I know that Americans are so fed up with all the "Political Correctness" that we are spoon fed in this country, I dont think we are going to allow Islam to dictate any views that we have, well not until we see a lot more educated successful Muslim people stand up and denounce radical Islam. I think anyone who researches this topic knows what the Qur'an says and they also know that there is a reason why there aren't that many Muslims standing up. It is amazing how so little said can say so much and be so loud.2+2=4 I hope I am an idiot but I fell that I know I am not.

Charlie Rose should also focus on getting views from Indian Muslims too. India contains the second largest muslim community of about 200 million muslims. They have had a consistent democratic experience and have some of the oldest Islamic heritage in the world.
The school of Deoband is only second in Islamic learning in the world to Al Azhar in Egypt.
An understanding of Islam will be incomplete without taking into account the large and important group of Indian Muslims.

The 300,000-person Iranian Baha'i community has endured intensified persecution and murder since the shah of Iran was toppled in 1979.
The persecution of Baha'is by Iran's fanatical Muslims is compounded by the Baha'i pacifist reaction to their being murdered by their Islamic regime. I hope this series on what Islam is includes the story of the Baha'i.
There is nothing more disgusting than America's silence in this tragic situation. Murder has been its hallmark. But, because it is not genocide, it gets our silent treatment.
There ought to be an ultimatum to Iran to protect and free all their Baha'is or suffer war at the hands of civilized nations in the East and West.

The case against the Islamism that animated the attacks against America and all its faiths on 9-11 by Islamist fascists is accurately, ably, and properly presented in the comments by the several commentators immediately below. It is necessary that they do this to protect the individual Muslims Winston Churchill allows are worthy of an Islamic Reformation rather than all out war.
But all out war is also necessary to prevent a clash of Civilizations at a date much later than now.
I believe the series Charlie has started needs another day or two of Islamic effort to bring reform to these people in Europe before they are seduced by their own clerics to multiply but not assimilate -- to become a menace that will be exiled if they are fortunate and defeated badly if they do not assimilate.
Charlie is NOT on the left AND anti-American. He is opening up minds, we hope, among Muslims in Europe where assimilation is not happening fast enough.
If America were to slows its rate of assimilation and mimic parts of Europe where political Jihad proceeds via birth rates and treason, it would be a different story.
Obama is a Christian. He deserves the respect all Presidents, himself included, have earned. If we elect an assimilated Muslim, black or white, he too will receive the earned respect of the American people who live by their historical principles that create human rights not war against them.
The testing period now in Egypt and North Africa will speed the necessary Reformation of their religion and reversal of their politics or it will not. The wars continue -- and America will win them if human political rights last and economic rights are to stand a chance.
In my view, what Charlie Rose is doing thus far, will help us win these wars. He nightly proves his love for America and its people. If he does NOT convert Islamic haters of America to a wholly opposite set of beliefs, his series will have failed the only purpose open to it.
The idea that all religion is all bad is NOT a good one. There is a lot good in every religion and there is a lot of religion doing good on planet earth. At a distant future time religion and literature, now first cousins may become brothers and sisters. Religion and politics may be kept very far apart. But clerics can vote and politicians can pray. They always have.
Martial Jihad and Muslim conquest are dead if civilization is to be our fate. Let us in the audience follow Jefferson and Churchill. They knew whereof they spoke. Some voices in America and England speak in an opposite direction. Charlie Rose is not one of them. Nor can this series be if it is to waver in its dedication to our values and our purpose.

As a member of neither Christianity or Islam where would I rather live? A Christian nation! Muslims protest head scarves in France and discrimination in the US while any display, text, or icon of another religion is a serious crime in Saudi Arabia even leading to execution. Muslims protest the occupation of Palestine yet when a minority religion such as Bahá'í is banned, persecuted and exiled in Iran and Egypt you hear an amazing silence.
Western muslims angrily protest discrimination in the west yet NEVER protest far more serious abuse, persecution and institutionalized oppression in their own countries. Solomon Rushdie had a fatwa placed on him. I didn't hear anything about Osama Bin Laudin's fatwa? A stupid cartoon in Europe produced killing and protest. When a two thousand year old Buddist statue in Afghanistan was destroyed by government decree I don't remember any Muslim protest. When western Muslims protest to protect the rights of any minority religion in the Muslim world I will start listening.
I would personally like to thank all of the Western Christian world for giving me the freedom to disagree.

