rob bravely pointed out below that there is often .."nothing transferable of value here, so you're on your own."
I suggest that is often the very "value" being sought, ..a pulling up the railroad's train-tracks, ..an interruption of communicative commerce, ..the driving of a herd of goats across a roadway to slow the traffic of messages.
Ahmadinejad does it also.
***
So what do we want anyway? ..National Security? ..or Social Security??
If you say "Social Security", ..are you meaning the security of the society itself? ..or the social-securities of the individuals who are within that society at any particular moment??
And if you say the "social-securities of the individuals", ..does that mean I have a right to a public transport which gets me to the workhouse on time?
Is that it?

.."National Security"???
I beg you to consider that age-old adage that notes "Nations fail when the population no longer sees a reason to defend it."
The best "national security" is a productive economy!!! ..and we haven't had that in years!!!
***
Yesterday my work car broke down on our un-maintained California freeway, ..the pot-holes shook my vehicle so violently, that my fuel pump thought I was in an accident, and shut-off to prevent a fire!
I worked in the hot sun for 2 hours trying to restart my engine, when 2 CHP officers encircled me, ..demanding my personal information.
I told these highly-paid youngsters that I was having a quite rotten day.
They quickly told me they could make it much worse, ..that they could "send me to prison."
I asked them if the food was good, ..and held out my wrists for the handcuffs.
They shouted at me, ..and simultaneously pulled their TASER guns and pointed them at my chest.
***
I'm telling you, ..I HATE today's "America", ..and I will never again defend it.
There's your "national security"!!

When the Tea Party Fools start focusing their attention to the EVIL LOBBYISTS, that's when I'll join the crowd. Crying about government deficits during a time of high unemployment and low demand is a redundant Waste of effort that is being perpetuated by the Evil powers that be behind the scenes to keep the focus off them, so they can try and stir up the next big bubble. The solution for alternative leadership is NOT his polar opposite(s) i.e. Tea Party Fanatics. The solution is, 'Buddy Roemer' for President. I'm telling you, he has his finger on the Big Problem, impediment to 'Demand', no other politician is addressing or has the credentials to attack the problem of systemic corruption within the American Democracy; until that problem is addressed, we will be mired in redundant smoke screens as the ignorant villagers run around with their torches and pitchforks, unemployed and crying about deficits.
Meanwhile, Glass-Steagall HAS NOT BEEN REINSTATED.

As an exercise in thought, it's interesting how diametrically opposed viewpoints can be formed from the same elephant being examined. This for example from PaulMann, and endorsed by Gelles, "Countries, as people, respect strength, militarily and economically. We are losing both."
Where's ANY empirical evidence that our jingoistic war mongering ourselves into three wars (count em) has gained us any respect anywhere. Latent boiling disdain and contempt more likely. Storing up for a real or imagined payback. Our techno-arrogance (a la drones, aircraft) will not always prevail - esp as we decline ec.
Love and kisses harder to fight against than drones and rockets. Chuckle.
JohnGelles 07/23/2011 04:14 PM Report
By way of tangent thought: Last night I heard on PBS an MD who authored "Growing Younger Every Year" explain how important it is at any age (including old age) to do your duty to yourself and to others. Do not forget the others as Barack Obama has done in spades.
He thinks it is his duty to mouth support for ordinary people out of work and out of money -- and to mouth support for Goolsbee's ideas at the same time. He does not see his duty to observe the results of his decisions and become an ardent supporter jobs now, output now (to pay for what the jobs will cause to be purchased), govt responsibility (not size) now, a brains trust now, honest debate on how govt spending CAN accomplish NOW what it did in WW II, etc.
Obama must offer LOWER taxes in return for LOWER interest. Lower interest and managed reorganization of debt (as necessary) can bring capitalism up to date. He must promise a long term effort to maximize BOTH freedom of enterprise and freedom of thought -- to invent (as Bill Gates says) a better toilet -- and as Keynes said, invent better ways to always have the jobs we need and the economic output to pay the highest wages possible.

