Not trying to be mean....but, Jill Abramson has maybe the most annoying voice to listen to. Her way of slowly talking and drawing out her last syllable in almost every sentence is absolutely excruciating to listen too

Charlie, excellent discussion. I'm an avid viewer of your programs and shows -- they are very informative. The design of your website, where I often go to catch up, is very imaginative. With black background and no fancy mix of colors its soothing to one's eyes.

The commentary column looks like unsupervised. One comment, for example, has been repeated four or five times. If you need some one to be a desk editor at this job, you can consider hiring me. I'm educated, global in my outlook, your admirer and out of job.

Happy holiday season and a New Year.

Charlie, you are right. The key is the conflict. How Arab evolve or decay into stable?

One is not going to repeat oneself again about Obama. If one is interested in ones comments one should go to the 12/7/11 show with Mathew Dowd.

Further Mr Leohardt said that after a "Financial Crisis" the economy is "fragile" and that people are "scarred" and "afraid." Here one thinks that there is now $15,000,000,000,000.00 of US Sovereign Debt PLUS another $65,000,000,000,000.00 in unfunded public liabilities that are now coming due that make the economy "fragile" and people "afraid."

Mr Friedman sounds collected until he starts talking about the Euro SD and potential for a Euro meltdown, then one can here him become anxious. But this is nothing compared to when he tries to justify the Obama adminsitration for then Mr Friedman sounds like he has just hit the Crack laced Obama Kool Aid. The one thing that puzzles is the continued expectation by Obamaites that Obama can do something different, that he can "GO BIG." This presupposes that Obama is at the helm of his own destiny and can chart any course that he chooses at will. What the entire Charlie Rose crew including Charlie himself continue to fail to realize is that what you have seen in Obama is what you get because one can not easily modify ones own pathology and or personality.

We heard that Newt is a "megawatt celebrity" but Cain's supporter's coming over may be the real power plant.

Funny thing, Cain's affairs ended his run but Newt's affairs may not stop him. What if Newt is President because Cain's affairs gave him the boost he needs to get the nomination.

Ahh Republicans, gotta love the duplicity.

So don't we now need a surge for the Arab Spring? (We don't want an Arab winter as was mentioned.)

The window of opportunity is now. Who has the budget and resources, the State Department?

What would be the strategy? Perhaps like Afghanistan, send in the CIA and have them meet with the different factions and start throwing money around and building alliances.

New freedom--and the possibility of democracy--are terrible things to waste.

Thomas says, "When elephants fly, shut up and take notes."

When elephants fly I know I am watching "Dumbo" and I don't need commentary.

After watching this show mirroring the present world, I am lost, feeling like almost reaching the pole. It is unlikely to use compass to tell the direction. The lost leads me to the reference, the document film 'Encounters at the end of the world' filmed by Werner Herzog. During wind storm in the pole, all communications are inoperative except a simple way the double-strand rope.

I caught the last 1/3 of Friday's program, and was interested to hear Tom Friedman actually profess to have voted for Obama; however, I think one could safely assume that was true for the entire group. I'm an independent voter who did not vote for Obama mainly due to his lack of experience as any kind of manager. One could make the case that Mr. Friedman was right in voting for Obama, hoping for him to do great things; however, it's the President's inexperience that makes it so difficult to promote his point of view...not to mention that classifying him as a socialistic, big-spender is not completely incorrect either. Interestingly enough, tonight's show features Mitt Romney, who is not so much of an idealog, and a proven, solid manager. Maybe he'll have better luck if he can get through the primary battle and win the November election.

    15. ShalomFreedman  12/19/2011 02:21 PM Report

There were interesting points in this discussion. Tom Friedman made the point that Republican voters are seeking someone who can match the articulateness of Obama seems to me right. The analysis of the Obama Administration's lack of boldness in pursuing the 'big plan' which would have enabled them to attack the big issues, such as the deficit, the Energy problem also seemed to me correct. But there were also parts of the discussion that seemed to me 'off'. Friedman tends to pontificate and often error in doing it. There is a price to such great fluency as he has, and it means saying a lot of things many of them wrong and even stupid. When he said that Israel was worried about Lebanon because of the Palestinians there I was astonished. Hizbollah is there with thousands of missiles aimed at Israel. That and the Syrian and Iranian missiles are Israel's worry. The general talk about the 'Arab spring' seemed to me as usual a bit over-positive and optimistic. No one even mentioned that Mubarrak is gone and in his place is likely to come the Muslim Brotherhood. There was not a single word about the dangers of radical Islam. The survey did not mention Afghanistan, Pakistan. When they spoke about Iraq they did not even mention the Americans who gave their lives there, the many wounded and injured. Perhaps they should have considered whether it was worth the price. Charlie opened the program by saying that in this year Osama Bin Laden was dead. He wasn't just dead, his killing was a major triumph for American forces. The general point of Friedman that the Obama foreign policy has been successful seems to me not simply wrong but ridiculous. All these places in which the Arab Spring have taken place are now more hostile to America. Iran is still on its way to nuclear weapons. Afghanistan is a mess. Pakistan is an enemy the U.S. continues to pay off. The great ally Saudi Arabia is supplying the oil but no one mentioned it in relation to 'democracy'.

On the whole Charlie Rose made a poor selection of people to survey the events of the year. They are all in the same bag ideologically and in fact all work for the same place. The snooty contempt of Jill Abramson for Presidential candidate Gingrich was truly off- putting. Again I learned things from this program but as summary and evaluation of the global situation this year it seems to me a very thin and poor job.

    16. REMant  12/19/2011 11:41 AM Report

This could be summed up as asking whether the new year will see the Middle East and ppl anywhere else the Times obsesses over follow womankind, find true religion, and enter modernity, and whether Obama, too, will see the light and be re-elected.

We also learned that the two parties have never changed; the only thing we have to fear from Europe is fear itself; and, the only way to make America great again is through redistribution.

It IS true some socially conservative Republicans find that aspect of Romney's Mormonism to their liking. That liberals seem to take to the Disneyish former governor of Massachusetts, too, is suggestive - he is scheduled to be on this program tonight - but I'd submit Gingrich, who may represent for some simply a loquacious rival, is reminiscent of "The Gipper" in other respects as well, and might prove equally to their liking. After all, who increased taxes every year of his presidency and spent money like LBJ, sending Fannie, Freddie and the stock mkts off and running, bankrupting the Soviets? Who supported the Iraqis against Iran, and the Afghans, Ethiopians, Cambodians and Angolans against Communism? Who rescued "democracy" in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Grenada and elsewhere? Who bombed Qaddafi? Who attempted to eliminate nuclear weapons? Who built the space station and established a presidential committee on the arts? It wasn't Jimmy Carter.

BTW, Friedman really should have been an adman.