EPat - you make a good case. But if the answer for mankind is to be found in religion, ANY RELIGION, than times are indeed bleak. Christians can be (and are) equally bloody, a la our last 3 (or 4) preemptive wars. Plus the crusaders that had their own preemption.
Religions are all a deflection from a solution. Praying (once or five-a-day) is time NOT spent thinking, but time soliciting a spoon-fed gratuity of sorts (from God or Allah, or Buddha(?)) instead of mutual goals common to all mankind.
Christians would have world-wide inquisitions within 50 yrs should they become the dominant religion.
Religions propel our species to god-awful depths while espousing the opposite (making them the more insidious). [Pedophilia amongst clergy! Just one current ex.]

"Islam is all about salaam. "Salaam" is the Arabic work for peace. And everything I’m doing, striving with my own self, my own ego, to get that inner peace is a jihad. So the jihad is the exactly the opposite of what I’m saying. It’s not the way towards war. It’s the way toward peace."
Is this "Salaam?
It is incomprehensible that our liberal politicians continue to bow before and support a "religious" cause that can work its followers into violent anti-American rage with threats of death and destruction to Americans everywhere over the burning of a book, the presence of a painting or a cartoon but not only condones but supports suicide bombers, the stoning to death of one of its followers, the subjection of non-believers and women and Saudi Arabia's banning of the Christian Bible, Jewish torahs and religious houses of worship.
Isn't there something wrong with demanding tolerance for those who show no tolerance for others?
Obviously Tariq Ramadan needs to refresh himself on the history of Islam and to the writings on Islam by noted observers and academics. One could start by reviewing the words of Winston Churchill on Islam from The River War (1899), his account of the Sudanese campaign. Winston Churchill was a man whose prescient warnings about Hitler were ignored by the world.
Here is the full text"
"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful
fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities - but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome."
It wasn't only Churchill who observed and understood the true nature of Islam but also Thomas Jefferson.
Sorry folks, but there were no Muslims on the Mayflower as is inferred at every opportunity by the President and also on this program. Thomas Jefferson did possess a copy of the Koran which Keith Allison, our first Muslim Congressman, used to make his oath of office. But what was Jefferson opinion of Islam? Did he believe the Muslim religion represented a calming influence in world affairs? Far from it. In 1786 Thomas Jefferson, then US ambassador to France, and John Adams, then US Ambassador to Britain, met in London with Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, the Dey’s ambassador to Britain, in an attempt to negotiate a peace treaty with the Barbary Pirates based on Congress’ vote of funding. To the US Congress these two future Presidents later reported the reasons for the Muslims’ hostility towards America, a nation with which they had no previous contacts.
“...that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman (Muslim) who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.”
Jefferson had it right. The Marines were sent to Tripoli to put and end to Muslim piracy.
And then there is Harvard political scientist Samuel Huntington whose book "Clash of Civilizations," described in detail the clash between Islam and the West, that "Islams Borders are bloody and so are its innards"
Today's experts, including Mr.Ramadan ignore the historical past violent record of Islamic conquests.
Mohammed is recorded as dying, on or about, 632 AD. And what followed was not an "under seige" mentality. Wars for enrichment followed.
Islam had its own agenda long before the Crusades. If peaceful -- what were Muslim armies doing in Europe 300 years before the Crusades? And hundred of years thereafter?
Seventy-seven years after Mohammed's death, in 711 AD -- some 300 years prior to the first Crusade -- it was Muslim military forces who crossed the Straits of Gibraltar from North Africa into Spain and in less than a decade crossed the Pyrenees.
In 732 AD , the Muslim forces under the command of Abd-er- rahman, were decisively defeated by Charles Martel and the Franks at the Battle of Poitiers [Tours].
Nine hundred years later, in September 1683 AD -- Ottoman Empire Muslim armies led by the Turkish commander Grand Vizier Kara Mustapha were at the gates of Vienna.
They were defeated by a combination of Austrian, German, and Polish armies.
If peace was Mohammed's message -- a subtle proposition at best -- his adherents missed the point then and miss it now.
Second the world needs to understand that Islam was not spread by sandal shod mendicant mullahs preaching from the Koran but by mounted scimitar wielding jihadists as described in "Dhimmitude for Dummies" By Victor Sharpe in which the following is found:
"But what of the peoples and nations that fell under Islamic occupation? For them the story was one of forced conversions to Islam, slavery, death and the Islamic institution of dhimmitude .
This is the word that describes the parlous state of those who refused to convert to Islam and became the subjugated, non-Muslims who were forced to accept a restrictive and humiliating subordination to a superior Islamic power and live as second class citizens in order to avoid enslavement or death. These peoples and populations were known as dhimmis , and if such a status was not humiliating enough, a special tax or tribute, called the jizya , was imposed upon them and upon all dhimmis .
Dhimmitude is the direct outcome of jihad, which is the military conquest of non-Islamic territory mandated by Allah as a spiritual obligation for every individual Moslem and Moslem nation.
From its beginnings in the seventh century, Islam spread through violent conquest of non-Moslem lands. In the eighth century, a formal set of rules to govern relationships between Moslems and non-Moslems was created based upon Moslem conquests of non-Moslem peoples. These rules were based upon jihad , which established how the Moslems would treat the conquered non-Moslems in terms of their submission to Islam.
Jihad can be pursued through force or other means such as propaganda, writing, or subversion against the perceived enemy. The so-called enemies are those who oppose the establishment of Islamic law or its spread, mission, or sovereignty over them and their land.
Propaganda and subversion are the very means now being employed against the West and Judeo-Christian civilization, and Islamists have shown themselves to be brilliantly adept at manipulating the gullible and uninformed western media in pursuit of their aims of world domination."