Correction -- add an IS and an A.
Too bad the Singularity is not here yet. It would have had an AI program correct all my stupid errors.
Soon the Singularity (a theory that machine intelligence will equal our own) will correct all non-Keynesian thought with the fact that a monetary system of production needs money to work. NOT TOO MUCH MONEY. NOT TOO LITTLE MONEY. It must have a Goldilocks portion of gov't legal tender deposited on time to the right account for the right purpose.
===== applying the not yet arrived Singularity:===
If he IS defeated for timidity in the face of economic defects that anyone can plainly see, he may undo the good my vote for him in 2007 tried to accomplish. I thought I was voting for A brain -- not a brain-washed member of the Univ. of Chicago's school of small vision for a world in peril.
JohnGelles 07/23/2011 03:41 PM Report
Paul Mann writes well and to the point. I agree with his radical thought:
..... "...it's as if Obama selected him to do his bidding to further USA's decline both economically and politically around the globe."
Of course, this radical indictment begins with IT'S AS IF.
We could indict a certain idiot, RON PAUL, whose doveish-ness passes for aged eccentricity, for even more indecent-ness in his desire to be president (God Forbid).
But our current bi-racial President ought to have mobilized our economy to rescue the whole economy NOT just Wall Street operations (and even these he rescued with too little thought to how he expected to save middle class economic security and American National Security with so little money as they were sent reeling by US and global economic contraction that Keynes explained can be ended with government spending and liquidity created on purpose.
Why mention bi-racial? Because he has failed both races which we voters sought to unite -- behind America's recent moves to respect the human rights of the whole human race.
If he defeated for timidity in the face of economic defects that anyone can plainly see, he may undo the good my vote for him in 2007 tried to accomplish. I thought I was voting for brain -- not a brain-washed member of the Univ. of Chicago's school of small vision for a world in peril.
Using the private sector to speed our next ventures into space -- backed by billion dollar government contracts -- may be a good idea. It implies we should be writing gov't contracts to seed clean home sourced energy, education, health clinics everywhere in our nation, housing for every American veteran or poor person (with none put out in the street or compelled to sleep under bridges), food for every stomach, mental care for all the sick, etc.
Obama is far to the right of Nixon -- even to the right of Reagan. What is his problem. Is it Austan Dean Goolsbee (born August 18, 1969), an American economist, who was his buddy at Chicago where they each taught the opposite of functional finance and functional law.

Donilon is certainly part of the huge problem facing the credibility of the USA. He believes in nonsense - as if the more we humble ourselves to the world, the more we will be respected. He's learned nothing from history, and it's as if Obama selected him to do his bidding to further USA's decline both economically and politically around the globe.
Countries, as people, respect strength, militarily and economically. We are losing both.
I also did not catch the name of the book Christopher gave him --- "that changed his life".
He said nothing new last night and wasted an hour of my time hoping to hear a tidbit of some sort of intelligence. I heard nothing!
JohnGelles 07/23/2011 07:40 AM Report
While I was slightly off the subject of National Security -- although what I wrote on Krugman vs Brooks IS National Security WRIT LARGE -- as a fundamental problem in the economics of PRODUCTION and MONEY, my computer screen flashed a Bill Gates move I have long thought necessary:
The Gates foundation is offering millions to universities to RE-INVENT THE TOILET to reduce the cost to prevent the contagious diseases spread by poor sanitation in undeveloped nations. They are looking for the "cell phone" version of the toilet: no hole in the ground, no flush, no sewer. Just turn personal waste into electricity or safe and proper fertilizer. And do it so cheaply those diseases will be gone before in record time.

