I thought "Moonrise Kingdom" was magical. But, how'd we get to where we're held captive in movie theaters to a seemingly endless barrage of advertising of the television sort? I've read that profits aren't shared with theater venues so they resort to selling popcorn and soda at 10X what it costs at the grocery store and having to advertise.

What a cheap thing to do to theater goers.

charlie, charlie, charlie: Let's say you have a film called

"Bridesmaids" and two male guests and one female critic.

Would you expect to hear the female critic's voice on this one? I would. I don't have the patience to go back and count

the time you allotted the young lady from SLATE--my sense is

that the 3 of you macho male critics dominated to the tune of not allowing her even a full minute's worth. I don't need to see clips--we have our eye and ear on the clock on the screen to the second--the second is a long time. Plus,

we've likely seen the films already. The bloke below re.

Denby is the type of bloke who should be surfing bloggers--Denby's too candidly erudite for him; Denby was trenchant on Tree of Life. Scott to weak, too afraid to start off telling us what he felt about Allen's movie (much like his printed review where he wastes my time with historical context--Allen sucked him in--read Denby then steal Denby next time might help you.) Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, I wouldn't be writing this if I hadn't just watched Sugar Ray Leonard listen to your question with eyes wide open: "So tell me, what is the future of boxing?" --a great question. really. now go back and listen to Leonard's response. All the best; your show is terrific--bring it on the road to the Bay Area and contact me when you do; I'd be glad to set you up with some guests.

I always enjoy the movie discussions on here, they should be longer or more focused, with more critics too. Charlie Rose could acquire them in different sessions...

Denby is a burned out old man. He is totally oblivious to the possibility that film can be a meditative experience. His inability to flow with the experience of meditation in Tree of Life causes his bizarre reaction. Carefully listening to his words suggests he actually is filled with "puke" and should be first on the list of the next hecatomb performed in Central Park("slit my throat"). We all await the announcement in Goings On About Town!