It will also improve our understanding of the brain as the source of language thought. A huge agenda. Good luck to all who put it together and to those in the audience too.
A series on Islamic politics, diplomacy, war and adaptation to today and tomorrow. Not a study or discipline to be attempted casually. The modern crusades are underway, as well as the reformation of the associated religion. Good luck to all the targets of Islamic enemies of the West. And bad luck to Islamic murderers of their own co-coreligionists who are at peace with the world. The Arab Spring will tell the story of a major segment of the Islamic future.
A series on employment, money, credit, profit, interest taxes, banking, accounting and development in the global economy is not yet planned by Charlie Rose. It might help millions of Americans for whom Charlie works earn a living. It is the series we need ahead of the others. After it succeeds in its mission, the others might make more sense.

How difficult is it for supposedly intelligent experts in their field to fail to understand that the American people who have accepted Muslims for years are finally being exposed to the true nature of Islam a total command and control governmental operation with religious overtones.
An organization whose mullahs and imams have failed to condemn or speak out against terrorists, those who slaughter innocent Muslim and non-Muslims, those who behead captives live on TV , fly planes into office buildings all in the name of Allah. No condemnation of mullahs who issue fatwas, an Islamic license to kill, on anyone for any perceived slight of Islam, the Prophet or whatever reason he thinks justifies a death sentence. In the real world, issuing an order to or soliciting for someone to kill another person is a criminal offense and subject to arrest and trial but political correctness allows Muslim clerics to order killings without fear of punishment and the Western world cringes at the idea that a fatwa or a threat might be issued for an author, professors, comedy show writers, publishers, movie director, actor, historian, museum or even a University, the Metropolitan Museum and Yale are the most recent examples along with Comedy Central that have and so practiced self-censorship and political correctness under or to avoid threat or actual attacks from Muslims. Major US newspapers, magazines and other MSM outlets capitulated years ago when they refused to publish the Danish cartoons.
Until the first arrest order is issued for a mullah who declares a fatwa against anyone for any reason, the rest of the world is under the control of radical Islam.
Where are the "moderate Muslims against sharia" marches and protest groups, the "Muslims against fatwas" protest groups, the 'Muslims against suicide bombers protest groups, the "Muslims against car bombs in Times Square, public markets, assemblies of job seekers and other crowded places" protest groups.
Where is the moderate Muslim outrage, the condemnation, or even issuing fatwas by peaceful Muslim mullahs against the "the terrorists today" who take hundreds if not thousands of lives of other Muslims, Jews, Christians and other innocents with suicide bombers and attacks by heavily armed terrorists. Why ignore or hide the truth? Is there a conspiracy of silence? Or fear that some radical mullah will issue a fatwa against any Muslim who objects to violence against both believers in Islam, but not followers of the right sect, or nonbelievers.
It is up to the peaceful moderate Muslims to stop the carnage carried out in the name of their god. The learned professors seem to believe that education is the key to combat radical Islam yet the founders of the Muslim Brotherhood, the root of Al Queda, were educated men, Osama bin Laden and his chief lieutenants were and are educated men, the leaders, planners and those carrying out the 9/11 attack were educated men and all reverted to the practice of violence, terrorism and suicide bombings based on the writings of Mohammad. There was no mention of the writings of Sayyid Qutb, another educated man as described in:
The Thought of Sayyid Qutb: Radical Islam's Philosophical Foundations
Statesmanship Thesis
Recipient of the 2004 Charles E. Parton Award
by Luke Loboda
Sayyid Qutb: The Man, His Life, and His Significance
http://www.ashbrook.org/publicat/thesis/loboda/home.html
One only has to read the final paragraph of the Introduction to understand that education is not the answer to radical Islam;
"However, unless the West has a deeper understanding of the ideas which bring about support for terrorist activity, those ideas will continue to resonate within the hearts of certain Muslims and continue to perpetuate violence. Unless the West can respond to the philosophical arguments of men like Sayyid Qutb, its victory over groups like al-Qaeda can never be total and final. Therefore, this thesis is written to be a fair and concise presentation of the thought of Sayyid Qutb as it is relevant to today’s political world. It is up to the people of the West and their leaders to fire back the next philosophical shot."

