A sobering assessment from Mr Malley. This is another situation where the "bad" guy may actually be the "good" guy, not only for internal reasons, but also since the Sunni majority may be more hostile to Israel and the US. A poll this week, buried, of course, in the Wash Post, found Egyptians like neither, nor Obama. Is the Syrian situation, "democratic?" No. But do we have any leverage over it? Probably not. Does it make any sense to try to link this to Iran? Surely it can't. Would it make any more sense to invade Syria than it did Iraq? Absolutely not. Is there a possibility of a wider Sunni-Shiite conflict if things get worse rather than better? I would think so.
