like never before.
6) Syria = The United States want to turn Syria into a wasteland in the same way they turned Libya into chaos.
7) Iran = the United States has been tormenting the Iranians and interfering on the internal affairs of their country since the CIA overthrew the legitimate democratic elected government of Iran in 1952 to install on its place a nasty dictator - a puppet of the United States which was a disaster for the Iranian people.
In a nutshell:
The only thing that the United States has been good at since the early 1960's is in creating chaos around the world.
I could list many other American fiascos around the world in the last 50 years including the US military defeat in Vietnam.
We also could add to the above list the war between the United States and North Korea that has been going on since the early 1950's and still going on today.
We could also add the fiasco in Somalia.
But the US Army had some undisputed victories in the last 30 years such as their attack against Grenada, and also Panama in the 1980's and 1990's.
These are facts that the entire world have been watching over the years resulting in United States declined in prestige and influence around the world.
Basically today, you have to be a complete idiot to follow American leadership to just about anything.

Here is a reality check for Susan Rice regarding how well an embargo and economic sanctions work.
She seems to be under the impression that economic sanctions work in a matter of months.
Talking about being naïve and in La La Land...The United States has been trying regime change in Cuba for over 50 years and Fidel Castro still in power in Cuba (a little country located right next door to the United States).
No wonder United States foreign policy is in shambles and these women are completely out of touch with the real world.
At the end of the day US foreign policy has become just a laughing matter for the rest of the world and most countries around the world do not pay much attention to what the United States has to say anymore.
United States embargo against Cuba
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_embargo_against_Cuba
The United States embargo against Cuba (described in Cuba and Latin America as el bloqueo, Spanish for "the blockade") is a commercial, economic, and financial embargo partially imposed on Cuba in October 1960. It was enacted after Cuba nationalized the properties of United States citizens and corporations and it was strengthened to a near-total embargo on February 7, 1962.

Susan Rice comes across on her interviews as a very naïve woman and an amateur in many ways. Extremely naïve and her agenda about spreading democracy around the Middle East is in La La Land.....
By the way, Hillary Clinton is not far behind Susan Rice and her very naïve and amateur comments about the countries of the Middle East, China and Russia.
I would suggest that both women should take a deep breath, and they should ask their doctors to give them a prescription of Prozac, and Valium to calm them down.

REMant 02/10/2012 12:09 PM Report
The Syrian opposition has rejected anything short of overthrowing the current govt and therefore the govt has no recourse but to use any means to defend itself. You can argue about who started it all, of course, but protests are not a part of constitutions everywhere. The principle of self-preservation, however, IS accepted everywhere, even with respect to Israel. One could argue as Netanyahu does that as soon as the opposition renounces violence and accepts the govt's existence, peace talks should take place, but that's the extent of it.
The only other argument that could be used is that the govt is using disproportionate force, involving non-combatants indiscriminately. But this is open to similar objections. Israel denies it uses disproportionate force against Gaza. The US denies it has used disproportionate force in protecting civilians in in places like Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't think many believe either, but one has to grant is not possible to observe all the niceties under the kind of circumstances alleged, and it is incumbent on the discriminated to prove their discrimination. I am not arguing that such discrimination doesn't take place, only that it is difficult to prove, and that those who want to make the argument can't have it both ways. Few in Washington have come running to the defense of the Palestinians in Gaza, or victims of US collateral damage.
Besides it is clear that the regime has considerable support among not only Shia minority groups but Christians and businessmen, a situation which could just as well apply to the current American administration making all the noise. As a practical matter the situation is unfortunately comparable to neighboring Lebanon or Iraq and anyone who steps into the fray is likely to get slugged by both parties.
Why not elections? Did elections make any difference in Iraq? In Afghanistan? Have they done anything except to provide some sort of color for intervention? Isn't that what all this UN maneuvering is about? Wasn't that the ploy used in Libya? Didn't we play the other side of the street in Vietnam, delaying elections indefinitely? And if it isn't that, then perhaps the administration wants to somehow accomplish the mission without intervention. Wasn't that also attempted in Libya? By the French in Ivory Coast? Or use UN peacekeepers as decoys? Isn't that always the liberal, the particularly Christian, way?
Then we have the supposedly new idea that a govt's very legitimacy lies not in force, OR in consent, but in "protection." Or Montesquieu's false honor. Isn't that tho rather a very much older idea, stemming from the Abrahamic Covenant? Is that "democratic?" If it were the case, the Declaration of Independence would have found little to complain about.
Now then, we have an another instance of Mr Rose leading his guest. I'll tell you what a REAL student of history would say: that this sort of tactic is the same sort of propaganda used by the abolitionists against the South, the Allies against Germany, the US against the Japanese and the Soviets.
He apparently thinks both Syria and Iran amount to the same thing. Sic semper tyrannis. Charlie should have joined the Marines when he had the opportunity to do so and gotten it out of his system. It is truly amazing how many of today's important personages managed to avoid service in a nine-year-long war that drafted hundreds of thousands of young American men and claimed almost 50,000. And how many of them now feel obliged to compensate for it.
