Alexander Payne is a decent type, easy to engage and listen to, whose only connection to me is Sideways. I saw it by accident in a local multiplex with many old women in the audience who laughed out loud at the surprising male frontal nudity and unrelated later female success in beating up a sort of cad (if I remember rightly). What I remember most was my own laughing at the film in all the right places (I hope).
Now, soon about to leave for the afterlife, with lots of time and plenty of old movies for free on nice TV's, I find I take movies seriously. And I agree they are often very good.
Good books are, however, generally better. Movies are far easier. I watch hundreds of movies for every book I read. But I can believe a book but rarely a movie. Movies manipulate us more. And many books inform us of an important truth.
I recently saw Marilyn -- and will see Descendants. My reasons were largely because this CR Show covered them. Marilyn was a love story for me -- although for most critics it was a story about celebrity movie makers. After I see Descendants I'll report in again.

So you married Sandra Oh and directed her in "Sideways" and then got a divorce and directed her again in this film.
You say you like to direct actors who have been directors.
Your favorite part is editing.
So the conclusion is that you like the control part of the game and this may be another reason you despair between films.

"If you love film you love life."
Yes I love film but not all film. There is much that is a waste of time and money and that is why almost every newspaper has someone to review them.
I have learned much from film and the last one that comes to mind is "Inside Job" which is just another reason why I love film.

IMHO if film is a mirror, the reflection is usually badly misjudged.