Well said Shalom. It may not be an apologias, but it will try to convey that Moslems are mostly a rational lot, inventors of algebra and chemistry etc.
Religions by nature are intolerant of other belief systems (than their own); which makes one question what singling out any one of them in a study or series has for a goal? As an atheist I find Catholicism (pedophilia w/o excommunication) more repugnant than Islam. Will it ever advance to a CR series? I doubt it.
In short is this a "see how broad minded we are"? Not for me as I'm closed to all such clap-trap. But the overall take-away of the series will be interesting. Its objectivity in particular.
ShalomFreedman 07/03/2011 03:22 PM Report
This was an extremely superficial program consisting in too many too brief interviews with too many people. This did allow the viewer to see that not all Muslims look like Sinbad the Sailor. I suppose there is some value in that. It also allowed people to understand that Muslims are capable of disagreeing with each other without murdering each other. There is I suppose also some value in that. There was for me value in learning that in Indonesia and Malay culture generally -about which I know next to nothing -there is not the kind of rampant division between the sexes and discrimination against women there is in Saudi Arabia. There was also a major effort to discredit what is taken to be the standard position, a straw- man position I believe in regard to critics of Islam i.e. They see all Muslims as terrorist enemies. It seems to me that such a claim is an easy way out for the critics of the critics. In fact criticisms of Islam are far more complex and relate to a much broader variety of issues than Terrorism. Take for instance the whole issue of the Islamic failure to participate in and contribute to modern scientific and medical research. The complex history of such a subject will not I suspect be in any way really treated in this series.
Mostly Charlie Rose gathered a group of 'apologists for Islam' whose major claim seemed to be that believers in Islam are 'just normal people like everybody else'. This, whatever it means exactly, may well be true. But this does not cancel out the role of a powerful and dominant very large minority whose hostility to the West sets the tone certainly throughout the Middle East, if not to the same degree in the Islamic world as as a whole.
I would also point out that there were a quite few errors and mistaken claims made by various interviewees which Charlie Rose either let slip by or agreed with. Perhaps the most egregious was Marion Cooke of Duke who when asked what her greatest hope was said it was that she wished that Islam would just 'return to being a religion' and not be involved in politics. Charlie Rose happily seconded the motion. But the fact is that Islam does not see any separation of State and Church. In its Civilization the two go together. One cannot lead to a better understanding of a subject if one does not know its basics.
REMant 07/03/2011 10:48 AM Report
WHAT pray tell is "just a religion?" Perhaps it was not the intention of the remark, but I think it is extremely wishful thinking to equate sectarian diversity with cultural diversity and that with democratic "diversity," as it would be in this country, tho I can certainly believe there are a lot of liberal American academics who would like to reduce religion to the status of a "brand" like Coca-Cola. Too bad they don't feel the same way about marriage, abortion and stuff like that. This BTW is all I gleaned from this - nothing about Islam - except to remind me of how tendentious and deficient in reflection and expression most academics are.

ALL religions are based on surrealism, puerile fatuousness and generally arrested development below the 3rd grade elementary school level. A child-like (wish) belief that a FATHER-FIGURE is looking favorably upon them both now and in an imagined afterlife. Islam and Christianity big time.
Islam is prob. the best most psychologically designed religion extant. Praying (or anything) five times a day has to be very reinforcing. The commitment of total prostration another psychic reinforcer. Consequently, in the long battle of (little) minds Islam will ultimately prevail. (Judeo-Christians take heed!)
Will the world be better off under a unified Islam? Well of course not.
Will the world evolve to realizing its fate is in its on hands and start depending upon its own cognition to preserve its own? Well of course not.
