Yes, Brian Williams was professional and an excellent substitute for Charlie Rose. Hurry back Charlie!

I missed you Charlie but Brian Williams was a super sub. He prompted smart questions, stepped out of the way and allowed the glorious Doris Kearns Goodwin to wax brilliant and Ghosh and Gopnik to do their thing.

I am SO IMPRESSED with Brian Williams, Richard Engel, and the whole NBC Sensationalism Machine; reminding us who Really controls 'the news', AND apparently, PBS, and, even maybe Charlie Rose. ...

I think it is a possible turning point and that perhaps the admin will use it to reduce both the long shadow of America cast abroad, and the rabble-rousing and breast-beating here. The whole thing as been one of the greatest and most naive boondoggles in American history.

Whatever its fate, al-Qaeda made its point and I don't think it has been lost on Arab youth, anymore than this war-mongering has been lost on the young of this country. Despite what you may think, polls show youth have always been the most hawkish part of society. To improve our standing in the world and prevent wholesale religious conflict, we desperately need to reverse this madness, made all the worse by the economic fallout. It does the country no more good to have kids growing up wanting to be soldiers than to be financiers. We must maintain a balance of power, yes, but it is not possible to establish peace and cooperation thru violence and police, anymore than it is to abuse your children.

I think, contrary to Engel's view, intervention in Libya was made credible by Afghanistan and Iraq. I doubt it would have happened at all without that as a prelude, and, of course, nor would the uprisings, themselves, which were prompted by our post 9-11 monetary policies and a decade of war spending. Even so I would not be surprised to find the CIA there from the beginning.