Above is link to comment on tonight's show (22-23 July). Tonight the debt limit, jobs, and future economic power of the USA is being discussed by Paul Krugman and David Brooks. Unfortunately its page will take days to be posted.
As to Tom Donlon he spoke well for a security expert who puts great faith in diplomacy and less faith in force as the right tool to assure security. Henry Kissinger was the star who had that job under Nixon. It ought to be held by hawk. Donlon appears to be half-dove. He may work out. I wonder if he favored the chance Obama took in sending in the Navy Seals to meet our security needs.

I never heard of this guy before. He seems quite intelligent. I'm glad President Obama has an adviser smarter and less flaky than Joe Biden; reassuring, indeed.
Politicians are all puppets; you can be sure there's somebody (intelligent or Evil) behind them pulling their strings. Most of those puppet-pushers are trying to protect and advance their UNFAIR advantage(s) at the expense of the majority (the shrinking middle-class, Soon to be poor) with not a care to the real welfare of the country as a whole; as is recently evident in the 'debt ceiling' 'Drama'.
If the worst happens, you can be sure, the rich people living up on the hill are responsible.

Mr Rose can not be faulted for interviewing a NS advisor. However what we got is a 2012 Campaign Advertisement for the Obama campaign. One was struck by the continued use of certain buzz words such as "relationship" which are designed to make us feel how lucky we are to have such a stellar luminary as Obama is, for our President. One thinks that when Mr Donilon smiles at one, one had better watch ones back. A disarmingly charming snake.

On the show, Mr Donilon said Europe is US's biggest economic relationship. Wrong. It's actually Canada. The US and Canada are each other's biggest trading partners, there are extensive business overlaps, the manufacturing sectors are closely integrated and Canada is US's chief energy supplier to boot. It is a common error for Americans to make but it is somewhat surprising and frankly alarming to hear from Obama's main foreign policy advisor.

There's a lot of countries ppl like living in better than the US. All the Scandinavian ones, I'd say, probably the rest of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, many of which also have an higher standard of living and better social benefits, and for some ppl, no doubt even some less developed ones. I doubt the Chinese would trade places with us either. The issue is the effect "Keynesianism" has had on the republican ideals with which the country was founded. The only ppl clamoring to get in here are those motivated by their cupidity or forced to by ours. Regardless of history, in the end foreign policy, just as defense policy, is of far less importance than economic policy.
Donilon has, in addition, not led a life of national service, but long been a cog in Washington's political revolving door, as a lobbyist, campaign staffer and PR man. He has little foreign policy experience, and military, none. If Dean Acheson's example changed his life, it didn't very much and WhoRunsGov mentions a quite different influence: "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" by Hunter S. Thompson, which led him to go to college in DC, taking a path similar to many others. He became a Carter White house intern. "According to The Washington Post's Jason Horowitz, Hamilton Jordan, Carter's then-chief of staff, called the White House when Donilon was a 23-year-old intern looking for dirt on which Cabinet officials had refused to campaign with the president in his troubled 1980 reelection effort. Donilon not only dug up the research, but personally delivered it to Camp David. Carter fired all of his cabinet secretaries a week later." Donilon also worked on Mondale's, Dukakis's, and both of Biden's presidential campaigns, and he is close to the last also through family. His only prior govt position was as an aide to Warren Christopher. Obviously a law degree was not necessary for this, but an aid for the other. In the Obama admin he had previously held a similar position under James Jones. His narrative struck me about the same way as those of the Wall St banksters'.
Syria is in exactly the same position as Iraq was and the only transition would be from Shiite to Sunni dominance. The civil war now getting under way would undoubtedly continue and might well draw in other countries. Assuming any other outcome is fanciful. As is his justification of the Libyan escapade, for which any UN sanction has been flouted, and his idea of the whole Middle East business. The opposite situation obtains in Bahrain, where Sunnis rule a majority of Shiites. There is no solution to these short of war, or divine intervention, and Obama is not God, nor Mr Donilon, I'd say, St Peter.
There is only one thing the US need do to promote peace in Palestine: stop giving Israel billions of dollars of arms every year. We can't afford it anyway, and it surely is not cost-effective.
