      I am not sure what kind of people Mr. Fallows was/is associated with in China. He said that he has been to every provinces of China. But his view of China stays very shallow and lack of substances.

      I think the Chinese must be facing more difficulties than most think, because of inflation, wealth disparity and slackening foreign demand, as well as, corruption and pollution. Ripping off patents and copyrights is normal for developing countries. We can't expect them to just be "reserve armies," and it wouldn't be good for either them or us even if we could. I don't know about Bush, but the GOP tend to be realists, which I think explains the Chinese attitude. You don't, incidentally, govern "big sprawling messes" by being Mr Nice Guy, and it would appear from what he said about liberty that the Chinese realize that. All of the garbage we've put out recently about democracy we used first on China.
